Cursed to Golf’s difficulty and gameplay loop had me hooked from the first tee. The rogue-lite elements mixed with the addicting golf gameplay will have you teeing off deep into Golf Purgatory.

Cursed to Golf accomplishes something that many indie golf games don't - it manages to be different. Not only that, the controls are smooth, the art is clean and it all cultimates to a golf game that stands out amongst the crowd. Cursed to Golf is an indie gem through-and-through.

I was looking forward to checking out Cursed to Golf from the moment it was announced, and I’m happy to report that this is definitely one of the year’s highlights on Nintendo Switch. The gameplay is easy to get the hang of, and the roguelike elements don’t overwhelm the game experience. As you learn from your mistakes, buy more Ace Cards and store them in the card binder, you’ll start to progress further and further into the game until you can find the right combination of elements to finally ascend.

Hey Poor Player ( )

Cursed to Golf is a brilliant little golf game. Its smart design encourages creativity, and its roguelike elements, while harsh, aren’t brutal enough to derail the experience. It’s astonishing how well the individual parts from different genres mix into a cohesive whole—or should I say “hole”? More than anything, though, it’s just fun. That’s all there is to it: it’s just a fun game that deserves your attention.

NintendoWorldReport (8 out of 10)

Cursed to Golf is an extremely compelling, if also unforgiving, game. It succeeds at being an incredibly unique take on both the rogue-like and 2D golf formulas. The difficulty may be off putting to some, though, and an argument can be made that it would be better off with some adjustments made in that department. That being said, it is hard to deny the underlying quality and charm that this game exudes with every swing of the club. Cursed to Golf is a big deal for relative newcomer developer Chuhai Labs. While the studio has developed and published several titles and their lineage can be traced back through multiple companies well represented on Nintendo platforms, Cursed to Golf may very well be the game that puts them on the map.

(...) Cursed to Golf is an enjoyable affair that should appeal to players whether they have a particular love for golf or not. The general course layouts may lose their shine after a while, but the core gameplay and fun tricks you can pull off with Ace Cards ensure that the moment-to-moment action rarely lets you down. As long as you’re fine with the heavy cost of failure, you’ll likely get hours upon hours of joy from this curse.

Cursed to Golf balances harsh roguelike elements with playful and endearing level design and game mechanics. This, combined with the gorgeous art and excellent tunes make for a beautifully well-rounded package that’s hard to put down.

Nintendo Life (8 out of 10)

Cursed to Golf is an interesting and enjoyable golf game, mixing creative power-ups and roguelike game design with tried-and-true golf gameplay. Though we felt the roguelike elements held this one back a bit and the soundtrack can sometimes get irritating, the polished gameplay, appealing art style, and high replay value make this one an easy recommendation. If you’re at all a fan of golf games, we’d suggest you pick this up immediately, but even if you’re just looking to try something new, we’d encourage you to give it a shot.

It could have been longer, but as with Golf Club Wasteland it’s a fun take on the genre where you’ll have a lot of fun playing it.

Cursed to Golf is a unique rogue-like experience that’s fun to play, even IF the harsh difficulty and drawn-out levels can be frustrating.

Cursed to Golf is ultimately still a solid game, with intuitive mechanics and a gorgeous 16-bit presentation that lends it endless charm. It’s just unfortunate that its simplicity serves to make its shortcomings all the more obvious.

Cursed to Golf is a great idea for a game. It’s a very difficult 2D golf game with precise controls. Although it’s a Roguelike, I enjoyed it less like I enjoyed Hades, and more like I enjoyed Super Meat Boy. I just can’t believe there are no multiplayer options! And there are some bugs that need fixing. Playing Cursed to Golf was great fun for a few hours, but as a single-player-only experience, I’m not sure how many players will be captivated long enough to try to conquer all 18 holes.

Combined with just how long it takes to come back after you’re kicked back to hole one, the problems with Cursed to Golf snowball to a point where how good its central idea is ceases to matter. At its worst, the game is truly infuriating in its disrespect for the player’s time.

If you’re looking for a fresh new roguelike with that challenge then Cursed to Golf will keep you busy for many gaming nights to come. Not a hole in one but far from a boogey.

Real Otaku Gamer N/A

If you’re a golf fanatic and you like quirky indie games, Cursed to Golf might be the game for you. The visuals are solid, the gameplay is overall well-designed, and even the music is rather catchy. But starting over at the very beginning with no real changes in your abilities is a real drag that will turn off a fair number of players. Temper your expectations and remember that this cutesy golf game conceals a remarkably challenging game that will test both your golf skills and your patience. If you’re still in for a shot, go for it. There’s a great game hiding here behind a few questionable gameplay decisions and hopefully some players really enjoy themselves!

Ultimately, Cursed to Golf is an enjoyable and exciting game that will deliver a level of challenge to players with a roguelike game design and basic true golf gameplay. Unfortunately, the repetitive soundtrack and roguelike elements sometimes felt like it was holding the rest of the game back. Still, polished gameplay, a gorgeous art style, and high replay value make this game an easy recommendation.

The cute-looking and sounding package is a lot tougher than you might think, so be prepared. But if rogue-likes (or as the devs call it… Golf Like) interest you, give this one a swing. Cursed to Golf is trying to do something new in a genre that can feel overwhelming at times, and it succeeds. It’s challenging, charming, funny, and just overall a blast to play.
