Stunning to look at, great to play and packed with many useful and exciting features - F 15 II is definitely top gun in the flight simulator stakes.

So why pick this over Falcon? In terms of being a flight simulator, Falcon has the edge, but even so, this is ideal for a beginner, as it's very easy to fly and it's a lot of fun. Also, experienced buffs are going to get a lot of fun out of this simply for the large number of missions involved and the variety of sceneries. In terms of accuracy, it may never match up to the might Falcon, but I can still see myself putting in more than a few hours on this one yet.

Despite this, Strike Eagle II is an excellent simulator, rendered very playable by Microprose's own admission that it "stripped away all the boring elements" of flying. Whether napalming villages in Vietnam rates as "fun" is debatable, but Strike Eagle II is very fast, very challenging and very good.

However, there are a couple of curious shortcomings. For example, although the satellite map on the left of the cockpit shows the position of your F-15, enemy missiles and ground installations, it doesn't pick up enemy aircraft - you can only spot these on your tactical display. Also, ground installations that you blow up during the course of a game don't stay blown up! But these may be considered as small hiccups in an Otherwise enjoyable - and graphically stunning - fight and flight simulator.

Nun, ein bißchen realistischer hätte das Ganze schon ausfallen dürfen: Die F-l5 hält z.B. unglaublich viele Treffer aus, und von den vier Schwierigkeitsgraden ist für den Profi nur der schwerste eine echte Herausforderung. Aber das Spiel macht durch seine herausragende optische Präsentation (vor allem natürlich auf schnellen ATs mit VGA) wieder einiges wett; wer also Simulationen am liebsten hübsch verpackt und mit einer Extraportion Action mag, darf hier praktisch blind zuschlagen.

Volltreffer! Eine Rakete knallt in meine F-15 - und nichts passiert. Sogar mit vier Löchern im Bauch fliegt die F-15 noch wie ein junger Vogel. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, daß das sonderlich realistisch ist. Außerdem fliegen sich die Missionen sehr ähnlich; auf Dauer fehlt mir trotz spektakulärer Grafik die spielerische Abwechslung. Wer aber nur à la Rambo über Libyen lümmeln will, bekommt viel für sein Geld geboten. Wie üblich liefert Microprose packende Szenarien, Piloten-Rummel mit militärischen Rängen und massig spielerischen Feinheiten. die einen immer wieder an den Computer locken.

Zusammenfassend, ein technisch gut gemachtes, moralisch aber eher fragwürdiges Spiel.

Somit dürfte das ohnehin schon große Angebot an Flugsimulatoren für den PC um einen weiteren sehr interessanten Beitrag gewachsen sein. Wer auf eine kampfbetonte Flugsimulation steht, ist mit F15 STRIKE EAGLE II gut beraten. Als Mindestausstattung empfehle ich 8 Mhz und wenigstens EGA mit 1 6 Farben, die uns auch zum Testen vorlag. Die Bewertung bezieht sich auf diese Gerätekombination. Alle anderen Konfigurationen dürften den Spielspaß erheblich einschränken.

Wer also schon den F-19 hat, kann sich allerhöchstens über eine zusätzliche Grafikstufe beim F-15 freuen. Ansonsten ist alles gleich geblieben, allerdings ist beim F-l5 die Tastaturbelegung um einiges sinnvoller. Ein bißchen mogelpackungsmäßig kommen uns die angepriesenen »unzähligen« Missionen vor: Zwar unterscheiden sich die Aufträge durch Verteilung der Feinde sowie deren Zahl und Können voneinander, aber das Grundprinzip ist stets das gleiche. Zwei Bodenziele sind Ihr primäres und sekundäres Ziel, und einige feindliche Flugzeuge und SAM-Stationen wollen Sie vorzeitig vom Himmel holen. Mehr tut sich auf Dauer nicht, und die Abwechslung kann man mit der Lupe suchen. Für Simulationseinsteiger, die auf schnittige Effekte stehen, hat das Programm sicher seine Berechtigung. Geübte Piloten, die Simulationen wie »F-16 Falcon« im Schlaf beherrschen, werden allerdings etwas unterfordert.

F-15 II is a gamer's game. Realism has been deliberately minimized in order to yield an entertaining product. There are few combat simulators that my ten year old son enjoys, but both he and I had a lot of fun with F-15 II. The only hesitation this reviewer has is concerning the large number of combat simulators currently available. For the dedicated aerophile, this may be too simplistic. For the neophyte, the large number of simulators available offers a confusing choice. But overall, F-15 Strike Eagle II is a solid package of entertainment.
