With so many elements appearing basic and unremarkable with the unforgiving passage of time, this classic perseveres as a true classic should, boasting a fun factor that will continue to surprise and engage you.

All in all, Gunhed is amazing, spectacular and a shooter that shouldn't be missed.

Urbleburbleburble. Utterly incredible, super-smooth, ultra-fast mega-blast that blows all other shoot 'em ups out of the water. Buy it and kiss your joypad arm goodbye.

1UP! (94 out of 100)

Quite possibly the finest blaster ever. Fly through horizontally-scrolling space levels, laying waste to everything. Unparalleled gameplay and some of the clearest speech you'll ever hear.

Blazing Lazers gave that Zen feeling shooters were known for, when you feel like you're a part of the ship. Its length and challenge were just right, and it made all other shooters of the 80s look like scrap.

All in all, it's the type of shoot 'em up which demonstrates the amazing power of the PC Engine, and it's certainly proved that even R-Type just scratched at the surface. A must for any shoot 'em up freak.

Digital Press - Classic Video Games (9 out of 10)

There are only a few other shooters on the Turbo worth playing, but none even come close to the sheer brilliance of Blazing Lazers. Gamers will be in awe of the mesmerizing soundtrack, the flawless mix of color, pin-point control, and innovative power-up system. You really can't ask more from a game, shooter or otherwise. Very few shooters come to mind when trying to think of a game close to the quality of Blazing Lazers. This is a must own game for anyone with Turbo Grafx-16.

Blazing Lazers is one of the best shooters for the Turbo Grafx-16. That isn’t a knock against later titles; the game is that good. In those dark early days where quality titles were few Blazing Lazers was one of the best reasons to own the system and remains a great game today.

Defunct Games (85 out of 100)

During the TurboGrafx's short life span in the US it was graced with Blazing Lazers otherwise known as Gunhed on the PC-engine. Every shmup fan will tell you that it is not only one of the best games on the system but one of the best shooters ever made.

This vertical shooter must have been amazing when it hit the scene in 1989. Its excellent graphics feature an incredible number of objects moving on the screen at any given time, with no hint of slow-down.

Blazing Lazers may not have the power to dethrone Gradius III or R-Type III, but it still holds its own and is the best shooter ever for the TurboGrafx-16. Give it a look -- just be prepared to be confused at first at its perplexing path to powering up.

Power Play (80 out of 100)

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) (31 out of 40)

Blazing Lazers is the most intense shooter ever conceived. The play mechanics steal from the best the category has to offer, and thanks to the Turbo's advanced processors, the graphics and animation blow away all previous shoot-'em-ups. It's a bit easy, but top notch nonetheless.

HonestGamers (Staff reviews only) (6 out of 10)

In its very brief heyday, Blazing Lazers was one of the best shooters on the market. It's a shame that more people weren't able to play the game back when smooth shooter control was something special. Today, it's more notable for its nostalgic value: "Remember when floating skulls were COOL bosses?" Those days were indeed very cool, if a bit silly. Had the pacing not been so sporadic, and had the presentation offered more punch, Blazing Lazers could have soared as a timeless classic. It's instead a kitsch classic that serves better as a reminder of the past than as a serious competitor.
