Great Battles of Hannibal is an excellent game, the port from board game to computer game has been done remarkably well. It's obvious that time was spent to improve the animation within the engine without sacrificing anything because of it. This is a fine addition to any wargamer's chest. Next up is Great Battles of Caesar, and by the time it's over we will have an excellent collection of related games. Bottom Line: An excellent, addictive wargame - the second in the great battles series. Animation has been improved, and features eleven battles. I would still have preferred to have seen more battles included. Excellent gameplay, a great addition to any wargame fan's collection.

Great Battles of Hannibal can be one of the most entertaining games with a group of people to represent each of one side's leaders. All of you can share plans and work in a more efficient manner than a single player can, but as a single-player game played by yourself, Hannibal fails to shine. The Great Battles series shares a lot in common with the classic board games such as Risk and Axis & Allies. If you like those, a good chance exists that you will enjoy games of this series as well. I liked the historic/educational undertones to this game, and you can actually learn quite a bit about the period and how war was fought -- more than you would with the older board games. Overall, Great Battles of Hannibal wasn't really great, but it wasn't really bad either.

Like Alexander, you will discover that Great Battles of Hannibal is a sophisticated, albeit complex, computer wargame - a handsomely designed gaming system that integrates a suite of thoughtfully crafted and eminently challenging features throughout every facet of play. Daunting even for veteran wargamers to readily assimilate, the game mechanics eventually and delightfully fall into place with repeated play. Dedicated gamers will ultimately come to appreciate and embrace Great Battles of Hannibal as one of the most entertaining yet historically accurate wargames ever devised. And, if nothing else, Great Battles of Hannibal provides a poignant look at warfare in the Age of Antiquity, teaching you - in frightfully appalling detail - the rigors of combat both man and beast were made to endure.

As far as turn-based strategy games go, this title is good, but not great (no pun intended). Those who enjoyed the board version of the Great Battles series will find Great Battles of Hannibal to be another fine title in its conversion to the PC format. The interface and gameplay are clean enough to allow serious gamers to find a good strategic challenge and some solid entertainment. This is a title that will appeal to a small but loyal niche in the strategy game market. So, for those of you who liked the first title, this is more of the same with some needed improvements. For those who aren’t sure or are curious as to what combat was like so many years ago, then give the demo a try and see what you think. It’s certainly not for everyone, but those who enjoy this type of strategic challenge will find Great Battles of Hannibal is up to the task.

Auch wenn sich nicht jeder gleichermaßen für so ein altertümliches Szenario in angeblich trockener Runden spielweise begeistern kann, Hannibal ist ein Spiel, das über längere Zeit hinweg fesseln kann. Durch die Animation des unmittelbaren Kampfgeschehens — man sieht, wie die Kämpfer aufeinander einschlagen — wird viel Atmosphäre erzeugt. Die relativ geringen Auswahlmöglichkeiten und die völlig fehlende Resourcenverwaltung machen auch für den Anfänger einen problemlosen Einstieg möglich, gehen aber auf Kosten der Spieltiefe und der Wiederholbarkeit. Die Schlachten aus den beiden römisch-karthagischen Kriegen sind relativ originalgetreu dargestellt und vermitteln einen guten Eindruck des damaligen Kriegshandwerks. Der Politikmodus ist ebenfalls recht simpel ausgefallen, Ihr könnt entweder gleich in die Schlacht ziehen oder erst noch lieber den Aufruhr gegen Rom schüren. Hannibal ist also eher ein gemütliches Strategiespiel für Einsteiger, Historienliebhaber und Lateinschüler.

Licht und Schatten halten sich bei Hannibal ziemlich die Waage. Geschichtlich interessierte Militärstrategen kommen in den Genuß von Taktiken, wie sie originalgetreu in den antiken Feldschlachten eingesetzt wurden. Aber genau diese - an sich lobenswerte - historische Detailverliebtheit führt eben auch zu einem etwas stereotypen Spielverlauf.

Genau wie beim großen Alex gibt es bloß im schick bebilderten Intro Sprachausgabe, ist die in drei Stufen zoombare Grafik bieder animiert und der Sound aus Musik und Effekten nur mittelmäßig. Und genau wie dort machen die stets vorgegebenen Grundaufstellungen der Armeen das via Online-Hilfen erlernbare Spiel etwas abwechslungsarm. Wem das wegen seiner historischen Genauigkeit egal ist, der darf sich schon jetzt auf den Abschluß der Serientrilogie freuen: In wenigen Monaten zieht „Julius Caesar“ am PC in den Gallischen Krieg.

Hannibal ist genau das Richtige, wenn Sie den amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg oder die Ostfront nicht mehr sehen können. Auf Hannibals Spuren gegen das römische Imperium anzutreten, ist mal eine erfrischende Alternative. Allerdings wurde das größte Manko, die schwer verständliche Zugbeschränkung durch die Feldherren, leider nicht behoben. Für Genrefans und Elefantenfreunde aber durchaus zu empfehlen.

In de kern is Great Battles of Hannibal identiek aan die van Alexander. Enkel de datums, namen en nog wat andere details zijn veranderd. En Interactive Magic beschouwt dit dan als een volledig nieuw spel dat dan ook aan de volledige prijs verkocht wordt. Dit terwijl het dus eigenlijk gewoon om een datadisk gaat. En dan moeten de veldslagen van Caesar nog komen.

However, as an overall experience, HANNIBAL does the great leader a disservice, because of so many aspects of the game simply aren't finished. The unimaginative campaign game does little more then string battles together in historical order. The slow game engine takes much of the fun from multiplay, and the number of crashes are unforgivable in the second iteration of a series. Period enthusiasts will find historical insight and some challenges, but be warned that in many ways, HANNIBAL marks a step back from ALEX. I hope that Erudite and I-Magic will fix these problems by the time JULIUS CAESAR ships.

Muzyka i wymyślna grafika dla takich gier nie są integralną ich częścią, a tylko wypełniaczem. W nielicznych tylko wypadkach oprawa jest kolejnym elementem potwierdzającym klasę produktu. W przypadku GBH nie powala na kolana ani obraz, ani dźwięk... co też pasuje do klasy gry.
