Excellent graphics, many well-designed puzzles, and enjoyable gameplay contribute to an appealing game; although some sound-oriented puzzles may be difficult for hearing-impaired players.

Jules Verne's novels tend to make very good adventure games, if for no other reason than Jules Verne's love of describing people and places to his readers. Graphical adaptations of his work tend to either do very well or very poorly, though they have been tried time and again in various formats.

After having a decent time with “Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern,” I was looking forward to another adventure game by Kheops Studios. Similar to Echo, Voyage offers a truly unique story and setting. The game was based on “From Earth to Moon,” a book by Jules Verne. Unlike the original story, where the scientists never make it to the moon's surface, they do make it in the game; at least one of the scientists that is.

What do the 19th Century, the moon, drooling aliens, and a rooster have in common? They’re all part of Kheops Studio’s newest offering, Voyage: Inspired by Jules Verne. The creators of Return to Mysterious Island and The Egyptian Prophecy have created a quirky first-person point and click adventure with some surprising twists.

A funny thing happened while I was playing VOYAGE, the newest game from Kheops Studio. I had this weird thought that at some point, a long time ago, adventure games died.

Voyage: Inspired by Jules Verne is a twist on the well known Jules Verne tale, From the Earth to the Moon. As such the storybook characters of Barbicane, President of the Baltimore Gun Club, Nicholl, the armourer, and Michel Ardan, make an appearance - even if momentarily in the case of the first two. In the spirit of the novel they have been propelled moonward in an armoured space capsule, or shell, courtesy of a giant cannon.

The game adaptation draws inspiration from the book, but, ultimately, gives you the adventure that Verne's three explorers could only dream about as their shell floated past their target.

If you enjoy adventure games for the problem solving, then Voyage: Inspired by Jules Verne offers plenty of worthwhile challenges and also relaxing fun. If you are primarily interested in an engrossing plot with twists and drama, however, then this game may not be on your priority list for adventure gaming.

I will admit that this game is a change of pace for me. Most of my sci-fi gaming experiences have come in games like Doom or Half Life, where I negotiate with alien races at the end of a really big barrel. But I found myself enjoying the classic sci-fi background and slower paced action of this more traditional adventure game.

Voyage, from French developer Kheops Studio, is an adventure game inspired by the Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon. In Verne's story, which was written in 1865, three men are shot from a large cannon, but the trajectory is slightly off, and so instead of landing on the Moon, they simply circle it and then return to the Earth. In Voyage, some parts of the mission work better than in the book -- the capsule actually lands safely on the Moon, for example -- but other parts fail spectacularly, and so only one of the three men survives. That leaves it up to you to guide the lone survivor as he explores the Moon and searches for ways to survive and hopefully return to the Earth.

First things first, my knowledge of Jules Verne is limited. In fact I’ve heard the name more than I’ve read any of his writings. Shame on my part, yes I know, but life moves on. But we’re not talking about a book by Jules Verne; instead this review is about a game inspired by Jules Verne.

It's a shame that the latter portions of Journey to the Center of the Moon are so difficult, because they mar what is otherwise a terrific experience. From its unique premise, to its wonderfully atmospheric game world that should come as a breath of fresh air to those who are bored with the more well-worn adventure game settings. Unfortunately most gamers probably won't see it all due to some of the more frustrating challenges.

Voyage: Inspired by Jules Verne is a fantastical trip to the moon and back, loosely based upon the novels "From the Earth to the Moon" and "Around the Moon" by Jules Verne, which cover the same topic. The game tells the story of Michel Ardan, a quirky and fearless adventurer and explorer. Ardan concocts a daring method for 19th century man to travel to the lunar surface: build an enormous cannon and fire a massive artillery shell (containing himself and two fellow explorers) at the moon. Although I am sure the original novels upon which this game is based are quite good, if not classics of science fiction, the game falls short of its predecessors in many respects.

Kheops Studio must have a thing for Jules Verne. Voyage: A Journey Beyond Reality is the second adventure based on a classic tale by the 19th-century novelist that the developer has released in less than a year. And just like last fall's Return to Mysterious Island, Voyage takes up where Verne left off, reimagining one of the author's now-legendary sci-fi epics. Unfortunately, Voyage does it much less successfully, reducing the French author's tale of a trip to the moon in 1865 to a series of clumsily arranged logic puzzles geared to try the patience of adventure-game veterans.

Original adventure freely inspired from Jules Verne
The Good
You discover little by little an interesting story with a classic-style humor.
The graphics are rich and you have sometimes different ways to solve the puzzles.
The puzzles involves some chemistry and physics knowledge, but at a very basic level.
The Bad
Some puzzles aren't at all intuitive so you can spend a lot of time running in circles.
The Bottom Line
This Journey to the Moon is only inspired by the Jules Verne work, the story being totally different from the original novels. But the game tries to keep the feeling of a 19th-century adventure.
I liked this game, it's not very difficult compared to the Myst-like games but it's more complex than the regular point-and-click adventure game.
Some puzzles are even time-limited or asks you to perform some jumping or catching, but you can't lose lives, you simply restart the puzzle. Anyway, it's a good idea to save often as you can try other ways for solving some difficult situations. Many puzzles can be solved in different ways and that’s giving the game some replay value and a non-linear path. This is quite rare in the adventure game world.
You start into the space capsule (well, the cannon bullet imagined by Jules Verne) with your two (dead) companions. Eventually you’ll land on the moon, not after taking some difficult decisions.
From this point the story becomes totally different from what Jules Verne imagined. You'll find strange plants that will be the main objects that you'll use for surpass the challenges that will permit you to go back to the Earth.
On the Moon there are even some strange beings, that aren't very strange with the Earth's human civilization. They seem to have a very low esteem on humans and it's up to you to change that opinion.
So, the story is quite rich and the ending is surprising. The graphics are good and there aren’t major bugs. I will recommend this game to any adventure fan, especially if you can find it at a special price. It's good for kids, too. But can be very difficult for those under 10.
