The joystick has a good feel, and keyboard commands are easy to learn. The manual offers some combat tips and ticks to get you going. There are some nice little bits of detail involved like choosing crew members, "Taps" for downed pilots, and parachuting out of downed planes. Not bad.

Snowstrike is simple, straightforward aerial combat, and something of a relief in these days of stupidly complex flight simulators. It's entertaining and not much of a strain on the old grey cells. And remember - just say, 'No' (to drugs, anyway).

For all its options (including a variety of skill levels and weather conditions), this is just another standard flying game: the graphics aren't detailed enough to keep you enthralled, the sound effects are limited, and the missions aren't really varied enough to have you coming back for more.

64'er (4 out of 10) (40%)

Der Simulationsanstrich ist auf Dauer etwas dünn. Snowstrike ist eher ein clever dargereichtes Flugzeug-Actionspiel mit ausreichend schneller, aber sehr schlichter 3D-Grafik. Auch wenn die Beschreibungen der Missionen variieren, bleibt der Spielablauf recht ähnlich. Und gegnerische Raketen abzuwehren und feindliche Sprites abzuknallen, kann auf Dauer etwas ermüdend sein. Nur wer nicht mehr als eine durchschnittliche Luftballerei erwartet, wird mit dem Programm leidlich zufrieden sein.

Noch schlimmer trifft es allerdings die C-64-User. Aufgrund des „wahnwitzigen“ Spieltempos (Gäähn!) mag einfach keinerlei Spielfreude aufkommen, zumal es in technischen Belangen ebenfalls nicht gut um Snowstrike bestellt ist. Kurzum: Hoffen wir nur, daß Epyx in Zukunft wieder an alte Traditionen anknüpft.

You could say Snowstrike is like one of those ancient C64 arcade flight sims, only none of them were quite this bad. Flying toward enemy targets is incredibly tedious with constant harassment from fighters. Dealing with them isn't particularly difficult, but it wastes time, fuel and patience - particularly irritating is how the radar automatically switches from displaying the ground targets to air-to-air mode, showing only aircraft. Another problem is the having to fly low for surveillance scans; with no ground detail it's all too easy to hit the deck. On the Amiga this is all a bit of the joke. The C64 version isn't quite so technically unimpressive, but gameplay is no less limited and the five-year-old Skyfox is much better (although I wouldn't rate that too highly either!).

Power Play (29 out of 100) (29%)

Früher war Epyx ein Garant für originelle, spannende Programme. Heutzutage bringen die Kalifornier nach längerer Computerspielpause nicht mehr zustande als eine solche mickrige Pseudosimulation. Ihr dürft zwar hier und da eine Taste drücken, um den Waffentyp zu wählen oder das Fahrwerk einzuziehen; im wesentlichen ist Snowstrike aber eine öde "Ich-krieg-dich-vor-mein-Fadenkreuz"-Knallerei mit allenfalls dezenten Simulationsspuren. Die 3D-Grafik ist relativ schnell, aber schmerzhaft schlicht. Spätestens nach einer halben Stunde wird Snowstrike enorm langweilig: Absturz in spielerische Tiefflugregionen.

Snow Strike is not only topical - it's a quality game. A responsive jet simulation, plenty of satisfying targets, and enough enemy firepower to keep you well and truly on the hop add up to a satisfying package with long term appeal.
