Un excellent jeu de plate-formes.

While not quite a masterpiece, Kabuki Quantum Fighter presents a unique spin on a genre that was, even in 1990, already becoming tiresome. Plus it’s called Kabuki Quantum Fighter.

Kabuki's quite a novel game. Well, have you ever seen a game where the main character dispatches his foes by lashing out at them with his massive hair-do? I think not. The action itself is incredibly similar to Shadow Warrior (which we reviewed last month), what with all of the different athletic moves Shadow Warrior - the interaction with the backdrops is a little easier. The game's quite challenging, but not frustrating enough to put you off for long. Both graphics and sound match the brill playability, so check it out as soon as you see it.

Like Paul, I wasn't too keen on this to start with. The smart graphics and the animation on Mr Wig made it look nice, but it was just soooo difficult! A bit of perseverance taught me the error of my ways though, and after a half-hour's play I was hooked. The programmers obviously know their stuff, but I'm a little concerned about whoever came up with the plot. As if being beamed into a computer gone haywire wasn't bad enough, the Colonel is also transformed into a traditional Japanese actor, just because his Granddad was one?! Still, it doesn't stop this from being a topper game, which should give real Nintendo hards a run for their money.

There is no denying that Kabuki Quantum Fighter is a bit derivative however its gameplay is strong enough that it doesn’t matter. This is a very strong platformer with a perfect difficulty curve and serves as a nice alternative to the usual greats. Ignore the silly title and a great platformer awaits.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Kabuki: Quantum Fighter. It was a game I initially played because the title intrigued me. As a kid, I had a lot of fun with it. Years later, it remains a high-quality action title for the NES, although the skills I’ve honed over time have made me realize how tiny this game is. Six areas fly by, with only the high challenge offered by the platforming and boss battles keeping the adventure from ending in less than a half-hour. Kabuki: Quantum Fighter doesn’t quite stand toe to toe with the many games it borrows from, but it’s still well worth checking out.

Kabuki Quantum Fighter is a legit alternative to Ninja Gaiden and while it does draw heavy inspiration from Tecmo's classic series it has a few of its own ideas that blend in seamlessly with its high-octane gameplay. In particular, its unique power-ups and flowing level design are key features that push this into the upper echelon of NES titles.

Nintendo Power Magazine (3.7 out of 5)

In this new action program from Hal, the Kabuki hero must battle his way to the computer's core and destroy the invaders, using his bare hair. Yes, you read correctly --- the Kabuki hero's hair, a weapon like no other in video games, is only the beginning of the bizarre things you'll find in Quantum Fighter!

Graphically, the grimy cyber world is nailed perfectly, and the soundtrack is excellent and matches the theme just as well. While the gameplay is good, the unique main character and genuinely weird setting definitely make this a fun game to experience.

Random Access (6 out of 10)

Kabuki Quantum Fighter is a decent platformer, but elements of its design do cause it to be a rather daunting experience and not one you'll likely be playing over and over once you've given it an honest try. I did enjoy how the storyline tried to be a little different, and the game certainly has its own style. But the game's high difficulty and attack style may prove a bit taxing for those who don't feel like sitting and practicing for 20 hours a day. Not bad, but not great.

Retrogaming History (6 out of 10)

Operation Rainfall ( )

So, is Kabuki Quantum Fighter a bad game? Well, no, I guess it isn’t. The best way I could explain Kabuki’s overall quality is that it’s aged very poorly. In the 90s, it was really cool to see a game like this on your television screen and it just made sense. Now, however, the game is boring, short, uneventful, and will test your patience with no payoff. Kabuki Quantum Fighter is like watching a Schwarzenegger film in the 90s compared to now. (Not a good Schwarzenegger movie — one of the poopy ones.) So, with that final thought, I give Kabuki Quantum Fighter 2.5 stars. A game with great animation and music, but with boring and frustrating gameplay. Now excuse me, it’s time for Klax.
