Cursed to Golf’s difficulty and gameplay loop had me hooked from the first tee. The rogue-lite elements mixed with the addicting golf gameplay will have you teeing off deep into Golf Purgatory.

Cursed to Golf is a unique experience and one that was very fun to play out. The trailer sold me on the game, and after getting a chance to take it for a spin on PlayStation 5, I’m here to report that the game certainly delivers. It’s not an easy game, but it does offer a challenging but fair experience.

Not your typical golf affair, Cursed To Golf benefits from exquisite design, humorous characters and joyous visuals.

Cursed To Golf is an original take on golf with charming 16-bit characters and environments that also hide a lot of devious shenanigans beneath the surface. It’s also arguably a more accessible gateway into roguelikes, if also resulting in slower and lengthier runs, while also tricking you into playing a deckbuilder with an inventive suite of abilities to take your ball further. Whether you love or hate golf, everyone should give this a putt.

In conclusion, Cursed to Golf is not so much a golf game as a damned tough roguelike with a golfing theme. You’ll do well to beat bosses, let alone complete a full round of eighteen holes without resorting to every trick that is at your disposal. It’s bloody ace though and we look forward to many more hours of play.

Cursed to Golf is nice because while it has many roguelike elements, it doesn’t inspire the same level of anxiety to progress as other roguelikes. The game putting the choice of difficulty complete in the hands of the player is a nice touch and lets you pick your own risk and reward. Considering the golf aspect, players can easily take this game at their own pace and take advantage of one of the many paths a hole might allow. If you’ve been itching for a solid golf game with just the right amount of challenge, Cursed to Golf is for you.

Al met al is Cursed to Golf een vermakelijk game die een vermakelijk tussendoortje biedt, verwacht echter niet dat je maandenlang zoet bent met deze game.

Harder than it looks, but Cursed to Golf’s simple mechanics and clever mashing of genres make it a winner.

The game nails just about everything it sets out to do. The pixelated graphics are vibrant and varied, the writing is witty and macabre, and the music is fantastic – albeit repetitive. All aspects of the title come together harmoniously, creating an unexpectedly fun and funny roguelike with a refreshingly unique premise.

Cursed to Golf is designed to challenge you, frustrate you, and punish you – and even if real golf does that, this game takes it to a whole other level. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t usually give sports games a second glance but loves difficulty ramped up to an insane degree, this should be the one sports game you make an exception for.

Coming Soon Magazine (7 out of 10) (70%)

Much like its cursed chibi protagonist, Cursed to Golf is stuck in a sort of purgatory. Its unique mix of golf and roguelike mechanics, sublime soundtrack, and charming style ram up against its sometimes unfair difficulty and handful of questionable design decisions. This collision of relatively high highs and frustrating lows results in a game that is caught in this intermediary state between greatness and mediocrity, never committing to one side for too long yet still favoring the former. Cursed to Golf may hit a few into the bunker, but still manages to come in exactly par.

Cursed to Golf puts a unique twist on the golf formula. Combine that with a charming aesthetic, and the combination makes for a good time for the right audience. Unfortunately, it doesn't go enough into that twist and relies heavily on the game of golf to carry the day. Then making the game of golf into a rogue-like further specifies the fanbase. While a fun spin on a beloved sport, it still requires a lot of love of the sport to stick with it.

The combination of long runs, deflating feeling that came with defeat, and the list of issues I’ve mentioned throughout meant that once I finally beat the last boss, I lost any incentive to complete more runs. It doesn’t have the run/build variety or shorter playtimes I look for in a roguelike. The mix of genres is a good one, as is the game itself; I just don’t see myself playing it anymore now that it’s done.

A polished, witty mix of golf sim, platformer, and roguelike that offers sterling value for money but can’t quite overcome an increasing sense of repetition.

Cursed to Golf is ultimately still a solid game, with intuitive mechanics and a gorgeous 16-bit presentation that lends it endless charm. It’s just unfortunate that its simplicity serves to make its shortcomings all the more obvious.

Charming presentation and snappy golf action. But the roguelike structure can hinder more than help, making fresh runs more gruelling than interesting.

Nerd Stash, The N/A

Ultimately, Cursed to Golf is an enjoyable and exciting game that will deliver a level of challenge to players with a roguelike game design and basic true golf gameplay. Unfortunately, the repetitive soundtrack and roguelike elements sometimes felt like it was holding the rest of the game back. Still, polished gameplay, a gorgeous art style, and high replay value make this game an easy recommendation.
