Mac Ledge (9 out of 10)

Afterlife is highly recommended for gamers who like strategic sims and for those who enjoy a humorous fantasy. It's challenging enough to keep your interest and so easy to learn that you can get right into it without a lot of tedious trial and error. (Hey, I know nobody reads the manuals until they're really stuck!) Speaking of manuals, Afterlife ships with a good one--plenty of explanations without excess verbage. Warning: pun monitor is non-functional. All and all, this is a hell of a game.

Macworld (8.2 out of 10)

You'll want to pay attention to the tutorial before you play, and listen to your online helpers (demonic Jason and angelic Aria) once you get going, because Afterlife is easily as complex as Dante's trilogy. There are all sorts of complications such as Karma Structures, Fate Populations, and Belief Graphs. In fact, this thing gets downright liturgical at times. But a refreshingly heretical sense of humor keeps things upbeat, down to the monastic soundtrack and the Boschian graphics.

Computer Gaming World (CGW) ( )

In the end (grin), if you like this sort of simulation in general, you will probably have a great time in the afterlife. If SIMCITY put you to sleep, the humor of AFTERLIFE might keep you awake for a little while. And when you're not busy laughing, you'll have a great time playing Demiurge and doling out rewards and punishments in the afterlife.

All Game Guide ( )

While the game requirements are a bit different from most simulations, a wonderful sense of humor leaves you holding your sides as you consider the punishments and rewards for the realms you build. However, at its core, Afterlife has much in common with other simulation games, including similar goals (success and profit). One note of warning, however. If you feel strongly about the beliefs in heaven and hell as depicted on the planet Earth, this may not be the game for you.

Retro Archives (13 out of 20)
