Description

2006 FIFA World Cup is a football quiz game for one or two players. The quiz is played as a football match and starts with the player(s) selecting from one of ten national teams. Each match s played in a virtual stadium where the pitch is divided into ten zones. Players pass the ball from one player to the next by answering questions, easy questions are asked when the player passes within the same zone or moving forward one zone, harder questions are asked for a two zone pass and difficult questions are asked for a three zone pass. In each turn there are always four passing options available, two nearby, one that's two zones away and another that's three zones away. The same game mechanic is used for shooting at goal, the further away from the goal the player is when they decide to shoot harder the question that is asked.

All questions are multiple choice with three possible answers, questions are all related to previous World Cups and include video clips followed by '"What happened next?"; identifying players from pixelated photos; showing pictures of two players and asking when they played together/against each other; spot the ball questions; and asking the scores of previous matches. During the game player(s) have one red card, you yellow cards and three substitution cards to play. The red card is played from the virtual pitch, when played a question is asked and if answered correctly then that player gains possession of the ball. The remaining cards are played from the question screen, the yellow card removes one of the multiple choice answers and the substitution card swaps the current question for a new one.

The game has three game modes which vary slightly depending on whether they are being played as a one or two player game ;
  • FIFA World Cup Tournament: This mode starts at the World Cup Quarter Finals and to win the player must triumph in their quarter, semi and final match
  • FIFA World Cup Final: This is a single game
  • Penalty Shoot Out: This is also a one or two player game.
    In the single player game the player is asked five questions and they play as both attacker and goal keeper. If they answer a question correctly they get the chance to make a save by answering another question, they must score a goal and save a goal to win.
    In the two player game players take turns answering five questions - each correct answer scores a goal.
    There is a Sudden Death round which occurs if no goals are scored in single player mode or if there's a tie in the two player mode
In the single player game the match always starts with the human player in possession at the kick off and the game passes the ball back to a defender. The player answers questions until they either score a goal or get a question wrong at which point control passes to the AI opponent. This plays just the same as the human player, i.e. It signals which pass it intends to make and the player is asked a question whose difficulty is dependant upon the pass being made, here short passes generate hard questions and long passes easy ones. If the player fails to intercept the pass then the AI opponent makes another pass until either a goal is scored or the player manages to save/intercept.

In a two player game there's a virtual coin toss to decide who plays first. Another difference in the two player game is the mechanic of scoring a goal, if the attacking player answers their question correctly then they have a shot on target and the defending player must answer a question to decide whether they make a save. The difficulty of the 'save question' is the reverse of the mechanic of passing, here shots taken three zones away from goal are easier to save while shots taken from in front of the goal are saved by answering a difficult question. If the game is tied when full time is reached then there's a Sudden Death round in which the first goal wins the match.

The game also has a tutorial section in which the presenter explains the game mechanics, the presenter is not seen on-screen and the tutorial is not interactive. If left to it's own devices at the main menu the game will eventually display the game's credits.
