Empire of Sin is a grandiose lesson in the turn-based tactics genre. Where it emerges is the variety of customization afforded to the player, as well as an almost open-world playstyle through the conquering of each neighborhood. Attention to detail is big, with real-life gangsters and "alternative entrepreneurs" making up a large cast in Empire of Sin. Sit downs, or the ability to have a dialogue between these main characters, adds a fun twist and opens up diplomacy options to the genre as well. While it can chug to a slower pace at times because of trivial combat, Empire of Sin really delivers big with a customizable and unique experience that should have you putting tons of hours into it.
Nov 30th, 2020 · Windows · read reviewEmpire of Sin has its bugs and some rough cinematic moments. But Romero Games pulled this project off with a team of just 30 people. For a game of its ambition, that seems like a small team. It's pretty much an indie project, or perhaps "double-A," compared to other games that are more polished but have hundreds of developers — or even more — working on them. What I also liked was that the game feels smart. I felt like I was playing against other crime bosses who were figuring out how to outthink me or double-cross me. And that's what you want in a gangster game.

I deeply believe that there are the bones of a good game buried here. And the fixes might be easy. Or they may never come. As it stands now, I had quite a lot of fun with Empire of Sin, but I couldn't get a groove going. It's hard to recommend before a bit of an overhaul.

The way Empire of Sin combines diplomacy, turn-based combat, and narrative gameplay mechanics is incredibly ambitious. While there's plenty to keep you engaged, the format doesn't always work, and sometimes it's easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stats and missions. Even though the game has its shortcomings, its atmosphere, characters, and environment are fantastic. And if you decide to persevere, there's plenty to love in Empire of Sin.

Empire of Sin delivers a clever, genre-melding experience that perfectly marries the world of 1920s organized crime with strategy gameplay. Bugs and a lack of combat speed or automation options can grind its pace to a halt, but it does a stellar job of putting the player in the mindset of a mob mastermind (or a gun-toting buffoon) with streamlined speakeasy management.

Genre und Setting? Genau meins!

Vo výsledku je Empire of Sin zaujímavým poňatím populárneho XCOM. Náhodne generované štvrte a veľké možnosti výberu mafiánskeho bossa značne prispievajú k opakovanej hrateľnosti. Empire of Sin momentálne zaujme najmä priaznivcov mafiánskej éry či zarytých fanúšikov herného štýlu XCOM.
Dec 2nd, 2020 · Windows · read reviewDespite all of my gripes, however, the game does look fantastic and the soundtrack is excellent. I love the sound design on the streets of Chicago, and the seamless way you drop in and out of buildings by zooming in is awesome. If you've ever wanted to go inside every building in an open-world game, Empire Of Sin will scratch that itch thoroughly. It's not just numbers, you can actually see the people puttering about in every racket you own, which is a hell of an achievement in this haphazard beast of a game.

It might not have been taxes that brought down our Capone, but irregularities in the numbers get us in the end. As our empire grows, concerns about upgrades, diplomatic relations and serving the optimal whiskey feel increasingly distant. And so we go straight for the kill, eliminating one boss after another. It's the baptism montage from The Godfather, and perhaps you could read our burned-out pattern recognition abilities as a proxy for Michael Corleone's growing emotional distance. But this is precisely the kind of legwork we've lost the taste for. In borrowing from stories that are so often about one kind of ambiguity, Empire of Sin creates another: the ambiguity of too many numbers and systems for any to feel significant.

Empire of Sin is an ambitious management game that never manages to tie together its big ideas. There's definitely a version of it in there somewhere that's good, and the allure of all those dense and malleable systems is strong, but they all come with massive caveats that dwarf what it does well. It's just a bit of a mess. It's frustrating. The potential is obvious, but it hasn't been realised.

Empire of Sin has too many bugs and too many balancing issues to make it worth putting up with its insanely uninspired combat and lacklustre story.
Dec 10th, 2020 · Windows · read reviewWhen negotiations break down and you end up in a shoot-out with enemies that look like they’re dressed for a wedding, Empire Of Sin feels like a farce worthy of a Coen brothers movie. That feeling is accentuated by a relentlessly cheerful swing soundtrack that plays forever with no regard to what’s actually happening. I love this about the game. The sight of a gang leader brutally shotgunning several enemy goons is only improved by some sick swing high-hat hits on an old fashion kit while horns parp happily. In these moments Empire Of Sin is a world I want to live in, but ultimately not a world I really want to manage.
