An old-fashioned game in a shiny new package, The Bard's Tale 4: Barrows Deep is a worthy addition to a classic series.

The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep delivers on the faith its Kickstarter backers put into the project. It weaves combat, exploration, music, and puzzles into a game that stands out in a crowded market. It's unlike any other RPG, and with other old-school RPGs finding success these days — Pillars of Eternity, Octopath Traveler, and Dragon Quest XI — I hope InXile is able to come back to this fantastical world, just like it's doing with Wasteland.

At its roughest edges, The Bard’s Tale IV shows its retro revival roots in some not so positive ways. It may not be special enough for me to easily overlook these technical shortcomings entirely, but it’s an RPG that’s brimming with enjoyable, challenging fights, elaborate and entertaining puzzles, and plenty of visual and musical flair. And that was more than enough to keep me humming along contentedly to its tune more often than not.

The Bard’s Tale IV is a modern take on a classic formula. How much the player will get from the game will entirely depend on how much they can appreciate certain old-school mechanics and design decisions. There are technical problems with the game, but these are something that can be fixed. However, it is difficult to say right now how the game will run on any given PC, so that is currently something the player has to take into account. For those waiting 30 years, the wait is over and the result is flawed, but ultimately enjoyable. For those too young to remember the original games, consider The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep to be an education in the old school, with a modern flavour.

So, it's a mixed bag, though true to its name, very deep. It'll last a long while too, well over 50 hours if you want to have a go at everything. You'll just have to look past a lot of rough edges.

The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep has a satisfyingly deep and flexible battle system, surrounded by heavy puzzle exploration and a narrative that doesn't manage to stay interesting. There are some really neat systems at play here for those looking for intricate combat, but performance issues and a lacking storyline make it a hard sell to a larger audience.

The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep is a frustrating mix of brilliance and bad design. Future updates may elevate it to something more but right now it, sadly, suffers from some broken strings.

Unfortunately, every good idea Barrows Deep has is overshadowed by an extreme number of bugs, performance issues, and other technical problems. For example, every time the game is launched, it starts on the wrong screen, in the wrong resolution, and in German. From there, loading takes multiple minutes, textures pop in when they feel like it, everything stutters incessantly, and something as simple as opening the inventory causes the game to lock up for at least a second. These glaringly rough edges mar what might otherwise have been an immersive fantasy experience.

The Bard's Tale IV is an absolute mess. The framerate is all over the place, and bugs are constantly rearing their ugly head to impede or altogether halt progress. Sure, I'd love to save the world from the biggest baddie who has come from somewhere to ruin everything, but you're kidding yourself if you think it's worth slogging through the muck and the mire of The Bard's Tale IV to do so.

Common wisdom and clichés aside, The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep proves you can go home again. But why would anyone want to? While the game re-creates what we played in the 1990s, misty water-colored memories of hours spent with Eye of the Beholder are not enough to fix numerous design miscues, performance problems, and bugs. This is a tough sell to all but the most dedicated and patient retro fan.

The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep hides a few good moments inside a mess of a game. It feels dated not for its old-school inspirations, but for its execution of those ideas. The world and story lack flavor, despite having a couple of memorable and funny characters. If the combat didn't move forward in odd performance hiccups, it would be enjoyable in itself. For die-hard fans of dungeon crawlers and puzzles, I'd say this is only barely worth a try. I think how InXile is resuscitating old-school games is great, but unfortunately, The Bard's Tale IV is a huge swing and a miss for me. For what it's worth, at least they swung.
Oct 1st, 2018 · Windows · read reviewFor me, despite a genuinely good combat system, and the moments of respite found on occasions in the dungeons, I've had a predominantly dull time with The Bard's Tale IV. It's a very dull game in most respects.
