Nothing is generic here. There is no rote, bland content only there to pad for time. Every feature of every place in this game is something you haven't seen anywhere else, maybe it's something you haven't seen in any other game before or since. If there's an herb there, that's the only place that herb will ever be. If there's a rolling boulder trap, it's not a minor inconvenience you can take on the face, suffer -10 HP, and keep on trucking, you either find a way to dive out of its path or it squashes you right back to the Game Over screen. What's best about Resident Evil, for all its burdensome controls and obfuscating camera angles, is that it's never arbitrary; nothing in this game is randomly allocated. If there's a zombie in that hallway, they put him there for a reason. If something's in your way, it's because the game has carefully crafted a route around it, you just haven't seen it yet.

Blood! Jill, see if you can find anymore clues. I’ll be examining this… I hope this is not CHRIS’ blood!

Gameplay wise, it's Resident Evil, so expect lots of puzzles, an interesting array of monsters to tackle, the odd satisfying boss fight, and some extremely effective exploration that slowly but gradually opens up the huge mansion. It's a very strong update of a classic game that is certainly worth its asking price.

Resident Evil will always be remembered as a classic video game that popularized the survival horror genre. Even to this day it still holds up as a fantastic video game. The puzzles are still a lot of fun to solve and shooting zombies is still a thrill. 20 years later Resident Evil is still worth your time. I wish more thought would have been put into the new control scheme to make it smoother, and there are features missing from versions of Resident Evil that came out 18 years ago, but this HD Remaster is still worth playing. Let’s just hope the next time Capcom re-releases Resident Evil they can take a look at getting rid of the inventory system instead of trying to fix the controls.

You're going to fall into one of two camps - either it won't be as great as you remember it being, or you've not played it yet and it just won't live up the hype everyone else has been drenching it in for the last decade-plus. It would be impossible at this stage, but even with that in mind, Resident Evil is still a survival horror classic - this just isn't a classic re-REmake. Now we'd just like Capcom to make a sequel worthy of this game's legacy.
