All in all, As Dusk Falls is a stellar example of the narrative adventure genre. A fantastic cast of characters are used brilliantly throughout, with twists and turns galore. The sheer breadth of choice and consequence mean there is scope for several playthroughs, and even when we’re bouncing between characters there’s cohesiveness to the story rarely found in gaming. Top it off with a stunning art style and soundtrack and we have not only one of the best examples of the genre, but one of the best titles of the year so far.

While playing solo provided an outstanding experience, replaying with a group led to a brand new experience with a course of events I never saw the first time through. The talented team at INT./NIGHT’s first release as a studio has certainly made a statement that they are here to stay, and I am personally very eager for their next project.

As Dusk Falls is a cracking crime thriller and feels like the exact thing we should be seeing on a regular basis from Xbox Game Studios on Game Pass. Its 6-8 hour length feels just right for a game of this nature, and that also makes it feel right at home on Xbox's subscription service. Oh, and the fantastic storyline that never let us wriggle free of its grip? Yeah, that's not a bad reason to play it on Game Pass either.

Even while the gameplay does not involve revolutionary breakthroughs, it indeed ensures that the players remain on their toes throughout. First and foremost, however, how well the audiovisual style works in conjunction with this production cannot be overstated. It's a highly replayable game with many different paths its plot may go. The story is fantastic to go through, and it makes you want to have more role-playing sessions with the characters to see how they would react differently to other scenarios.

L'eccellente recitazione italiana, poi, riesce a valorizzare al meglio la produzione. Peccato per qualche problema tecnico che comunque impatta minimamente nella fruizione del gioco, ma si tratta sicuramente di un'esperienza consigliatissima agli amanti delle avventure narrative e delle serie TV drammatiche, tanto più che la trovate inclusa nel Game Pass.

Keiner der Trailer konnte mir vorab ein gutes Gefühl für den sehr speziellen Visual-Novel-Stil vermitteln, der diesen Gangster-Thriller auszeichnet. Dafür funktioniert dieser dann im Spiel umso besser. Die aufs wesentliche reduzierte Spielmechanik räumt die Bühne für eine starke, durchweg interessante Story mit Gangster- und Familien-Drama. Deren Setting mit viel Cowboyhut-Flair und Hillbilly-Romantik muss man wie ich aber mögen, um mit dem Entscheidungs-Adventure von INTERIOR/NIGHT wirklich glücklich zu werden. Dann aber wird man mit glaubwürdigen Charakteren, nachvollziehbarer Motivation und vielen Grauschattierungen belohnt, die bis zum Abspann (und darüber hinaus) beschäftigen. (...) Das Erzähl-Abenteuer an der Route 66 beweist selbst Story-Skeptikern wie mir, wie packend das Medium Videospiel erzählen kann – und wie reife Skripte und großartige Sprecher eine Geschichte zum Leben erwecken.

Ondanks het Override-systeem dat niet helemaal lekker uit de verf komt, is As Dusk Falls een ervaring die je niet wil missen. Het is een genot om deze game met een groep vrienden te spelen door de talloze keuzes die constant een voelbare impact hebben op het verhaal. Dat je hier achteraf op kunt reflecteren en deze kunt delen (als je de game in multiplayer hebt gespeeld) maakt de ervaring extra tof. Mocht je de game alleen spelen, hoef je daarnaast niet bang te zijn dat de ervaring minder is. Het verhaal is fantastisch om te ervaren en smaakt naar meer speelsessies om te zien hoe de personages op een andere manier met situaties om zouden kunnen gaan. De artstyle zal alleen niet iedereen trekken en voor een vervolg zou wat meer verdieping in animatiewerk de game zeker niet misstaan.

De vele keuzes die je maakt worden afgewisseld met quick time events en geregeld kom je voor belangrijke momenten te staan, waarbij jouw actie direct grote gevolgen heeft. Dit maakt de game ook de moeite waard om meermaals door te spelen. De voice-acting zelf is uitstekend te noemen en de visuele stijl is om erg van te genieten, waarmee de ontwikkelaar toch een unieke presentatie weet te realiseren in een game die qua gameplay vooral gelijk is aan wat genregenoten doen. As Dusk Falls kent hier en daar wat kleine punten ter verbetering, maar in z’n geheel is het meer dan de moeite waard. Heb je Game Pass? Probeer de game dan zeker even uit!

As Dusk Falls is a fun little entry into the multiplayer movie-game genre. It's neat to see a crime thriller as opposed to a horror movie and that alone lends it some charm. Unfortunately, the second half of the story meanders and is more disconnected than the first half, but it still is worth experiencing at least once. It doesn't quite stick the landing as hard as you'd hope, but it has a lot of potential as a party game.

As Dusk Falls comfortably exceeds the standard of its genre when it comes to plotting, characterisation, performance and the impressive malleability of the story. It’s a story about trauma and what it takes to overcome it, really; reluctant teen criminal Jay Holt stayed with me, particularly, touchingly innocent despite what he’s been exposed to in his life. Narrative games exist outside gaming’s old technological arms race, now, and because we’re not focusing so much on how realistic they look, they’re free to tell much better stories.

For the most part, As Dusk Falls excels as an 'interactive drama.' With wonderfully crafted and relatable characters, superb voice acting, and unique art direction and animation style that lends itself to the story. The first few chapters alone are excellent, and they’ll have you gripping onto your controller when things are tense and utterly deflated when you’re forced into making a tough decision. The game is only let down by a weaker second act and a rushed final chapter, but overall, it’s still a great narrative adventure filled with dramatic moments, tension, and tough choices.

Even if not every choice has a world-shaking consequence, I still put much more time into exploring that narrative tree than I really needed to while playing As Dusk Falls, all because I liked the characters so much that I wanted to see what they'd reveal under a different set of circumstances. As Dusk Falls successfully bridges the gap between TV and games with an engaging, well-paced story that's full of memorable characters, and it reminds me of why I love this style of narrative-driven game in the first place.

As Dusk Falls toto všetko príjemne podčiarkuje hudbou, ktorá nie je vtieravá a ani veľmi rušivá. Síce sa nedá povedať, že by ste si ju obzvlášť zapamätali, ale v kontexte hry funguje dobre. Poteší česká lokalizácia, ak máte problémy s angličtinou či inými svetovými jazykmi. A vlastne poteší aj celá hra, ak máte radi pomalšie drámy s prepletenými príbehmi a neprekáža vám, že je hrateľnosť občas veľmi limitovaná. Ťažšie sa asi niektorým bude prenášať cez netradičné grafické spracovanie, ktoré nevyzerá zle, ale nedokáže až tak pohltiť ako napríklad v prípade hier od Supermassive. Nechýbajú ani multiplayerové možnosti alebo nastavenie pre streamovanie, v ktorom diváci môžu hlasovať o rozhodnutiach.

While getting 100% completion for the game can be a tough journey, you are rewarded with story details that open up character motivations and keep you thinking about the characters long after you put down the game.

As Dusk Falls er absolutt eit spel som lev opp til mantraet om at det ikkje er målet, men reisa som gjeld. Denne reisa vil eg hugse lenge.

Questo è comunque solo l’inizio per il team capitanato da Caroline Marchal, e siamo certi che le prossime scelte che il collettivo compirà saranno più a fuoco di quelle sperimentate in As Dusk Falls, la cui storia potrebbe avere ancora qualcosa da raccontarci.

“Il faut toujours que de la tête au cœur, l’itinéraire soit direct” disait Yehudi Menuhin. As Dusk Falls raconte une histoire touchante dont les thèmes universels abordés (la famille, le pardon, la loyauté) parleront à un public large. Mis en scène avec talent grâce à un montage inspiré et à des musiques bien choisies, le titre a la bonne idée d’alterner humour et noirceur, moments de bravoure et d’effacement. Passionnant dans sa première moitié, le soft édité par Microsoft peine à retrouver les mêmes fulgurances dans ses trois derniers chapitres, ce qui est regrettable. Doté d’un gameplay restrictif qui ne réconciliera pas les allergiques du film interactif avec le genre, As Dusk Falls brille par ses nombreux choix qui provoquent des conséquences bien réelles. N’est-ce pas le plus important pour un Interactive Drama ? Si vous possédez le Game Pass, il serait dommage de passer à côté.

Caro As Dusk Falls, ci eravamo tanto amati. Il titolo di debutto di Interior/Night, nella sua prima metà, ha saputo conquistarci con il suo stile grafico unico, ma soprattutto grazie al serrato susseguirsi d'eventi sui quali abbiamo avuto totale controllo, plasmando le sorti di un cast di personaggi a cui è molto facile affezionarsi. Poi ha voluto spezzarci il cuore, con un secondo atto dimenticabile e confuso, proprio quel genere di cattiva scrittura che riesce a macchiare indelebilmente l'analisi di un'avventura interattiva. Vorremmo davvero consigliarvelo a scatola chiusa, ma è la nostalgia del Desert Dream Motel a parlare. Avvicinatevi con cautela, magari se vi considerate dei fan delle avventure interattive.

Quello che dovrebbe essere il punto di forza di As Dusk Falls, ovvero il suo particolare stile grafico che lo avvicina a un fotoromanzo dipinto, distinguendolo dal resto delle produzioni simili, è anche il suo limite più evidente. Volti ed espressioni non sempre riescono a reggere il tono drammatico che la storia vorrebbe imporre e il doppiaggio purtroppo non aiuta. Tutto sommato la vicenda di Vince e degli Holt è avvincente, nonostante una scrittura non eccelsa. Nel complesso però si fatica a farsi catturare davvero fino in fondo, ma la possibilità di giocarlo in gruppo rappresenta uno spunto molto interessante.

As for me, my little family had a pretty good time playing a chapter each night over the course of a week. And while I doubt I’ll play again — I’m fine with how the story turned out for us — I’m pretty sure my mildly OCD daughter is already plotting to go back and fix all the things I made go wrong with my overrides. That makes it a perfect addition to Game Pass, as something for the subscribers in the house who don’t want to learn how to play something. While the storytelling has some shortcomings, it’s a fun story in episodic chunks that rivals your video streaming service of choice for a nightly episode.

As Dusk Falls is a valiant attempt to tell a good crime drama where actions have consequences. The story went on a lot longer than I expected, as the tense moments at the motel spawned a lot of different threads — both flash forwards and flashbacks — that I didn’t expect. But ultimately the tale failed to move me in the way that I had hoped for. The characters were caught in circumstances where they had nothing but bad choices, and it just made me think that the dumbest thing they did was to allow themselves to be caught in those circumstances. In that way, I don’t think the storytellers succeeded in created the empathy for characters on both sides of the events that they wanted. I would like to see more from this talented studio. But so far the story feels more like a TV show than a stellar movie, and more like a soap opera than a memorable drama.

I’d gone in hoping for a groundbreaking style of narrative-driven experience, one that operated on a sprawling web of branching paths over the course of 30 years of events, and was left underwhelmed by a fairly by-the-numbers entry in the genre that only dips its toe into its three decades-of family history and character entanglement. If you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll probably have some fun with this, but it’s hardly the revelation that the decision-based, narrative-driven genre feels like it so desperately needs.

Probablemente sus historias no dejen marcas y con el tiempo nos olvidemos rápidamente de ellas, pero serán una fuente de entretenimiento ideal para cuando solo necesitamos algo pasajero y divertido.

Without spoiling anything major, there’s a very important book that is discovered when the boys rob the sheriff’s house, and this causes the sheriff to make some morally questionable calls to retrieve that book at the expense of Vince and his family. That is mentioned a few times after the events of the Desert Dream and then is not shown in the flowchart of all the possible outcomes anywhere else in the story. If the developer has another couple of chapters planned to address these threads, fine, there’s just nothing to indicate that. So I have to assume that this is the ending and it’s not a good one.

As Dusk Falls has a strong start and players will find the game hard to put down for the first two chapters, like a great binge-worthy TV show. Unfortunately, its pacing issues become apparent by the end of Book 1, and it never recovers in Book 2. Those wanting to check it out for themselves should note that As Dusk Falls is a day one Xbox Game Pass game, and so anyone still curious can try it out without making a financial commitment beyond what they already pay for their subscription.

En lo que respecta a los gráficos y el sonido el resultado es mixto. No se puede negar el trabajo artístico que tiene As Dusk Falls. Pero tampoco se puede ocultar que el resultado es muchas veces extraño. Incluso hay momentos que intenta ser dramático pero los movimientos que hacen los personajes (limitadísimos) se sienten contrarios, hasta como humor involuntario. Está bien escrito y tiene la suficiente sensibilidad para mostrar con tino y ritmo mientras nos hace reflexionar una vez apagada la consola. It shows how well games can handle stories and themes like these when done with care and understanding, and how well it can pull us into the lives of others and invest us in the decisions they have to make. And that's what really stays with me about the game: stories - human stories. They are the troubled, awkward and beautiful stories I can see in the world around me, that I can relate to myself. This is a game that reflects, in many ways, our own lives. Silly as it sometimes can be, As Dusk Falls feels real, and I can't think of a higher compliment to give it.

What will haunt you is whether the thread you chose really was the best one at the time. As in life, the answer will likely be: probably not.
