Super Runabout: San Francisco Edition

A definite and obvious improvement over the Japanese release. Either Interplay read my preview or they came to the same conclusion about the needed enhancements. Anyway, I can recommend the American version to those who seek more Crazy Taxi like driving action... like me!

I do have some reservations, however. Graphically, the game is plagued by some slight slowdown and major collision bugs. Sometimes your car goes right through textures and obstacles. Also, the art direction and visual look of the game falls well below what was accomplished in Crazy Taxi. Overall, it’s just not as polished. Despite these minor gripes, I would highly recommend this game to fans of the genre.

For players of the racing genre who want a great laugh and the ability to destroy anything and sometimes everything, Super Runabout is for you. If you can overlook the minor gameplay bugs and enjoy the comical quality of the game, you will find the game appealing and entertaining if nothing else.

Super Runabout es un juego que bien nos puede entretener durante una semana, pero después de ese tiempo y una vez exprimido, rara vez se tocará de nuevo; teniendo clara esa premisa, si ya estáis hartos de conseguir "crazy money" este GD tal vez os pueda resultar interesante, aunque salvando siempre las distancias con la genial obra de Hitmaker.

Super Runabout kämpft hauptsächlich mit einer nicht vorhandenen Fahrphysik und den daraus resultierenden Gameplay-Schwächen. Eine lächerliche Kollisionsabfrage und ein ebenso witziges Schadensmodell tun ihr Übriges. Trotzdem (oder gerade deswegen): Der Titel weiß zu gefallen und versprüht einen kurzweiligen Charme, der den Spieler rund 3 - 6 Stunden an den Bildschirm fesseln kann und ihm ein Gefühl der Freude entlockt. Wer auf Funracer steht und etwas Abwechslung von Crazy Taxi gut gebrauchen kann, der wird bei Super Runabout durchaus fündig. Freunde realistischer Rennspiele, die etwas Abwechslung von MSR und Co. gebrauchen können aber leider nicht.

Spaß macht SR auf jeden Fall dicke, leider drückt die relativ schwache Grafik (viele Pop-Ups, ungenaue Kollisionsabfrage, Frame-Rate-Drops) etwas aufs VG-Spielspaßbarometer, das in diesem Fall bei “70“ stehen bleibt. Unverständlich auch, warum eine Schadensanzeige erst unmittelbar vor dem Exitus eingeblendet wird. Trotzdem: Wer Crazy Taxi mochte, wird auch Super Runabout lieben, das zudem deutlich mehr Abwechslung und einen ebenso coolen, wenn auch nicht ganz so exzellenten Rock-Soundtrack von den “Surf Coasters“ bietet.

Okay, es stimmt: Auch die PAL-Version beleidigt den technisch ambitionierten Spieler mit hässlichen Groß-Pop-Ups, Polygon-Fehlern wie Zäunen oder Ampeln aus Luft und einer schwammigen Steuerung. Aber wisst ihr was: Es macht trotzdem Laune, durch ein lebendig animiertes und mit vielen Details ausstaffiertes San Francisco zu brettern und dabei total freakige und abwechslungsreiche Aufträge mit coolen Gefährten vom Dreirad bis zum Panzer zu erledigen. Hot Dogs sammeln, Cable Cars rammen, rasante Verfolgungsjagten absolvieren - es ist ständig die Hölle los an Kaliforniens Küste. Schaut unbedingt mal rein!

Super Runabout ist ein cooles Spiel mit vielen Ideen. Leider zerstört die fatale Steuerung anfangs recht positiven Eindruck total.

The Video Game Critic (C+)

It sounds like Crazy Taxi, but Runabout's physics are more realistic and less forgiving. Many vehicles handle very poorly, but you can build up some serious speed on the straight-aways. You have the option of viewing a replay after each mission, and unlike most games, they're actually a lot of fun to watch! The audio is probably the weakest aspect of the game. The folksy background music loops ad nauseum, and some of the cars sound more like vacuum cleaners. Super Runabout lacks the polish and addictiveness of Crazy Taxi, but it isn't a bad title if you can pick it up for a reasonable price.

GameSpot (5.4 out of 10)

It almost goes without saying that this game compares poorly to Sega's similar driving game, Crazy Taxi. While Super Runabout clearly wins in the area of extras (there are many bonus vehicles to open up, for example), the basic gameplay is nowhere as engaging as Crazy Taxi, and few people will delve in deep enough to experience it. Many games try to test your skill, but Super Runabout works to exercise your sense of frustration.

Super Runabout aurait pu être un titre qui aurait su, à grands coups de volant, enrichir le genre course/action assez pauvre sur Dreamcast. Au lieu de cela, une jouabilité désastreuse et plusieurs défauts graphiques rendent ce titre injouable et réservé à une clientèle d'accros de la démolition urbaine et routière.

If you hate being flipped over and looking at the world upside down, then be prepared. The worst part is you may expect this to happen in large collisions but not going over a pot or something else on the road in Chinatown. It then takes a long time to correct your car and get on with the mission - having wasted a large chunk of time on your back. Getting stuck between a wall and an invisible obstacle will not enhance your enjoyment of the game either. Super Runabout: San Francisco Edition is an unoriginal idea let down by the awful presentation, handling and graphics. Do yourself a favour and buy Crazy Taxi or wait for the sequel. Poor all round.
