The Video Game Critic (A-) (91%)

The crisp visuals feature large characters with oversized heads, but the main hero is a dead ringer for Jackie Chan! The backgrounds are colorful but somewhat sparse and could really use a little animation. Your attacks include punches, jump-kicks and fireballs, but icons will bestow you with one additional special move. There are some amazing bosses and several enjoyable Street Fighter 2-style bonus stages as well. Even the audio is exceptional. Jackie's attacks are punctuated with digitized yells, and the rhymic, high-energy music reminded me of something out of a Sonic game. Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu is a lengthy journey but there's no password, just several continues. Fortunately, the game's so much fun that you probably won't mind restarting it from the beginning. There's no official score, but the number of "orbs" you collect kind of serves than function. Although somewhat rare, this is one quality title I would not hesitate to recommend.

Jackie handles it all with his trademark humor and penchant for snapping necks. Perhaps the game’s one true flaw is its difficulty, as you could easily finish it in an afternoon. Still, an afternoon with Jackie Chan is one well spent or so I’ve been told.

Graphically, this is something of a masterpiece on the NES. The cartoon sprites are surprisingly large and very funny. Sound consists of smacking noises accompanied by a fabulous jangling oriental tune. This is very similar indeed to the PC Engine version and that is a definite compliment. Jackie Chan won't win any prizes for originality, but if you like bouncing around a land filled with Kung Fu critters, this is the game for you. One of the best NES games for ages and essential for Jackie Chan fans.

The game moves along at a perfect clip, and builds to an intense last level and final confrontation. The only drawback is that it all has to end so soon. But while a few more levels would have been more than welcome, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu does all that you could ask of a 2D platformer: the scenes are engaging, the music stays with you, the difficulty curve is ideal. Just don’t let the name fool you into anticipating any of Jackie’s movie moments -- you’ll be disappointed. Put the license aside, as I did, and simply expect to be thoroughly engaged by a top quality platformer. In the end, you will find your expectations met, your pulse pounding, and your mouth bent into a crooked smile.

I thought that this would be a brill game. I was a tad disappointed. Poor old Jackie seems to have gone through a timewarp to ancient Japan (no leaping on top of a moving lorry and taking on seven ninjitsu aces in mid-air, no sir) - completely losing all of the atmosphere of the movies! Still, although the game wastes the potential of the licence, it's still a good laugh to play with some really nice sprites (especially the tiger on level one) and decent grunts, groans and tunes beefing up the audio aspect. The game Is also very challenging and there's plenty of variety in all the levels. If you're into platform-based beat 'em ups, give this one a go.

Weiter so, Hudson Soft!

While the graphics are mostly fantastic, some areas can become confusing when ïŹ‚atness and color choice make determining foreground and background difficult. The loveable Jackie Chan makes a great hero for a very fun game.

Jackal is a fantastic game and a total blast. It is an absolute crime that it doesn’t get the props it deserves as one of the best action games on the system. Hudson Soft took what could have been a lame licensed title and crafted video game gold. There is no excuse not to buy it at the rock bottom price it goes for.

What more needs to be said? Criminally underrated and often overlooked Jackie Chan’s Action Kung-Fu is a blast and should be purchased by any fan of action and platforming games. Don’t let the stylized anime look dissuade you and miss out on one of the NES’s finest games.

Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu is a fun diversion for the brief time that it lasts. The game is bright and full of personality, the platforming is spot on, and the levels are inventive.I wish it was a little longer and more challenging, but that doesn't stop me from replaying some of my other cherished NES games, and I will surely play this one again.

Hudson did a solid job bringing Jackie Chan’s Action Kung-Fu to the Turbo Grafx-16 and while it has its flaws it is still a pretty good game. Outside of imports this is one of the better action games for the system.

Graphically I thought that this was really quite nifty. All of the characters have been very well drawn and the whole appearance given is that of a cartoon. The backgrounds are all very nicely drawn and there is some very pleasant looking parallax scrolling giving the game a thoroughly professional appearance. you would never believe that this was simple 8-bit technology running this game. Despite the excellent presentation this isn't the most interesting game you will ever play. The storyline is far from original and the control system is a little on the dodgy side. Initiating the various karate moves is clumsy and you will often find that the thugs get the better of you before you realise it. These quibbles aside it ain't 'alf bad and it's certainly one of the better whallop 'em-up games for the Engine.

While the name may not ring a bell at first, it shouldn't shy you away from what is, in reality, a quite good game. Mixing elements from both action games and other popular games, Jackie Chan puts together a challenging assortment of enemy characters and Bosses. Give it a try!

Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu doesn't strive to be much more than a middle-tier action game. But at the same time, it does an excellent job of giving our hero plenty of bad guys to beat up and backgrounds to see. Even the anticlimactic ending (which involves two people just staring at each other for an uncomfortable length of time) isn't enough to keep me from recommending this NES cartridge. It's a solid action game, but with a name like Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu I just expected more.
