The first Fifa on the Mega Drive billed itself as an authentic experience of real sport, real drama, real spectacle. It wasn’t then, but perhaps, in this final iteration … it is now.

So is it worth it this year? That's a firm "yes". The Hypermotion 2 engine lives up to its hype and delivers what it probably the best simulation of football I've seen. You have a variety of game modes to find your favorites with some like Volta that deliberately speed up the pace that the engine tends to slow down in Career. You also have the widest variety of stars to choose from featuring men's and women's teams as well as all the licenses and real player likenesses you can hope for. However, Career mode needs some love. And by love I don't mean more meaningless transfer cutscenes. I mean depth beyond just the UK pyramid: add some real lower division teams across leagues and stop neglecting everything outside of Europe.

One is the age-old FUT issue of pack transparency: the odds of unearthing Mbappe, Son, or Benzema (top dog on the FIFA 23 ratings list) are still deliberately obfuscated. Those pay-to-win catcalls are going nowhere. Additionally, there remain too many moments of manufactured drama, in which player control feels sabotaged. Be it Squad Battles where trailing teams turn into 1970 Brazil, online matches where the leading team suddenly can't pass water, or an overabundance of 90th minute goals – not least that Werner sickener. Still, FIFA 23 sees the series bow out on a high, and provides encouraging signs for the debut of EA Sports FC this time next year.

The compelling intensity can’t help but make me think of all the stories of people overplaying and overspending on player packs. Although some lip-service is paid to making people break up their purchases by requiring different button inputs in the store, you have to think if there isn’t a genuinely addictive element to it, why does it need these checks and balances? But keeping things on the pitch, FIFA 23 is still utterly engrossing, wildly frustrating, uncannily realistic and very silly. It’s endlessly playable but, just like real football, the search for the perfect blueprint goes on.
