Of course, veterans will be able to jump right in and start augmenting their tactics right away. And again, when you start really digging in and exploring the possible strategies, you'll realize exactly how brilliant of an expansion this is. The hottest online shooter is now better than ever. Do yourself a favor and experience it firsthand.

The bottom line is, if gamers liked Battlefield 2, then they will undoubtedly like Special Forces as well. On the other hand, if players didn’t totally get all into Battlefield 2, then the changes made here and there in Special Forces will likely go unnoticed. Once you finally are ready to play and begin, don’t be surprised to find yourself totally enamored and obsess about this game, even if you get pissed waiting for things to load. It’s a small price to pay, really.

Special Forces delivers exactly what fans of the series want - new maps, new toys, and new forms of transportation, including a grappling hook and zipline. As you may have guessed, almost all these things are great additions to an already fantastic multiplayer game. Unfortunately, this expansion has a rushed feel to it overall, as it isn't quite as balanced or bug-free as it should have been out of the gate.

Don't expect much in the way of improved graphics or audio. What you can expect is that the more stuff that appears onscreen, the slower the framerate. To play this game without bugs will require some work on your part. If you're a fan of Battlefield 2 then you know it's worth the effort. The load times can be horrendous and even exiting the game can be a gut-wrenching experience since the music continues to play and you may find your PC unresponsive for a couple of minutes as the game doesn't seem to want to let you go. Could be a sign of desperation. Hopefully by the time you read this most of the bugs will be worked out.

Special Forces delivers more of the intense urban combat that fans of Battlefield 2 love, and there are a lot of cool moments in the game, from the way you parachute into one level, to the intense and desperate firefights that can erupt for control of a flag. If you love Battlefield 2, then the expansion is a no-brainer. But there's plenty in here for newcomers to appreciate, as well. Just wait a while for EA to settle out all the issues first.

Basically, if you still play BF2, you'll like Special Forces. If you got a lot of mileage out of BF2 but got bored, I think the new maps and vehicles will reinvigorate your jones. If BF2 never clicked with you or you became frustrated with slow map loads, then SF isn't likely to change your mind. You can still get capped, wait to respawn, make your way back to the action, and get cut down as quickly as before (although this isn't nearly as pronounced as it was in, say, Joint Operations). Tanks will still eat infantry for breakfast, with the APC not far behind when in the hands of an experienced operator. And aerial targets are still pretty difficult to take down. What you get with Special Forces boils down to a batch of maps (albeit well-designed ones), some slightly new weapons to choose from, and a few new vehicles. There is still only Assault: Conquest mode, which is largely why I don't recommend to those of you who didn't dig BF2.

Overall, this is a pretty solid follow-up to Battlefield 2 and while it could of been better (hopefully patches will fix some weak areas and bugs), I do recommend it for any Battlefield 2 player or fan of the Battlefield franchise.

I understand that the DICE team that worked on Special Forces isn't the same one that crafted the core game, but that's no excuse to not address issued that fans have complained about for months. This expansion delivers the goods in terms of content, but is a slap in the face to devotees hoping for bug fixes. For the next Battlefield campaign, the developers had better re-evaluate their recruitment strategy.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces is a solid expansion pack that really can't fail to appeal to Battlefield 2 players. The concentration on urban warfare was a smart move and the expansion as a whole (with its weapons, vehicles, and maps) is very enjoyable. However there have been no performance increases and the need to patch Battlefield 2 before installing the expansion and then having to download and install a 280MB patch to play online is disappointing. The expansion isn't any more deaf gamer friendly than Battlefield 2, which is disappointing if not entirely unexpected.

Shame on you EA!

Still, this disrespect of the customer aside, there's little to object to in the mission pack. Effective, brutal and full of hard-as nails military posture, it's a decent expansion pack to one of the best games of the year. It solves some of its problems - the lack of maps being a main bugbear - and adds a few more new toys to keep the militar-o-philes happy. Career soldiers won't be disappointed and those considering a second tour of duty have enough incentives to head back into the field.

The best thing about Special Forces is the fact that it's an excuse to revisit a great game with a couple new toys on some new maps. Still, we expect more for thirty dollars. We want loads of maps, more meaningful lighting, more classes, more new vehicles and maybe a play mode other than Conquest. It's probably worth another tour of duty, but we wouldn't rush to enlist

The most astute comment I've heard about Battlefield 2 still applies to Special Forces: everything about it sucks except for the actual game. And that part -- the core gameplay that holds it all together and drives it forward for hours on end once you've finally got it up and running and reasonably stable -- remains as great as ever. But if EA's expansion packs are going to continue consisting of content that doesn't expand so much as prolong, then the least they can do is give them more forthright titles. For Special Forces, might we suggest Battlefield 2: New Maps, New Toys and Some Bugs for Thirty Bucks?

And that’s just it: If you live by the long-range shot, this is the one you’ve been waiting for. With go-anywhere grappling hooks and zip lines, lone wolves (in this case, sniper and assault classes) can set up camp among the many cranes, towers, and rooftops and will pack the tent only to relocate or restock. Finding someone with an ammo-supplying support kit, however, is another story...and engineers, who get none of the new goodies, are almost nonexistent. We say: more reason to have added an objective mode (à la the stellar Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII expansion) that puts a premium on all kits.
