Counter-Strike: Condition Zero attempted to satisfy the fans of Counter-Strike by bringing in a new element of play, the simulated multiplayer mode. Fans and non-fans alike will either like or dislike this new mode of play. The mission based portion of Condition Zero proved to be interesting but lacked a solid story line to follow. If you like first person shooters or are a fan of Counter-Strike go ahead and buy Condition Zero. But for those who are starting to get into first person shooters, look else where, the $35 price tag isn't worth it.

Like Marmite then, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is not for everyone. Those well versed in CS's charms should stick to the existing free online game, while anyone tempted by CS:CZ's Deleted Scenes alone should instead investigate the far more polished counter-terrorist thrills of Soldier of Fortune II, based as they are on a 3D engine that doesn't quite qualify for its bus pass yet. In fact, and quite bizarrely, Condition Zero seems far better suited to new players; those looking for a more gentle introduction to the maps and tactics of CS before tackling the far more uncompromising world of human opponents out there. A mixed bag, then, and hardly worth the years we've had to wait, but far better than Valve's initial official effort at getting the game finished.

One main gripe likely to be leveled against Condition Zero: You can only play the game from the counter-terrorist perspective. Since, as Ken Drown likes to refer to it, the game is essentially “CS with training wheels,” that’s a bit of a bummer—it would have been nice to give new players some perspective on playing as a terrorist, too. Still, Ken is right in that Condition Zero is an easy way for newbies to grow accustomed to one of the most popular online games ever. As it turns out, it’s also fun for old- school CS players like me.

As an offline training tool for the hectic world of network play and a stepping stone to bigger and better things, Condition Zero is a triumph, but as a standalone game it can't offer more than 'more of the same'. Which is no bad thing.

Overall I'd say this game is good: if you're new to Counter-Strike and want to know what all the hubbub is about, the bot mode is a lot better way to learn how to play the game than getting repeatedly slaughtered online. And for CS veterans the new player & weapon models, maps and missions add enough to your favourite game to justify the purchase. Condition Zero is only let down by the outdated graphics engine.

Forty bucks? I could see giving this a hearty (well, hearty-ish) recommendation at half that price but forty dollars is a bit steep for what you're getting here. Gamers who don't already own the frenetic Counter-Strike should be attracted to this new game as a good introduction that helps them transition into serious online competitors. Gamers who already accomplished Counter-Strike players will find the offline component somewhat novel but not indispensable. It certainly doesn't do enough to compete with today's shooters and the fact that much of the game is already available in another format makes this version seem a bit redundant.

After so may delays one would expect the second coming of Jesus, but instead we’re given a disappointment (although a fun disappointment it is). The singeplayer is laughable, though I couldn’t help but having a somewhat enjoyable time with it. The deleted scenes are a nice distraction, but Condition Zero definitely should have been a budget title. The whole thing can be beaten in a few hours since there are only eighteen maps. With a free download you can get so much, so paying full price for this isn’t even worth it. Wait for the price drop on this one.

If anything, Condition Zero captures the true feel of a CS online game, and presents it for exactly what it is - the most addictive and popular online FPS game of the past 5 years. The game retails for $40, for what is essentially a rehash of the most popular maps, coupled with a few new arenas, with bots capable of making the game fun for lone wolves and LAN parties. If not for Turtle Rock Studios, Condition Zero may never have seen the light of day, and while Ritual and Gearbox did their damnedest to put an adventure spin on CS, it is apparent to the world that their best simply wasn't good enough.

Zwei Seelen wohnen, ach, in meiner Brust.

In the end, Condition Zero is a product that will appeal most to those players who haven't tried CS yet (and how many of them are there?), those who don't want to deal with the hassles of playing the game online, and those who just want to have some offline practice. For those of you who are already playing Counter-Strike online (let alone finished with playing Counter-Strike online), there isn't much reason for you to own Condition Zero, because it's basically the same thing you're already playing.

Jedoch darf man nicht groß überlegen was gerade geschah.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zeron tarjonta on kovasta yrityksestä huolimatta vähintäänkin laihaa. Eiköhän CS:n ensimmäinen inkarnaatio ala muutenkin olla jo näin Half-Life 2:sta odotellessa pikkuhiljaa tiensä päässä?

Was ist Dein Lieblings-Onlinespiel?

It's still a bit of an albatross, but this is by no means the turkey that everyone expected. Instead, it's a strong package that suffers partly because we were promised so much in the first place, partly because so much of it is available online for free, and partly because the new stuff is exactly the sort of thing Valve would have released for free in times gone past (and arguably did, given that bots made it into one of the beta versions of Counter-Strike before going AWOL when Condition Zero threatened to ship). Buy it if you live in a modem-shaped cave, if you're planning to move to an Antarctic research station for 12 months, or if you need a Rocky-style training montage to get you up to twitch killing standard. Just make sure you haggle.

Counter-Strike is an exceptionally engaging game mod and always has been. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is at a disadvantage because it doesn’t add anything to the brew that compels anyone to pay up to $40 for entry over what’s already available in the freely downloadable mod for Half-Life. There’s some value for newbies who want practice before exposing themselves to online fracases, and the AI does, with a couple of exceptions, fairly accurately render what online competition is like. Diehards won’t find enough here to make it worth the overzealous retail price point because, while the single-player mode and the deleted scenes are a fun diversion, they’re not enough to warrant the investment listed on the price tag. After the newness of those modes wears off, Condition Zero is basically the copy of Counter-Strike you likely already have.

If you already play and love the original "Counter-Strike," there's not much of a need to plunk down the money for this revamped version. The updated graphics and sound effects are an improvement, but the game is still inferior to modern PC games in this regard. Not to mention, there's something to be said for the massive community that may remain loyal to the original. If everyone decides to jump ship and make "Condition-Zero" the online game of choice, you wouldn't be in bad company, even if some of your new teammates end up being the remarkably lifelike bots.

Since Condition Zero is really just an extension of the six-year-old Half-Life, the presentation is, unsurprisingly, quite dated. Blocky models, simplistic lighting, and some ugly textures (particularly noticeable in the Deleted Scenes) just barely get the job done. At least the sound effects are solid, if overly familiar. The real crux of Condition Zero is simply that it provides a great way to enjoy Counter-Strike offline, old graphics or not. If you're perfectly happy playing the free Counter-Strike mod online, don't bother with Condition Zero. If botmatches are your thing, by all means, check it out.

To conclude, CS:CZ is Counter-Strike 1.6 with a few bad additions and one good one, namely the bots which will entertain you if you can't play online. So, is this title worth buying? Nope. Not worth the money. This retail package offers poor value and is a huge disappointment. Paying full price ($39.99) for a bots isn't a very wise decision since the multiplayer component is available for free (if you have a copy of Half-Life).

The fact is that when you can no longer pull amazing stunts and kill three enemies in a row, the fun of the game is really gone. Counter-Strike is surely going to go down in history as a phenomena of epic proportions, a game that brought together people from all across the world for years upon years, just to shoot each other with realistic guns and then to make fun of each other. It's simplicity and elegant strategic structure are what truly sets it apart from its peers. However, what we have here is the defective offshoot of a superb franchise, a heart-breakingly depressing port. Stay away, and get your fix elsewhere.

I suppose if you've never played CS (all 10 of you) and would like a glorified tutorial to get you going, then by all means, grab Condition Zero. The gameplay itself is still pretty fun and this package isn't bad for CS newbies, though at this point, how many of them are there? As for the millions of CS vets, as you were. This old soldier isn't worth it.

Fun at times, but there's nothing new
by Chris Jeremic (160)
The Good
I like the new High Def Models, and DE_Dust is VERY detailed now. The single player missions can be somewhat fun yet is the same game play only with selectable team mates. The game play is fun, even if it is the same as CS1.
The Bad
Well, the AI is Really Dumb and the game play is the same old thing, and I don't really care for the new Leet model.
It's also very glitchy, and my last complaint will be that some of the weapons are seriously underpowered.
The Bottom Line
It is a Good game. The new single player can be fun at times.
But there is nothing to new. I would play it over CS 1.6.
But the new AI is kinda dumb. Example: they will throw grenades at themselves, or not shoot until you are in front of them for 5 seconds.
If you are a CS fan I would buy it; if not, buy CS 1.6 first.
