Expendable is 1-2 player, arcade shooting heaven (assuming you're into this genre). You'll want to play this one over and over just to see the sweet graphics. Expendable undoubtedly plays better on Dreamcast (compared to PC) and definitely doesn't have any conflicts, additional requirements, or loading problems.

Shooting everybody the fuck up!

If you desire a return to the old-school and want no more from a game than too simply to turn it on and start pushing buttons, Expendable is the game for you. No thought process necessary. While there has been an effort to overcomplicate games these days, with every button on the controller being used for something, Expendable is a refreshing blast of arcade gaming that never seems to get old. That alone warrants a good hard look at this visually flashy game.

Feuer frei!

While I would not condemn this game as unworthy of a look, I will caution that it will cause most gamers frustration. I am a casual fan of shooters so I found that there was just too much going on at one time and it was difficult to keep track of where my guy was at. I can't tell you how many times I thought I was the other player and vice versa. Still, this is a pretty cool looking game that will appeal to hardcore fans of this genre. Might be worth an evening rental to decide if it fits your style better than mine.

The end of it is, should you desire a return to the old-school and want no more from a game than to simply to turn it on and start pushing buttons, Expendable is the game for you. No thought process necessary, feel free to leave the gray matter at the door. While there has been an effort to overcomplicate games these days, with every button on the controller being used for something arcane, Expendable is a refreshing blast of arcade gaming that never seems to get old. That alone warrants a good hard look at this flashy game.

Very repetitive and unoriginal, fast-paced shooter.

Although some may be tempted to assign high ratings to Expendable due to its groundbreaking presentation, the truth is thereâs just not much there to back it up. Sure things are intense, and the action doesnât let up, but when youâre not having a seizure from trying to follow all thatâs happening, youâre cursing aloud and tossing the controller about the room because you canât move the main character in a straight line, let alone aim at the twenty aliens bearing down upon you. As a fan of this genre from way back, I like a good action title as much as anyone out there, but if thereâs anything Iâve learned over the years, itâs not the visuals that make a winner, itâs the gameplay. Donât be fooled by Expendableâs slick look and feel, because it reminds me of the supermodel stereotype. The game appears to be sleek and sexy, and might be fun for a quick romp, but comes up short on substanceâŠsave it for a rental, you wouldnât want to find yourself married to this one.

Expendable tries on numerous levels to become the 128-bit equivalent of Contra, but it seems to try so hard, that it fails on almost every level. Right from the start, the hilarious intro sets the wrong mood and the game tends to be very dark and surreal.

The levels and bosses are a pretty unspectacular, but at least there are some branching paths and secret side areas. There's a two-player simultaneous mode, but it's way too confusing with all the destruction going on. I like Expendable for its mindless mayhem, but its replay value is pretty low.

This game is like a shiny brand new Porsche without an engine: it's nice to look at, but is basically useless. Expendable has the depth of a wading pool, and the control of a three-year old who just ate a month's supply Sugar Pops. Even I, a die-hard fan of shoot 'em ups of all shapes and sizes, couldn't find much to like about Expendable. Unless you're really desperate for game that requires no thinking whatsoever and somehow possess the dexterity to control the damn thing (fat chance), stay far away.

The Good
Rambo banzai!! Shoot everything that moves! - and everything that doesn't.
The point of Expendable is like Contra, you have to progress forward while opposing enemies stand their ground and try to kill you. But there are 2-3 times more enemies than in Contra games, they are harder to get to, and in general the game is DARK. The precise warfare found in other one-man-army games.. isn't there. This definitely isn't Shinobi, or Metal Gear. Imagine Raiden, a game where bullets and missles never stop flying. Now imagine Raiden on the ground, in a pitch black night, and in control of a small man who can rotate 360 degrees to kill everything he encounters. That is Expendable. It isn't a fun game, but isn't complete "Vusar Zusar" garbage. It doesn't really do anything too bad.. but the problem is that it doesn't do much of anything good. Perhaps you could imagine Gauntlet Legends, but in a big exploding dark mess, with even worse graphics, and without the 4 player mode.
You just keep running up while holding the fire button down. When you get to a trench, its a 30 seconds fire-works display. You strafe avoiding the enemies bullets. Here and there you throw a grenade, or they shoot some rocket at you, or an explosive barrel blows up.. When the trench is cleared you start running again, after 5 seconds of empty road you come up to the next trench, and the action repeats.
The Bad
The worse part about this game are the graphics. Even when this game came out, I thought it looked terrible. Basically it looks something like a 3rd party N64 game, terribly blurry and blocky. The sounds and music in this game are not even up to par with Crusin' USA in the arcades. The control is the best part of the game and isn't even good at all, but it gets the job.
The Bottom Line
This is a typical Playstation game; on the Dreamcast. Imagine Fighting Force 2, and the pros and cons of that game. Now take almost all the pro's away, but leave the cons. The only pro being there is a 2 player mode where friends can team up together and run around 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' style. Other than that I can't think of a single redeeming value for it at all. But if you like to blow stuff up, and have played through all the much better Dreamcast ground-shooters out there (Cannon Spike, Charge N' Blast, Alien Front Online, Fur Fighters, Zombie Revenge) just to name a few, you could give this one a try if you really feel like you need to. It is a fully working game, just not a very pleasing one.
