Battlefield: Vietnam was a competent enough follow-up, but it didn't feel like enough of an upgrade -- it had plenty of rough edges and never caught fire the way the original game did. Now EA and DICE are back, looking to refresh the franchise with a full-on sequel -- Battlefield 2 -- that improves on the original game in almost every way. Although we have our nitpicks, this is the next must-have for PC gamers.

It might take months to say for sure, but so far, BF2âs rock-paper-scissors science seems soundâmore so than stealth-heavy Vietnamâs hide-and-seek, and maybe even more so than 1942âs groundbreaking balance. This is warfare in an age of camera-guided hardware, but if developer DICE has learned a lesson with its iterations of the series, itâs that hands-on know-how has to have its place, that too much âautomaticâ makes war hell instead of the helluva good time we all want. And it shows. Buggies slide sideways around corners, and gunships dart and fire down into the frayâwheeled or winged, vehicles here handle with finesse. But as with 1942âs tricky Messerschmitts, mastering them takes more than an explanation of what does what. It takes skill and a sixth sense to know what works and when. It takes practice, and Iâm only too happy to have more.

Much like the real military, Battlefield 2 is not just a game, itâs a way of life. There is no doubt that thousands of gamers are going to immerse themselves in this game to all new extremes and it will literally become their career. Youâre going to have that one guy who wants to be the best commander of all time and another who aspires to be a medic or pilot. The ranking and reward system encourages dedicated and extended gameplay, not only with new weapons, but with global scoreboards on special ranked servers, so you can find out who the best of the best is. But when it comes to multiplayer military games, Battlefield 2 is going to hold the top honors for a long time to come.

The best thing that we can say about Battlefield 2 is that even when it's at its worst, it can still be as much fun as its illustrious predecessors. However, when you experience Battlefield 2 like it's meant to be played, with everyone working together and using real-time voice chat, the game quickly becomes unlike anything else that you've played before. When it's at its best, Battlefield 2 elevates online gaming to whole new heights. Put simply, this is a thrilling and revolutionary game that just has to be played to be believed.

All in all, despite a few problems with lag and a buggy patch, Battlefield 2 has improved tremendously from earlier games in the series, particularly Battlefield Vietnam. The gameâs new Squad and Commander features alone are worth the upgrade. If you find a group of good, organized players all using VOIP, youâll wonder how you ever did and do without it in other games.

EA and Swedish developer DICE teamed up in 2002 to bring Battlefield 1942 into the world, and the game quickly garnered a huge following with its revolutionary team-based online FPS action. Since then, many titles have tried to replicate the Battlefield formula with varying success. DICE has now unleashed the true sequel (let us never speak of Battlefield Vietnam again), and itâs clear that the master has returned to the house. The additions in Battlefield 2 fit like a glove over the enthralling gameplay, and easily make this title the online game of choice for the modern warfare-minded.

In conclusion, it must be said that very few other games capture the visceral feel of being part of a large modern battle like this game does. Sound effects, graphical effects, and excellent squad mechanics all immerse you into the Battlefield world with deadly precision. The chaos of war really comes across as you sprint across the street, dodging .50 cal bullets, while trying to line up on the enemy sniper, watching your tank take out an enemy APC⊠and then get blown to bits by a fighter streaking overhead. Moreover, that can all be in about 15-20 seconds.

Fehlanzeige! Battlefield 2 is a superb sequel to what was a great game to begin with. The ability to now organise small squads gives the game a more structured feel and encourages team play a lot more than the previous Battlefield games. The modern weapons and vehicles really help to create a more dramatic atmosphere and it's quite easy to lose hours playing the game (even in single-player mode). Whilst the game is very impressive, it becomes more problematic for deaf gamers. Battlefield 2 now has voice support built in and indeed encourages hearing gamers to use voice communications to communicate with each other (and let's face it if you're a hearing gamer it's definitely a lot more convenient). The downside to this is that deaf gamers are going to be at a massive disadvantage and whilst text communication still exists, it's probably only going to be used in games that are exclusively made up of deaf gamers.

With tons of detail from the destructible environments to the animated mechanized gears on background machinery you're going to need a fairly robust computer with a new 3D card if you want to see everything. The animation is smooth and the sound effects are top shelf. Bullets whiz by, explosions echo in the valley and the screams of the enemy play like a sadistic symphony across the bloody fields. War has never been this much fun.

(...) It's the game's fundamental shift in focus from pure action to strategic play that really takes Battlefield 2 above and beyond the original. No doubt it'll take time for the community to clutch the game to its bosom - if only because so many of them favour shooting first before they've even thought of the questions - but once co-ordinated clans start taking to the servers, it'll change the face of Battlefield forever. Given that the game hasn't really evolved that much since its inception, can that possibly be a bad thing? Sir, no, sir.

Battlefield 2 marks the third game in the Battlefield franchise, and it is by far Digital Illusions' best endeavor. The teamwork aspect of this online shooter is emphasized using a variety of "kits" that define a soldier's role within a squad. Kits can be taken from fallen soldiers so that roles may be changed while in combat. The available maps are enormous, and the player is overwhelmed by the feel of modern warfare as jets race across the sky, choppers hover overhead, and tanks roll across the roads. The built-in voice-over-ip tools further enhance the gameplay even more by creating an easy means of disseminating orders. This is an impressive game in just about every respect.

In closing, while Battlefield 2 doesn't make any huge leaps over its predecessor, it is a very, very good game, and the more you play it, the more you'll notice how good it is. DICE Sweden knows their stuff. They've put a lot of work into ensuring that all the little details click as they should and that the gameplay is as fun and balanced as possible. I ask again; why fix something that isn't broken? I give Battlefield 2 two thumbs up and recommend it to the fans of the series. It's not a major upgrade, but the combination of the little things makes it an excellent addition to the franchise.

This is top-tier military FPS material, and Battlefield 2 secures its modern classic status with the inclusion of BFHQ. Your frag counts now have meaning: Battlefield 2 tracks and saves all your stats to the persistent BFHQ server. The more points you get, the greater your visible rank. Raise your rank and youâll unlock new weapons to use in combat, so you can create the ultimate squad with friends and build up your personal BF2 profile online while gaining status and capability. There are minor quibbles to temper all this BF2 praise: certain airfields are too easy to âjet campâ by bombing enemy planes as soon as they spawn, loading times are lengthy, and the server browser interface is rather bland and minimal. These elements may improve over time, as this outstanding shooter is destined to have a long life filled with upgrades, mods and expansions.

If Battlefield has a fault, then it's that it doesn't spew golden coins from the top of your monitor when you play it. More realistically, it's that as a multiplayer game which opened up its code to the community, inclusions in the latest edition are things we might have already seen (and become overly familiar with) in a mod capacity. If it wasn't for Desert Combat, the modern setting alone would be enough to make people queue up to reenlist in a Battlefield sequel. As it is, we're a little harder to impress. Basic limitations like a smallish selection of maps and that there's only one game mode included also makes hackles rise. It's lucky that the beauty of Battlefield is in the details.

Battlefield 2 is the true sequel to 1942. It's what everyone thought that would be only better. The game can get a little repetitive after the first 20 or so hours. After a few days break you can easily get back into the game. It has many faults by the intense vehicle power and how there is only one game type. But this can all be fixed by patches in the future. Also, there will be an expansion called Special Forces which will have new vehicles, weapons, maps, and more! It takes a more stealthy direction. It will be in buildings in close range or out at night while BF2 had only daylight maps. This game will also appear on the Xbox, PS2, and Xbox360. Although it will be stripped down so much it will seem like a different game. If you have the PC to run it get ready for a great experience as long as you don't get matched up with a bad team. Prepare, for Battlefield 2.

Sehr Empfehlenswert!

The Battlefield series is a favorite around the office at IGN. It offers up a unique shooter experience that you don't find elsewhere in a "realistic" setting. Vehicles and infantry move realistically, and weapons have firing cones and rates that mimic actual life fairly closely (balanced for fun, of course). More importantly, the pace of the game is undeniably fun, and the "Battlefield moments" like helicopters getting sideswiped by planes, tanks exploding, bodies catapulting across the sky, and so on, are all so frickin' cool that it's near impossible to stop playing. Battlefield 2 is a lot like the original 1942, in that respect. But this time around, the developers at DICE and publishers at EA have set out to create a more team-oriented experience with their official sequel, and they've done a terrific job at that.

Teambased shooters with large maps and vehicles/aircrafts really started to interest me starting from PlanetSide. Tribes came before my online gaming career, I stopped playing Operation Flashpoint and Tribes 2 (perhaps too) soon and Battlefield 1942 was a no go on a non-T&L chipset at the time. The past year the online fps genre really had an abundance of titles; Söldner: Secret Wars and Breed were big disapointments but Joint Operations, Tribes: Vengeance, Battlefield: Vietnam and Unreal Tournament 2004 (with its Onslaught mode) were quite decent titles and (with the exception of Vengeance) every time a success in sales. And this year we have Battlefield 2 (BF2).

The second will face the (gasp) ugly realities of multiplayer gaming that are exposed by trying to impose order on chaos. But they wonât complain. Instead theyâll find fun in competing as they would in any other first-person shooter. The game is excellent, merely sabotaged by lack of polish and in some circumstances, by human behaviour. This gem will take some time for you to pick up on and the range of play possibilities make this one a riveting challenge even after forty hours of play time. But, if anything it is this alone that makes it so addicting and by far one of the greatest PC shooters I have ever been able to get my hands on. Just don't blame me if you can't run the game -- I warned you!

The Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 is a double-edged sword for Battlefield 2: on one hand, its quality and attention to detail rejuvenated and broadened the appeal for the franchise; on the other, it took the thunder away from Battlefield 2's modern warfare setting. While Battlefield 2 definitely shines as the most impressive in the series, the lack of advancement to gameplay may give it a shorter lifespan than the original.

In summing up Battlefield 2, it can be said that this is a game that should have been nothing short of brilliant. In all areas it has the credentials but the bugs all point towards another EA title that has been rushed out the door. As an avid gamer I wish publishers would not have us beta test games on retail and have to wait for multiple patches for them to get it right. On the other hand, BF2 has what it takes to be the best FPS ever. Its squad based tactics are rewarding and the overall game does have the right fun factor to go along with the diverse gaming options. This is a game that would have scored a lot higher had it been released without the frustrating issues it has. We do recommend this as it is well worth the purchase, just expect to be frustrated until patches come along to sort things out.

Look no further for excellent squad-based on-line warfare.

The Good
Following in the grand tradition of Battlefield 1942, released four years ago, Battlefield 2 has you capturing and holding strategic locations, in an all-out-war against between various enemy nations; each equipped with an arsenal of real-world vehicles and weapons.
The wonderful thing about the Battlefield series has always been the great diversity in the roles for your soldiers. Battlefield 2 takes this even further, including a total of seven infantry classes: Assault, Special Ops, Medic, Engineer, Support, Anti-Tank and Sniper. Confuse the enemy with your smoke grenades, flash bangs and grenade launcher as Assault. Destroy enemy assets with remote activated C4 as the deadly Special Ops class. Be the Medic, and heal soldiers of their wounds. Don't forget that as medic, you can also use your defibrillator to revive recently fallen allies or shock enemy soldiers. Repair vehicles and lay anti-vehicle mines with the Engineer. Lay down suppression fire and resupply your friends with ammunition as the Support class. As the Anti-Tank class, wield a potent rocket launcher capable of destroying enemy armor. Last, but not least, reach out and touch the enemy as the Sniper, and secure in your position thanks to your Claymore mines. If the variety of soldier-types available wasn't enough, the game hosts a large selection of vehicles. Tanks, jeeps/personnel carriers, fighter jets, transport helicopters, helicopter gunships, landing craft, aircraft carriers, and so forth...
New to Battlefield 2 are on-line player statistics. With every battle, the player earns points which can lead to promotion in rank. New ranks allow players to unlock new weapons for the various classes. Soldiers can also earn various medals and badges for displayed excellence in various fields. Some are earned as simply as killing XX number of enemy players in a round with a given class, and others require months of play to achieve.
Another new addition is the squad and command system. At the beginning of each round, players can apply for the position of "Commander", higher rank having priority. Commanders scan for enemy units via satellite/UAV, temporarily displaying their position on the map for allies to see. Commanders can also drop vehicles and supplies, and lay down devastating artillery fire. However, commanders can be killed or have their satellite up-link temporarily destroyed. Having a good Commander in the field creates a feeling of camaraderie, and helps to focus the team's efforts as a whole. Working under the Commander are Squad Leaders, who are charged with relaying orders from the Commander to the various squads under the Squad Leader's command. This Commander/Squad combination works very well, especially when used with the included VOIP communication support. To top it off, BF2 servers can support up to 64 players at once (32 per team), so you can have a respectable number of squads in play per side.
The in-game graphics are quite excellent, and render mechanical, human and environmental locations with amazing detail. While it's not quite the detail found in games like Half Life 2 or Doom 3, it's impressive enough. Sound is equally satisfactory, with realistic sounding gunfire, and explosions, and like the original 1942, there are some incredibly catchy menu/loading tunes. Marvelous voice-work rounds out the audio department, with each faction speaking in their native language. (At least, so far as I can tell.) The VOIP audio is sometimes less than clear, but this may be a combination of poor microphone quality and connection issues.
The Bad
The game carries over many things from the previous BF1942, and this unfortunately includes the hefty system requirements. Even so long after release, the engine (game version 1.41), displays obvious need of fine tuning. Even on high-end machines, BF2 features lengthy load times, and this is followed by noticeable periods of disk access as virtual memory is cleared on exit. (Once I doubled my RAM from 1GB to 2GB, this later issue was solved.) Game client verification is done upon entering on-line servers, to check your game for hacks or other modifications. This can often take as long as the game takes to load the map, sometimes longer. Be assured that once the game has loaded, you're in for a treat, however these issues do add to the frustration level. All told, the process took about half a minute or more on my machine, which was noticeably above the recommended system requirements.
Bugs and design flaws in BF2 are noticeable, and quite annoying. Occasionally you will be disconnected once a map is loaded and you're about to begin play. Some players have reported earning hard-won medals, only to have servers which claim to report statistics, not send the data to the computer holding your character stats.
Hit detection is inconsistent, often odd. In one situation you might kill a man with 1 pistol hit to the head from 100 feet, and another might have you lying dead next to him, wondering why 5 point-blank shotgun blasts to his same head wasn't not enough. There were times where it required an entire clip to hit a stationary enemy, while I was prone on the ground, standing near him, and carefully controlling my burst fire. (This after nearly four months of constant play.) Even more strange, characters can dive to the ground, adjust their aim, and shoot perfectly within less than a second; hardly realistic by any standards. By no means is the combat entirely broken, but the hit detection/damage system errors are more pronounced than most first person shooters, causing even veteran players to pull their hair out, from time to time.
More so than the original 1942 game, Battlefield 2 features a limited single player mode, which is basically a single player version of the multiplayer setting, only with predictable AI soldiers. Sorry, no campaign mode. While this is somewhat disappointing, the main purpose of the game is multiplay, and it is there in which the game shines.
The pistol selection is rather basic, each nation having a statistically identical 15-shot 9mm pistol. (Some with silencers.) No .45 caliber USPs, Magnums or Desert Eagles here.
The Bottom Line
Playing Battlefield 2, it's not hard to feel like you're part of a real-world military action, everyone in the battle working together like a well-oiled machine, each doing their part. Rent the game or try it out at a friend's place. If you can get past the occasional bug, slow load times, and put up with the sometimes frustrating damage/hit detection, you're in for a real treat. There's so much to do, what with the various classes, different factions, and selection of vehicles, that it's sure to last you a long time.
