Description

Katakis was the first R-Type influenced side scrolling shoot 'em up. You control the H-75 Eagle Fighter against the machines which have overrun a peaceful planet, with an indestructible satellite and collectable power-ups to help you through 12 levels. Each of these have lots of parallax scrolling and some direct influences from films including Aliens and The Terminator.

The game can be played in co-op with one player steering the ship and another steering the satellite (C64 version only).

Trivia

Copyright infringement

Activision Europe, the holder of the rights for home versions of the arcade game R-Type threatened legal action due to similarities of the two games. The dispute was settled by allowing Rainbow Arts to re-release Katakis as Denaris with graphical changes to mask the similarities and in an unusual twist, Rainbow Arts would handle the C64 and Amiga ports of R-Type since their ability to deliver was already proven.

Gameplay

The sound of the shooting changes its pitch along with the music playing in the background.
