The mission is difficult to even begin, never mind complete. There is a save game option onto the cartridge but this can only be used after successful completion of a section. Lagoon, compared to so many others before it, includes both good and bad points, and that's about all you can say about it!

If i'm preaching to the converted then I have to say that, while not on the scale of Zelda, this is a very nicely structured and playable RPG of the sickeningly cute variety.

Action RPG fans will appreciate Lagoon's staff & crystal swap magic customization system. Hardcore players will draw a sense of challenge from completing some of Lagoon's more labyrinthine dungeons. While often compared (negatively) to the Legend of Zelda, Lagoon stands on its own as a memorable game in its own right.

Lagoon is a mixture of a hackneyed plot, cheesy sounds and visuals, very little fun, and a severe need for Cloud's Buster Sword, which gave humongous weapons the fine image that they have today. Freak the Mighty, on the other hand, is a well-written story of a hulking oaf who teams up with a maniacal midget genius to bring joy and excitement to the world. It tackles the issues of the drudgery of everyday life and even shares some pearls of philosophical wisdom on death, while still being a comical joy to read. If you have a wad of cash, guess which product I'd suggest you buy. FtM gets an 87% Overall, while Lagoon gets a meager 73%.

In summary, Lagoon is a bland action-RPG that was unique at the time of release but has not held up well over time. While the game is playable, gameplay is lacklustre because of poor sword-play and bland graphics (which make the dungeons hard to navigate). The game has some stellar parts including a moody and awesome soundtrack and a cool magic system that provided some unique flexibility to dispatching enemies.

Lagoon is, at best, vaguely interesting. The game lacks excitement and is little more than a poor translation of NEC's Ys Book I & II. Both the sound and graphics seem rather bland. The gameplay is okay, and some of the scenes in Phillip Castle give a very nice sense of depth with smooth multi-speed scrolling. The characters are larger than they are in Ys as well. On the whole, however, I would suggest this game only to Ys Book I & II lovers who either have very poor vision or a very small TV.

However, if you like games that are fun to play and don't encourage you to grind for hours in order to get pointless items, donât play Final Fantasy VII. But, donât play Lagoon, either. Play with atomic bombs, instead. Killing things is cool.

Should you consider yourself a person of good taste, do us all a favor and steer clear of this turkey before it becomes an analogy for self-abuse instead.

I take back what I said to begin. There IS a happy ending. If this review dissuades you at all from playing Lagoon, feel HAPPY, and above all, grateful. And about my imaginary court proceedings? Kemco would have SETTLED. Make sure you don't.

Great plot, but poor programming
by Scott G (789)
The Good
This game is well written, like many RPGs made in this time. One of the better non-Square or Enix RPGs.
The mazes are a bit challenging compared to many RPGs, which is good for those who like to be challenged in this fashion.
The Bad
Poor programming, its very easy for a boss moving boss to hit you at one spot and move to to another spot where you get hit again, sometimes you can die from this. Monsters were a little too predictive.
The compositions are catchy, a little too repetitive though, and there are only a few sound effects.
The Bottom Line
Its a good game if you really like the action RPGs like Seiken Densetsu or Zelda.
