For the price, and the overall great job done there isn't much that's bad about 187 Ride or Die at all. While it borrows heavily from loads of games that we've played before this is the first decent game of its type on the Xbox. The graphics are great with plenty of detail, you are never fighting the controls, the speed effects and weapons are great and the storm drain levels rock. There are parts of this game that almost make you feel like you're in the middle of some Jerry Bruckheimer movie; all that's missing is Will Smith.

While I liked the demo I saw of this game at E3, something apparently happened between then and the release date to suck much of the fun out of the game. The dialog was (probably) unintentionally cheesy and didn't help to bring me into the game at all. The gameplay itself was boring and repetitive without really anything different to offer. A complete lack of players on Xbox Live leads me to believe that the opinions in this review are pretty much shared universally. That or everyone's playing Burnout: Revenge online. They could easily have gotten rid of the urban theme, the language and music and it wouldn't have changed this game one iota. No matter how you slice it, it's a sub-standard driving game in the vein of the Twisted Metal series without the sense of humor or fun that was found in it.

The basic racing is fairly well done, if repetitive; but attempts to broaden 187's scope, such as the Twisted Metal-style combat levels, serve only to frustrate. I did enjoy the escort missions, and the co-op is decent, but they can't hide the fact that 187 is just plain mediocre. Oops, I mean mediocrizzle. My bad, playboy.

In the end, this title equates to a renter’s dream. 187 Ride or Die goes for gun blazing, in your face action, and doesn’t stop until you say uncle. The problem is, it doesn’t always succeed. The story mode is weak, but can be replayed for some unlockables that transfer over to the multiplayer side of things. The co-op mode is an interesting idea, and works great, and there is online support to keep fans happy for a spell. That said, this isn’t a title worth the asking price. While this genre of gaming is certainly a rare breed on the Xbox, there are too many shortcomings for a full $50 price tag. Absolutely rent it for a weekend of mindless fun, but return it and move on. 187 Ride or Die certainly took the best elements of some top-notch titles, but didn’t execute any of them in a way not seen before.

Overall, 187 Ride or Die is a competent but uninteresting combat racing game that looks good but is dragged down by dumb writing and poor performances. While there are some laughs to be had at the game's expense, there certainly aren't enough to make this game worth picking up. If you're a sucker for bad writing, rent it for a few days.

187 Ride or Die isn't that bad a concept; it is just not executed all that well. What the game lacks overall (besides a good story, better controls and more open-ended tracks) is some sort of new twist on the genre. Instead of trying a few new things, it instead finds an existing mold and replaces banana peels and turtle shells with machine guns and missile launchers. A few core gameplay elements make it worth at least a rental, though you're likely to find more fun with the Multiplayer aspects rather than the poorly written single-player one.

187 Ride or Die is a prime example of a game that tries too hard to "fit in," instead of trying to make a name for itself. If a little more focus had been placed on adding depth to the game, 187 could have been a solid title for Ubisoft. Instead, comical use of lingo and the otherwise average presentation make 187 Ride or Die feel more like a poser than a player.

Ubisofts latest race title featuring gangsters, street racing and lots of guns does not give me what the doctor ordered. '187 Ride or Die' lacks the gameplay that is needed to give you the thrill of your life err ... ride (just like Burnout 3 did) and the game feels like a spin off of various better ones. Graphics are alright on X-Box but the music and sound effects are awful. Even the dialog or better the gangsta slang is ridiculous. I have never heard so much F-words and other gangsta slang then in 187 Ride or Die. The game could be so much better if the developer spend some more time on originality, creativity and sound. Instead 187 Ride or Die is an average street racing game that only those 'gangsta' gamers will appreciate. And I don't think there are many out there. In the end, better rent the game before you decide to buy it.

187 Ride or Die lacks a number of things that could have made this a worthwhile action game so all we’re left with is a disappointing racing game with a gangster flavor. Aside from the poor controls and the limited choices in racetracks, gamers will quickly get tired of the game’s repetitiveness and lack of an interesting story. Rent this one for its online and offline multiplayer otherwise steer clear of this one.

187: Ride or Die has all the markings of a quick cash-in, following in the wake of the GTA series, most notably, San Andreas with its mid-90s ‘hood theme. Its low production values – limited variety of gameplay modes, cookie cutter story, and bad scripting – really kill any potential this game had. Single-player is fun for an hour or so, and the multiplayer and online modes will add some more time you spend with the game, but not much else. You’re better off playing Mario Kart, Twisted Metal, and Grand Theft Auto separately than playing this.

Game Chronicles (5.7 out of 10)

If you played the old Starsky & Hutch game back in 2003 and enjoyed it then you will probably have some fun here, although much like that game, 187 Ride or Die is a game that was designed around two players and is best played as such. There are much better racing games out there and much better shooting games out there. I have to at least commend Ubisoft for trying to marry the genres, but the awkward solo game and the grotesque abuse of urban slang makes this a hard sell with so many other game competing for you gaming dollar.

Multiplayer options, offline and online, are perhaps the best way to experience 187 Ride or Die, but it's little consolation for the mediocre singleplayer modes. The presentation is passable, but the gameplay and attempt at gangster scene is far from so. As a rental for a gaming session with friends, this is perhaps recommendable for a quick thrill, but otherwise it reveals itself to be tiresome, frustrating, unimaginative and undoubtedly a waste of money.

Graphically the game looks about as good as it plays, which isn't a compliment, just in case you weren't paying attention. The animation is stiff and the characters all look like blow-up dolls. They move like them as well. The music is repetitive and even though I hate rap the lack of variety is sure to grate on everyone's nerves. The voiceovers are not bad but the dialog is awful. Whomever wrote this script just doesn't have a clue. 187 Ride or Die is bad - but it's not so bad that it's good. There's nothing good about it, period.

This modern derivation of the English language is Ubisoft's attempt to come correct and offer a look at the streets by fusing racing and fighting. Sadly, once an idea is pushed past its freshness date and watered down by years of mainstream exposure, all that is left is the shell of something that once had both potential and power. Enter 187: Ride or Die. Rent the game if you feel compelled to, but you'd be far better off playing Mario Kart or any of the excellent high-end racers like Burnout 3 or Project Gotham Racing 2. At the very least, you'll never have to worry about who is in the room when you play those titles.

And so to Exhibit C. It's so gangsta. It's so street. It's so shite. Painfully forcing every urban cliché going into every line of dialogue, the cutscenes reduced us to fits of laughter. That's laughing at, not with. Unless, in the real life we haven't heard about, gangsters really do race on city streets blowing the hell out of each other, the jury rests its case. Guilty, of the crime of being crap.

It feels as if the developers made a few tracks, a few cars andused those for their base for everything. Switch up the backgrounddetails, add some annoying and overkill ghetto talk, some ripped andmodified crash scenes from Burnout and you have ‘187 Ride or Die’. 187 Ride or Die
I sentence you to life without the possibility of ever being playing on my Xbox again.

This could have been a great game if there had been more depth to the story and the voice acting wasn’t so horrible. It’s not what gamers have come to expect from Ubisoft, that's for sure. It might even be a stretch to say this game would make a good rental. If you’re looking for a driving game with a little more to offer, check out the new Burnout Revenge instead, and let this one rot at the bottom of the bargain bin.

And they, meaning real tough guys, should kick this waste of time out of their hood in a heartbeat. If you define yourself to be ghetto in the first place and are attracted to 187's roughneck outer shell, prove you're a hoodlum and blow your money on more dubious material instead, like a bottle of Old English. After spending some time playing this poser, I could use a swig myself.

This whole game just offends me. Offends me more as a gamer than anything else. Ubi Soft has really been on top of the publishing world this generation, and it pains me to see dretch like this seep through the cracks. Well, I guess you put up the money, you have got to at least see if you can make some of it back. Do them a favor and never spend money on this game to send a message that we can't be won over on quick cash-ins of overrated, morally destitute genres.
