I honestly do not know how I could keep going on about this game. If you’re a Tetris fan and own a DS, buy this game immediately. The online mode and push modes make this game worthwhile by themselves and of course, the standard Tetris mode is as intense as ever. However, some people will be put off by the ability to infinitely spin pieces. Even so, I’m sure those people will still find enjoyment in some modes that this game offered.

Aside from some small problems, I had with rotating blocks in Touch mode, it's a well-designed and executed game from top to bottom. I can't think of a better way to kill a long plane ride, and I expect lapsed Tetris fans who've migrated to other puzzle games will be making their way back into the fold after playing this excellent reinvention of one of gaming's greatest titles.

Tetris has been a long time coming to the DS. After a legal battle between THQ and The Tetris Company squashed THQ’s plans to create a DS version of Tetris, Nintendo swept in to pick up the pieces. And with their expansive Tetris know-how (they did create the ultimate version of Tetris, Tetris for the Game Boy, after all) they’ve created Tetris for a new generation.

While there is a lot more stuff crammed in the card, Nintendo left the core game intact and just as fun as ever. And since Nintendo had the good sense not to mess with the heart of the game, Tetris is in no danger of losing its crown as the king of kinetic-puzzle games on the DS either.

With six different modes of play and plenty of multiplayer options the replay value of Tetris DS is through the roof. The game exudes a nostalgic charm by including many of Nintendo?s 8-bit characters into the design. The music is equally entertaining with remixes from the classic games as well. It?s been many years since a really good Tetris game has come out, but luckily the drought is over. Fans of Tetris and newcomers alike, Tetris DS will satisfy any puzzle itch you may have.

Overall, Tetris DS is a damn fun package. Nintendo has created yet another excellent version of Tetris. The themed levels are fun, the new game modes add a lot to an already complete franchise and the Multiplayer Mode is one of the best I've ever seen in a puzzle game. Tetris has always been one of those games that has mystified gamers with its simple approach, and now with Tetris DS, that simple approach has been fused with innovative gameplay to create a classic that even modern gamers can enjoy. While it does not take long to scour through all of the gameplay modes, Tetris still stands strong with it replay value. In every challenge, the pressing need to improve the high score makes for great replay incentive, as does the game’s simple yet sweet multiplayer and Wi-Fi game modes. True, not every gamer will appreciate Tetris DS’s full array of possibilities. There are many types of gamers out there, and only a certain group will be able to love this game’s simplicity and brilliance. But, if you are willing to give it a chance, you might find more enjoyment than you may realize.

The game has continually changed itself to different times. When multiplayer games became larger, so did Tetris’s multiplayer. Once the internet became a haven for gaming with strangers someone coded Tetrinet, which was a free version of Tetris that let you play with people online. Tetrinet and other multiplayer games lead to the Nintendo DS version which supported online games as well as local area games with up to eight people. Not only did the game grow with multiplayer support, but the addition of items to either harm your opponents or help yourself just added to the already addictive mix.

It's really amazing to see that Tetris still has legs nearly 20 years after its creation. This puzzle design not only kickstarted the "falling piece" genre, but even after countless times of trying to out do Tetris, no one's really been able to topple the king. As long as there are videogame systems, Tetris will be there to play. The latest rendition could be the design's best outing yet: Tetris DS might change a few things to the game that many of us grew up on, but it's still Tetris. And it rocks.

How many other games with a 30 dollar price tag can you say you'll be playing for another 20 years?

By far, the best feature is online play. You can do one-on-one or go against 3 other people. In the 4-person game, you can use Mario Kart-esque items, which really make it fast-paced and fun. I've yet to experience a single problem connecting or finding opponents, and this great mode ensures a huge amount of replayability. This should be in every DS owner's library.

Truthfully, though, those few complaints hardly take away from the fact that Tetris rules. It is, after all, the game that inspired countless "falling block" puzzle games. Although a rare few were able to match (and arguably surpass) Tetris in terms of gameplay (Tetris Attack/Puzzle League, Super Puzzle Fighter), most fell way short (does anyone remember Hatris or Facetris?). Still, even the best falling block games lacked the simple charm of the original. Tetris DS does a remarkable job of reminding us why Tetris was so great in the first place, and it gives us tons of extra reasons to love it as well. I have to admit, though, I kinda miss playing it on that pea soup green screen.

Der Grund dafür liegt allerdings nicht unbedingt in der Auffrischung der alten Spielmodi, sondern in den neu dazugekommenen Spielmodi Puzzle und Touch und einem glänzenden Mehrspielermodus. Trotzdem reicht es meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz zur Eroberung des Genrethrons, was sowohl an der grafischen Präsentation als auch an der starken Konkurrenz (z.B. Lumines/PSP) liegen mag.

Embrace Nintendo’s additions however, and you’ll enjoy what stands as a fitting update to a classic game.

Tetris DS has a lot going for it--plenty of gameplay modes, amazing game sharing, and online play--which makes it all the more disappointing that it contains no "pure" Tetris experience, and features a weak selection of online gameplay modes. But still, it's Tetris, one of the most popular and significant puzzle games ever, and some of the magic that put it in such a venerable position still manages to shine through.

Tetris DS failed to wow me. A lacklustre online service, and only one or two new modes worth playing just don't add up to a DS game's worth of value for me, especially since I can play Quinn on my Mac with the same rules for free. If you want a true DS puzzler - not a puzzler on the DS - get Meteos or Polarium (preferably the former). If you want Tetris, there's a billion downloadable free games online. The only people who should want Tetris DS are retro Nintendo nuts. It's by no means a bad or poorly executed game, but nothing stands out and says 'buy the game for this feature'.

If you're sold by the 10-person multi-player mode as well as the online mode then you're probably going to get this game regardless of what I say. I could honestly say that this game will give you a mental workout that could ultimately make you a better Tetris player - but that requires work and dedication - two words that are not synonymous with fun.

Tetris DS scores its biggest points for doing so many things with a pretty small number of shapes. Though most of the new modes are novelties, the nice variety coupled with great LAN play makes this some solid methadone.

Tetris DS also offers a wealth of multiplayer and wi-fi modes, but I didn't have much luck with them. The setup is time consuming, and you always get stuck with some Tetris whiz who can stack the pieces faster than you can see them. Personally, I always felt Tetris was best played solo. Tetris DS is a nice package, but where are the other popular Tetris variations like Dr. Mario, Tetris Attack, or Tetris 2? I guess Nintendo is betting we'd be willing to buy them on a separate cartridge, and they're probably right.

Saving Progress (C)

Despite the disappointments, Tetris DS is still exactly that - Tetris, and you can only fuck up Tetris so much. The original Gameboy version of the game is still king, and there’s plenty of puzzle games on DS to buy first, but Tetris DS is an all right game.
