Considering the story is meant to set in motion the historic events of the Ys universe, it is easy to recommend this game to both newcomers and diehard fans alike. With three character stories, five different difficulty levels, a boss rush mode and an Arena mode, there is near-limitless amounts of content to be had here. With its well-paced and incredible plot, fun combat, great music, interesting characters, solid translation, Steam achievements, and especially its low entry price, Ys Origin holds a lot of value and should be an easy purchase for any RPG fan. Now let's hope XSEED does to Ys I & II what it did to this game.

Ys Origin is a nice bit of game for the price. $20 gets you a thoroughly enjoyable PC RPG that both looks and sounds great, despite its age. You'll get about 10 hours of entertaining gameplay, really strong narrative (for a Ys game), and a great localization to go with it. Beyond all of this, you'll also get an unlockable third character and new Steam achievements. Outside of hating action RPGs or not having $20, I can't think of another reason to pass on this game.

If you long for the nostalgic feel of the SNES RPG days, or like fast-paced dungeon-blasting with an anime story, give Ys Origin a try. Just be ready for the other old-school JRPG qualities: the occasional grind to keep up with the power curve, heavy-handed angsty dialogue from wide-eyed heroes, and some devilishly-demanding boss fights.

Ys Origin is a very tightly crafted experience. Considering that a single playthrough with one character will only take about six to seven hours, it's amazing how much story is packed into that amount of time. Playing through as a different character won't necessarily change things too drastically, but it does a good job of providing a different enough perspective to make it worthwhile, especially considering how quickly it can be done. The game's great pacing makes it an easy game to replay, as there is very little padding here. This along with the responsive gameplay, well-trimmed story, and outstanding soundtrack make it easily one of the highest-quality Ys games around as well as an outstanding action RPG in general.

The game does come in at a $20 Steam price point, normally a bit steep for those who play more indie-based titles, but with 10 hours of gameplay with the two default characters alongside a third unlockable character, a boss rush mode and a plethora of Steam achievements the price isn't as much of an issue as you'd initially expect. If you are a Ys fanatic you've already had this on pre-order, but for those who are on the fence but love action RPGs this is a solid recommendation.

Between the two Ys games released on Steam this year, I feel that Ys Origin is just that bit better than Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Both are great titles, but Origin builds on the formula with a solid, constructed experience from start to finish that never gets stale, great pacing, multiple and distinctive characters and a fast, in your face combat system. For £12.99 on Steam, you seriously cannot go wrong with checking out this top action RPG.

It's not terribly pretty and the plot isn't going to stick with you for long, but these are minor quibbles. The combination of lightning-fast gameplay, constant forward momentum, and totally jamming music come together quite nicely for Ys Origin. It's not perfect and certainly has its share of hiccups, but if you go in expecting to tear up some mean guys and rock out to some great music, you'll definitely be happy. And with a $20 price tag, you really can't go wrong.

Although the quality of the graphics is high and the gameplay fast, surprisingly the RPG will run perfectly well on a moderately powered laptop. Although the game is now six years old, it still remains a highly enjoyable experience.

Ys Origin is great for those who want to know more about the lore of the series (and so many parts tie in with past — but set in the future — installments), as well as those who love a good slasher. It controls rather well, and the game's presentation is often charming. For those who have never played a game from this series before, this one is a great way to YS your way into it. Ah ha ha! Ho ho ha! Funny.
