Parece que tras multitud de varapalos tanto de críticas como de ventas Cryo sigue en pie. Con otros nombres, con un mínimo lavado de cara, pero vivito y coleando, y sacando juegos. Atlantis es la saga de juegos de Cryo más importante, ya que ha sido la que mejor se vende, la que más ha aguantado en el mercado, la que primero se editó en el formato DVD, y quizás, la más equilibrada de la decadente etapa del Omni3D.

When I watched this game being demoed at E3 this year, I was blown away by the lack of standard static backgrounds, coupled with the full control first person perspective that this game offered. Being a fan of adventure games since the days of King’s Quest, I am pleased to say that this game manages to recapture the fun of the Adventure game genre, mixing character involvement with good graphics and a great story to make an immersive gaming experience.

Overall, I liked Atlantis Evolution well enough. It was silly in all the right ways, and the graphics and the voice acting got the job done. So if you like strange but straightforward adventures, then you might enjoy Atlantis Evolution. But if you want more of a serious game with serious puzzles, then you’d probably be best looking elsewhere.

Je dois dire que je partais avec un préjugé très défavorable sur ce jeu. En effet, dans la série des Atlantis, je n’avais fait que le deuxième du nom, que beaucoup avaient considéré comme le meilleur de la série. Personnellement, ce fut un des pires jeux auxquels j’avais joué jusqu’à présent, notamment pour l’illogisme et la très grande difficulté de ses énigmes. Quand j’ai su en outre que le dernier épisode d’Atlantis, le dénommé Evolution, avait été descendu en flèche par la critique, je redoutais vraiment le pire (et même plus que ça).

Atlantis Evolution presents an engrossing alternate reality, with lively characters and a good story. It's backed up with solid graphics, a simple interface and a great soundtrack. Curtis Hewitt is a sympathetic character, and we really end up caring about his fate as well as that of the Atlantians he meets during his journeys.

Möglicherweise waren wir in unserer Preview etwas vorschnell, denn die Story bietet kein zweites The Moment of Silence. Dennoch ist Atlantis Evolution ein flott gemachtes Render-Abenteuer, das an einen spannenden Kinofilm erinnert, in dem ständig etwas Neues passiert. Die abgeschottete Welt, die ihrem rigiden Götterglauben nachhängt, ruft Erinnerungen an die USA nach dem 11. September wach. Ein Zufall? Vielleicht. Vielleicht sollte man auch nicht zu viel hineininterpretieren, wie Tester das gern machen. Jedenfalls gelingt es dem Adventure, den Eindruck einer eigenwilligen Welt zu erwecken, die es zu erkunden lohnt. Lediglich der verhaltene Beginn, die wenig fordernden Minispielchen und die schnell gelösten Rätsel stoßen negativ auf. Atlantis Evolution wendet sich daher eher an diejenigen, die ohne allzu große Denkaufgaben ein paar Stunden Adventure-Spaß haben wollen.

This game was made with adventure fans in mind. If you love the adventure genre this game will likely be right up your alley. There is nothing new to add to the genre and nothing in particular stands out as being outstanding. Still Atlantis Evolution is a solid adventure game that is reminiscent of Myst. For those of you waiting for Half-Life 2, well you’re probably not even reading this review. Enough said.

The reason for my fears is the fact that a new developer team was put on the Atlantis Evolution project who should have built in many action sequences, which are not much appreciated by adventure gamers. Thus I simply began to play to form my own opinion about it.

Parts of Atlantis Evolution show that the development team is indeed capable of creating an entertaining experience. Hopefully, the serious problems that hurt this game can be avoided in the next installment in the series. In the meantime, Atlantis Evolution will have to do, assuming you can put up with its considerably frustrating aspects.

Insgesamt betrachtet ist 'Atlantis Evolution' ein solides Spiel, das dank der ausgefallenen Story und der weitestgehend gelungenen Präsentation etwa acht Stunden gute Unterhaltung bietet. Leider sind aber die Schwächen bei den Rätseln unverkennbar. Die Labyrinth-Rätsel unter Zeitdruck können den Spieler schnell frustrieren, während die Minispiele zwar Spaß machen, aber nicht unbedingt in ein Adventurespiel gehören. Fans der 'Atlantis'-Reihe können getrost sofort zugreifen, andere Spieler sollten eher auf eine Budget-Version oder ein anderes Spiel warten.

Schon vor Jahren hieß es: Kennt man ein Cryo-Adventure, kennt man sie alle. So ist es leider immer noch, denn auch mit Atlantis 4 bleibt die Revolution aus. Aber selbst von einer Evolution - wie im Titel versprochen - kann nicht so recht die Rede sein, denn bis auf die häufigeren Zwischensequenzen und animierten Dialoge gibt es wirklich nicht viel Neues: Die Grafik ist zwar nett gerendert, kommt aber verwaschen auf den Bildschirm. Die Rätsel sind nachvollziehbar, aber nicht gerade originell. Und die Geschichte hat ihre Momente, von grandioser Erzählweise ist aber auch sie weit entfernt. Schade, aber so bleibt ein Myst-Abklatsch, der nur absoluten Fans dieser Adventure-Gattung zu empfehlen ist.

Niestety, niewiele dobrego można powiedzieć o Atlantis Evolution. Może to sygnał, aby przestać męczyć graczy kolejnymi nieudanymi projektami, albo wręcz przeciwnie – aby wreszcie zrobić to dobrze. Panowie, choć raz.

Atlantis Evolution ist kein schlechtes Spiel, das muss einfach mal gesagt werden. Wenn man mal wieder so einen Quickie-Review der Presse gelesen hat, dann weiß man genau, dass dort kaum länger als 20 Minuten gespielt wurde. Der Anfang ist schon etwas dröge und nicht so spannend. Doch das Abenteuer kommt dann doch langsam in Fahrt. Man klickt sich von Location zu Location, die zwar etwas steril und grafisch besser sein könnten, doch dennoch eine abwechslungsreiche und schöne Welt präsentieren. Die Rätsel sind abwechslungsreich, meist logisch und eine gekonnte Mischung aus Dialogen, Rätseln, Schleichpassagen und Minispielchen. Bis auf den sehr großen Wald oder die langen Wege gegen Ende, ist es ein unterhaltsames und nicht zu schweres Spiel für Leute, denen Knobelkisten a la Myst zu schwer sind. Für den Einstieg in die 1st Person-Adventurewelt wunderbar.

So what we’re left with is a game that has major highs – the plot, the graphics, the soundtrack - and major lows – the arcade sequences, twisty jungle mazes, lame dialogue and timed events. By my reckonings that balances out to an average game, but the AE development team shows great potential and I get the same feeling from them that I do from Frogwares, that they have a classic adventure game in them waiting to come out under the right guidance (crack that whip Lorraine!). I present as evidence the day and night differences between Frogwares Sherlock Holmes: Mystery of the Mummy and Sherlock Holmes & The Case of the Silver Earring and look forward to the future.

Atlantis Evolution est l'archétype même du jeu pop corn : aussitôt terminé, aussitôt oublié. En effet, même si on passe quelques bons moments et que son univers est accrocheur, il faut bien avouer qu'il n'apporte finalement rien au genre et qu'il fait pâle figure face au fantastique Myst 4. En outre, l'aspect linéaire est ici poussé à l'extrême et le jeu vous empêche d'avancer - par exemple en plein milieu d'un chemin pourtant ouvert - si vous avez oublié de parler à une personne ou de prendre un objet.

If and only if you're a hardcore adventure gamer who absolutely cannot continue to exist unless they conquer every adventure game ever made should you consider purchasing this title. Otherwise, steer clear. It has a few redeeming qualities, but for the most part Atlantis: Evolution is a confusing, annoying experience that does not deserve space on your hard drive.

Gleich zu Beginn des Spiels fand ich die gebotene Story fade wie einen Diätjoghurt, doch wer die erste halbe Stunde übersteht, bekommt eine originelle Story präsentiert, die sogar ein wenig Anti-Klonpolitik versprüht. Die Sprachausgabe ist zumindest in Ordnung, und der Held halbwegs sympathisch. Doch die Cursor-Kreuzfahrten und die frustrierende Rennerei nach Gegenständen machen mich regelmäßig wahnsinnig. Abgefahren finde ich die trashigen Klassikereinlagen. Allein schon deshalb habe ich bis zum Ende gespielt. Schließlich wollte ich wissen, welcher Oldie den Endgegner plättet. Wer für Revivals nichts übrig hat und ein gutes Render-Adventure sucht, sollte lieber zu Myst 4 greifen.

Atlantis Evolution really feels like a wasted opportunity. The setting and story hold so much promise, yet thanks to some frustrating puzzles and lousy design choices, it's hard to really enjoy them. Instead of being able to thoroughly enjoy the fascinating world you're given to explore, far too much of your time will be spent repeating the same timed sequences until you can figure out how to proceed. Like the mythical city it's based on, Atlantis Evolution should probably just stay hidden.

Atlantis Evolution is a good-looking game with some great animated sequences and a fun, if somewhat campy story. But since this is a GameBoomers review and I know some GameBoomers members are physically unable to handle even relatively simple dexterity-based "challenges," I can't give it an unreserved recommendation. However, if you can handle the action-based parts, you may enjoy the adventure-style parts and the exceptional graphics and animations.

Despite the frustration that typifies all such adventure games, the plot of Atlantis Evolution helps to compensate. While I'd differ with the publisher's claim that it provides 30 hours of gameplay, it was an interesting escape. The Adventure Company also says Atlantis Evolution is the beginning of a new series; we'll have to see if the next installment provides stronger characters, has fewer needles in haystacks, and loses the mini-games. If you or a person on your Christmas list would like an adventure game with a good short story and wouldn't mind a few old-school arcade moments, Atlantis Evolution might suffice, but it's far from being a must-play.

Mystery Manor (5 out of 10)

If you are desperate for some new eye candy or, like Team B, have an overwhelming sense of nostalgia for the arcade games of the early 1980’s, then you might find some enjoyment in Atlantis Evolution. Otherwise, your best bet is to give this one a miss and replay Atlantis II instead.

There are times when playing Atlantis Evolution could make Chinese water torture look like an appealing alternative. The writing and voice acting are so bad they're almost good--you probably won't find more unintentional camp humor in a game. The interface can be cumbersome. The gameplay will have you shaking your head in disbelief and disgust as you encounter one badly designed puzzle, maze, or action sequence after another. Fortunately, if you can bear playing Atlantis Evolution long enough, it starts to get better toward the end, but by then it's scant consolation.

In spite of all this, I really wanted to like Atlantis Evolution. I really did. That's because in spite of having all this stuff wrong with it, the storyline... well, the storyline sucked too, but it sucked in an entertaining way. I caught myself going "Oh, that's horrible!" about each new plot twist even as I was cracking up over it. If the Mystery Science Theater 3000 gang were still plying their trade, they'd have enough material in this game to keep them going through all four CDs.

I can only end by repeating that Atlantis Evolution is a highly frustrating game. If looks are all that count then it's very good looking, but as an adventure game it falls short of providing a satisfying experience. It would have been much improved minus the mini games, with a lot less dying, and with more attention paid to the adventuring puzzles.
