Sure, the graphics may be the same 'Candy Land dollhouse' motif, and the sound is limited by the DS's tiny speakers (although a surround option might help you pinpoint that pesky mole cricket), and the game still has no real goal, but none of that matters. What matters is that the child-like sense of exploration, discovery, wonder, and fun is the same as well, and now it's easier than ever to share it with others who feel the same way.

The success of Animal Crossing: Wild World is based on two reasons: Nintendo did not drastically change the game from its Gamecube predecessor, appealing to the legions of fans that devote their time to it. Secondly, the online multiplayer provides for limitless possibilities for handheld gaming, allowing its participants to access a miniature world where individual style and interactivity reign supreme. Animal Crossing: Wild World is not merely a handheld version of an excellent console game, but an improvement as well. If there is one defining game for a DS owner to have in their collection, itâs this game. Though the real world canât be avoided, the world of Animal Crossing is far more appealing.

The days spent in the world of Animal Crossing should be refreshing since children have the opportunity to be an artist, naturalist, therapist, home designer, and anthropologist. As long as they invite friends over, this game should be appealing for a long time.

Animal Crossing: Wild World is an absolutely essential purchase for every DS owner, and I defy anyone to play it for a week and not to become completely and utterly addicted to it. You can forget the raw power of the PSP; if Nintendo keep releasing games of such quality and imagination, they're never going to be knocked from the top handheld spot.

At its core, Animal Crossing: Wild World has not strayed far from the gameplay conventions that made the original such a critically-acclaimed hit. The fact that now your Animal Crossing town can go anywhere with you makes this one a no-brainer for purchase by anyone who loved the GameCube original. It would get an "A" score from me if portability was the only new thing in the game. The addition of WiFi support adds immensely to the game and should have the Animal Crossing faithful exchanging codes and visiting friends all over the world. The only problem now is to know when to stop playing. Animal Crossing tends to take over your imagination and you start wondering what is happening in your town at all hours of the day and night, because life never stops in Animal Crossing. Be warned, it can become an obsession.

In the end, paired with Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World is probably the best thing Nintendo could have launched Wi-Fi Connection with, as the two games provide entirely different experiences. Mario Kart gives players a chance to drive fast and compete viciously, while Animal Crossing provides a place to hang out, tell jokes, and go fishing. The depth and polish in Animal Crossing doesn't hurt either.

Animal Crossing: Wild World is an amazing gaming experience. It has something for everyone: fishing, bug hunting, philanthropy (i.e. donating fossils to the museum), epistolatory madness, costume design, music composition, empire building and much more. This is the type of game you can play for fifteen minutes a day and walk away with a satisfying gaming experience. Plus, it is one of the pioneer titles for the new Nintendo wi-fi network, so you can quite literally play with friends all over the wide world. Animal Crossing: Wild World is a must-have title for any DS owner, and is not a half-bad reason to buy a DS if you donât already have one.

Not only that, but the simple fact that itâs a handheld game is an advantage - simply because of being able to pick-up-and-play the game, itâs far more accessible than Animal Crossing was. Animal Crossing: Wild World is definitely a different style of game than most in the market. With no big battles, mesmerizing graphics, or frustrating challenges, Animal Crossing plummets the player into a new, relaxed world, where your only concerns are to meet the animals, find all species of fish and bugs, excavate ancient fossils, and of course, pay your seemingly endless mortgage to Tom Nook. Again, Animal Crossing: Wild World is not for everyone, but is an experience everyone should try at least once.

If any of this sounds even remotely interesting to you, go buy Animal Crossing: Wild World immediately. It's an absolutely fantastic title for the DS, and the online aspects make it far superior to the Gamecube version. If you're more of a traditional gamer, and this just sounds bizarre to you (which is understandable), you might be better off staying away. And would you really want Nintendo to have changed something that was so finely judged in the first place? Will it last you the next 30 years? Probably not. Will it make you very, very happy? We'll let Twingo answer that: "Zoooooot!"

It's not perfect, of course, as, for example, you can't leave messages for offline friends, or make your own patterns in someone else's village (a safety protocol against online undesirables, we imagine). Nevertheless, Animal Crossing appears to have found its natural home on the DS as you can now pick it up and play it whenever you like - you're not restricted to your living room anymore. Familiar it may be, but Animal Crossing is still an experience unlike any other.

The most recent example would have to be Animal Crossing: Wild World, a sequel to the wildly strange and popular life sim that addicted GameCubers four years ago.

Living in Snickerd isn't problem-free, but it's a lot of fun. The best part about it is that there's something new going on every day, whether it's a new neighbor moving in, a nasty snowstorm on the horizon, or a holiday party at City Hall. Since time in Snickerd moves at the same pace as time everywhere else, I can walk around at day, watering my flowers in the sunlight, or sneak around at night and see what my neighbors are up to when they think I'm not looking. It's a wild world out here-- maybe you should try getting a town of your own. It's sure to keep you occupied for a long time.

It's almost impossible to write a review without descending into anecdote, because Animal Crossing is one of those titles that immediately lends itself to "a funny thing happened to me on the way to Nook 'n' Go..." style reveries, and I've tried to avoid it because that doesn't really tell anyone what it's actually like to play. In fact, that's probably an impossible task. As I stated at the beginning of the review, Animal Crossing is less of a game than a way of life; and life is something you have to experience for yourself, rather than have it described to you vicariously. So you're going to have to trust me and take a leap of faith when I say that Animal Crossing is one of the great videogame experiences; even if it's not truly a game. That may not sound like a ringing endorsement either, but once you play it, I think you'll find that it is...

More impressively, even when you think you've finally taken all the Animal Crossing you possibly can, all it takes is for another mate to pick up the game and you'll be sucked in all over again as more items squeak tantalisingly from the recesses of their cart. Sure, it's not all perfect - there's still only a finite number of things to do in a day and the upper screen doesn't serve much purpose beyond a dedicated place to put sky - but you'll be so powerless to abandon Wild World's idyllic charms, you really won't care. Great stuff.

I'm not going to go into any further depth about Animal Crossing itself, anyone thinking about buying it probably already knows the concept, or has played it on another console, and those of you who don't can easily find information from a source far more versed in the world of Animal Crossing than myself. To conclude I will stress that Animal Crossing isn't for everyone, but the Nintendo DS realisation of the game is absolutely brilliant, but not - I might add - without its flaws, most of which are thankfully forgivable. While the GameCube version could only be played at home, the DS version can go with you wherever you go, so you wonât miss out on anything happening in town during the day. The online features that the GameCube version was sorely lacking add a whole new dimension to an already groundbreaking game, and makes you think that this what the creators of the game had in mind when they first brought out Animal Forest for the Nintendo 64 five years ago.

Even with the disappointments of online play and the lack of NES games, Animal Crossing: Wild World retains enough charm from the original and innovations of its own just enough for me to suggest its purchase. It's a cute game that families will love; up to four characters are allowed in your village on one cartridge, enough for a family of four. They even pay off the same mortgage, living in the same house. It's a difficult task to convince someone, simply by describing what's involved, that Animal Crossing: Wild World is an enormously fun and engaging game experience. I mean, much of the focus is turning menial, real life tasks like housecleaning, landscaping, and scavenging, into gameplay elements that, when combined, make the design come together. What it does, and in turn where it excels, is give the players a really excellent sense of accomplishment and personal expression, and the Nintendo DS does more or less everything that the GameCube version did, with the added incentive of going online and opening up their pride and joy for everyone else to enjoy.

Nintendo has made its reputation by creating fun, offbeat, family-friendly gaming experiences that are often considered innovative. But even the most stalwart Nintendo fans had to be a little confused the first time they got a look at Animal Crossing. The very definition of a nongame, Animal Crossing for the GameCube took gentle sprinklings of the role-playing and life-simulation genres and put them into a capriciously adorable world filled with cartoon animals--one that you would have to live and survive in by performing what would normally look like menial labor tasks. But as uneventful as it sounds on paper, Animal Crossing was easily one of the most inexplicably fetching gaming experiences to be had on the GameCube, and it was near impossible not to be taken in by the charms of its precocious animal residents and habitual collecting mechanics. Now, Nintendo has brought the insidiously addictive world of Animal Crossing to the DS in the form of Animal Crossing: Wild World.

As I have stated, Animal Crossing is what you make of it. You may find it a thoroughly enjoyable game that will lasts you for months to come (and believe me, there are many people who do so), or you may find yourself a jaded critic. There's really only one way to find out. ACWW is truly a unique game that everyone should try at least once.

Animal Crossing: Wild World may not be the revamped game with hundreds of new items, characters and collectables that we would have so dearly loved to see, but it is as oddly addictive and entirely charming as it was before. With the addition of the online features, it's unlikely that any Animal Crossing fan will be able to hold themselves back from purchasing this game. Hopefully, its format will introduce it to hundreds of new players too.

Ultimately the Nintendo DS presents the perfect platform for Animal Crossing; it may be a little too similar to its GameCube predecessor, but being on a handheld and supporting Wi-Fi more then makes up for any such complaints.

If you have never, ever played Animal Crossing in any form before, I can't hesitate to recommend it. 10 out of 10, all the platitudes possible. If however, you have, and you feel that you saw all it had to offer, I wouldn't give up on this game entirely. It's still worth a second look. 6 out of 10. Tell you what, let's split the difference.

So, how can a game with no end, no real missions and a bunch of insane forest creatures be so good? I really don't know. But for some reason, I can't help but love Animal Crossing Wild World. It looks good, plays great and is a blast to hang out with friends in each other's towns. If you own a DS, you really need to get this game, even if you don't like the concept. But when you are still playing it months later, trying to get that last house upgrade, or that last rare fossil, be sure to thank me.

The central pillar of Animal Crossing: Wild World is imagination. The game has been crafted carefully enough so that rewards for immersing yourself are immediately apparent. We've all heard of sandbox games, but Wild World builds that sandbox all in your head. It's your responsibility as a player to embrace it. The gameplay and tools are all there, you just decide how to use them. There's enough crammed into Animal Crossing: Wild World for everyone to find something they like, whether they be a social simulation junkie or just looking for something new.

I quickly got addicted to the original Animal Crossing on the GameCube. I used to sequester myself in the t.v. room to collect seashells, go fishing and pay off my huge loans from Tom Nook. I even set my clock to wake up early Sunday mornings so I could buy turnips from Sow Joan. After awhile the disconnect between time spent in AC and time spent with real friends just got to be too weird. If Animal Crossing were alcohol, I'd be one of those people who took furtive swigs from a bottle and wondered if I should start attending some sort of meeting.

One of the biggest selling points of Wild World is its WiFi support, but the multiplayer element is not as well integrated when compared to titles like Mario Kart DS. For starters, there is no online lobby, making it difficult to connect with new people. Instead, players must jot down friend codes, and even then, there isnât much to do thatâs different from the main game. While itâs nice to finally see up to three other people in your town, itâs a shame more multiplayer-specific tasks werenât included. Another disappointment is the absence of NES games from the GameCube version, which offered an added incentive to keep playing and collecting. While none of these issues hold the game back from a playability standpoint, Wild World is closer to an enhanced port than an extravagant sequel.

Although this game is not a sequel to the Gamecube original, I do think that players of the original will have a blast with this. Animal Crossing: Wild World is a fine example of a time consuming game. This massive game can be very addicting at times and is a great way to escape reality. Freedom is the keyword to define Wild Word, for there are no main objectives or tasks to do. Basically, you will have fun the way Nintendo wants you to.

After three years, a major hardware shift and a hungry audience, Animal Crossing: Wild World doesn't add anything new to the great original formula. Inasmuch as Animal Crossing is designed to be a "non-game," Wild World is definitely a "non-update." It works well as a handheld, but considering its funky new digs, this animal strays far from the wild side.

It's tough to assign a score to a game that, for all intents and purposes, is uniquely different for everyone who plays it. Whilst luck and careful timing can fill your town with health, wealth and good company, you could just as easily be left with a miserable, cluttered and dreary canvas to work with. Ultimately though, Animal Crossing: Wild World is what you make of it; it reflects your own creativity and imagination. Which is why Gamestyle is resorting to assigning the least imaginative score it could think of, and letting YOU creatively decide for yourself.

The game starts out with you in a taxi, driving to a town you've named. Once you arrive at your house in your named town, a raccoon by the name of Tom Nook comes and assists you in adjusting to your new home; he gives you a job to help you pay off your mortgage. While you're not working, you can make money by harvesting pears from the trees, fishing, catching bugs, digging up fossils, and gardening. As time progresses, you will learn their hobbies and play with them. You can also play with your friends via wireless LAN or Nintendo WiFi.

Still, most Crossing fans won't mind the clunky interface or the lack of other upgrades because there's so much inherent charm seeping through the DS' screens and speakers. Judging by its instant and enduring popularity, hardly anyone else cares what a rehash it is. Fire this one up and prepare to ignore that boring everyday chore we call real life.

All the fun on the go
by Stephen Lambert (4)
The Good
This game follows in the footsteps of Animal Crossing for the Gamecube, except it's portable! All the fun you had in the first game follows you around on your DS. Trading bugs, items, making money by selling, and now the addition of Wifi for your friends to come visit your town make this title a "must have" for the Nintendo DS. The stylus increases playability and eliminate the "clunky" button pressing of the first game.
The Bad
The NES games DO NOT appear in this title! And holidays have been reduced to generic offshoots of their more appropriate brethren to prevent offending others who do not share the same type of holidays. Graphics are the same as the console titles (no improvements), so those that were looking for a graphic enhancement will be disappointed.
The Bottom Line
This game is a great simulation and open-ended "sandbox" for you to play in day after day. The best part is it's portable, allowing you to easily check up on your village buddies from time to time without having to wait to rush home. If you like titles that have no real "ending", then this game is for you. Recommended for all age groups.

Uhh....What's this game supposed to be about?
by ZenicReverie (2133)
The Good
So, creating your own designs to go on clothes, hats, umbrellas, walls, and floors is interesting. Being able to visit other people's towns would be interesting if there was anything to actually do. Creating constellations has many many possibilities. Collecting items and being able to show them off is usually fun.
The Bad
But, these things still don't make a good game experience. The whole purpose of the game seems to be to complete collections, for no reason at all. I say no reason because completing the collections doesn't really get you anything to help you out in the game. Also, you're working to pay off a debt on the house you're given. Once you pay off the debt... well you can get a bigger house to put more junk, and incur a bigger debt as well.
There're no fun mini-games to break up the monotony of it all. Just collect stuff to either put in the museum, your house, or sell so you can finish collections, have pointless junk around the house, or make money so you can pay off your debt to have a bigger house. I guess money can also be used to create designs or wasted on fortunetellers that tell you nothing.
The events are pointless too. While they sound interesting, like flower contests, flea markets, and room decoration contests they are boiled down to basically how many flowers do you have around your house, I can buy things for cheap while selling my stuff for more than at the store, and how much junk do I have in my house? It was a little fun to remove everyone else's flowers in the middle of the night and place them all around my house, but no one seemed to remember that they had flowers the next day, so any sort of expected reaction like "Where the heck did all my flowers go?" were sadly absent.
One last pointless activity I'll mention before getting back to the overall experience of the game is letter writing. About the only thing this gives you is collecting different kind of paper to write on when getting generic often empty letters from the AI to the effect of "Thanks for your letter and present, you're the coolest. Here's something from me." in response to my letter of "Attached is a red rose from your flower bed. If you want the rest, send money!"
The controls can be clunky, resulting in unexpected game play that you would like to go back to a previous save point to avoid. This results in a visit from a mole man that explains you should never play this game like that because it's not like other games. Getting scolded at for trying to reverse a gameplay error is just not encouraging. The error you ask? While having a watering can I tapped on some new grass, hoping to water it, which is supposed to be the default action in this case. But, I instead rip it out of the ground forever destroying it. This other similar control issues negatively affected my experience.
The Bottom Line
An exercise in meaningless socially meaningful actions. If you're looking for a game that can be played with friends for a long time to come, don't buy this game. However, it does have some redeeming value somewhere. I really didn't give the title a chance and ended up traveling through time in the game, it's real time even when it's off, and changing the clock on the DS will actually cause the entire town to change. About the most interesting thing there is to do is to see what your town would look like in 50 years without you being there.
