With this game, you know what youâre getting. Itâs the same Resident Evil from 2002, but with a few extra quality of life improvements, as well as the fact you can play it on-the-go. Honestly, thatâs all that was needed. Itâs a game that managed to age much better than a lot of its peers, despite the confusing control layout and slightly long loading times. If youâre a Resident Evil and horror fan, donât think twice. You may think that playing a game like this on a small screen might reduce its overall scare factor, but youâre wrong. Itâs as tense as ever and that makes it as fun as it has ever been.

In many ways, the first Resident Evil is â and can only ever be â a product of its time. Even when tuned and honed and buffed to perfection, it has its own idiosyncratic personality and ways; change them and you change the game. Cumbersome and horrifying in equal measure, it refuses to let you have your brains and eat them, so while series veterans will know what to expect, new players should prepare themselves for a schooling in game mechanics which have largely fallen out of fashion. Context is essential, then, but the Switch port shows this classic at its absolute best and thereâs arguably no better way to sample the original Resident Evil formula in 2019, provided youâve got the stomach for it.

An undeniable classic, and well worth a look for those wondering about the origins of what's become an incredible series, existing fans are sure to be delighted with the prospect of being able to play Resi on the go. But without the nostalgia factor, first-timers might be slightly less enthused by the overall experience.
