With the release of Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (C&C 3) on the PC, fans will be treated to a, well, reunion of sorts. Set in the familiar Tiberium universe, C&C 3 hosts battles between the Nod and the GDI and the new alien faction, the Scrin. But a word of warning to the C&C faithful: Tiberium Wars isn't new in its gameplay. This is the same C&C genre-specific game that fans have grown well used to. What it does offer, however, is C&C's most beautiful game to date.

Of course it wouldnât be a C&C without the flashy FMV (thereâs an acronym I havenât used in forever), and it certainly helps that EA went for broke by employing folks like Trica Helfer and Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica), Josh Holloway (Lost), and Michael Ironside (the voice of Sam Fisher in the Splinter Cell games). And FMV never looked better, as in plenty of DVDs play half as crisp. Sure, the storyâs on par with something youâd throw rice at in a theater, but thatâs what this series is all about, after all: one crazy, explosive, silly, gorgeous, over-the-top moment after another.

To cut a long story short, you can say what you want about the king of franchise milkage, but the fact remains that this is yet another noteworthy addition to the Command and Conquer license. With enough content to entangle you into an exciting single-player campaign and a satisfying multiplayer experience, C&C 3 is a strategy game I'd advise you all to pick up.

In many ways it was always going to very difficult to create a new Command & Conquer game that would live up to the fans expectations. Almost unbelievably though, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is probably the sequel that everyone wanted. The single-player campaigns are first class and will hold your attention from beginning to end. Lasting between 20 and 30 hours the 35+ single missions are going to keep you busy for a while and when you're done you can take on the rather good AI in the skirmish mode. Of course then you have the online play which is certainly as good as most could have hoped for. It is disappointing that deaf gamers will miss out on elements of the game and this has to be my only disappointment with what is a very impressive addition to the Command & Conquer series.

TÀytyy tunnustaa, ettÀ aluksi C&C 3 tuntui pettymykseltÀ. Ehdin juuri tottua Supreme Commanderin monipuoliseen strategiaan, ja sitten tÀytyi palata takaisin kuluneelta tuntuvaan perusnaksutteluun. So, is Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars worth splashing the cash on? Definitely yes! Sure, the game lacks the revolutionary innovations introduced by competitors in recent years but it almost would not be Command and Conquer if it did. So, if you are a longtime fan of C&C, this game brings the goods to the battlefield. Get it! It's one of the finest real-time strategy games in years.

If you're a fan of the Command & Conquer series, three small words are bound to get you excited: Kane is back. Indeed, so are a good number of beloved series hallmarks, like a huge amount of full-motion video and intense strategic combat. But Tiberium Wars is a lot more than just lip service to franchise enthusiasts, and you don't need the rose-hued glasses of nostalgia to appreciate its polish and intensity. It's simply a superb game that's fun and exciting to play both online and off.

But then, that's what a C&C game does, after all. Real actors, over-the-top stories, hyperkinetic special effects, and straight-up pulp without any silly self-awareness. Let the RTS wonks and contrarians toss it overboard for what it regurgitates -- it won't be one iota less entertaining.

If you take Tiberium Wars for what it is, rather than what a fair few unrealistic hopers wanted it to be, then it's incredibly difficult to find fault. The retro touches like the return of cheesy cut-scenes, the universe itself and the focus on Tiberium in its decidedly science fiction storyline have had just the right amount of effort applied to make this an incredibly refined experience. Yes, skirmishes can be a little shorter than they used to be, but the slight refocus on frantic explosive action is all the progression the series really needed. Rather than make something new and try and force a gaming revolution, EA have taken something old and evolved it, with impeccable results. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars takes a deserving place in the 'legendary' RTS line-up and will prove the perfect fix for long-time fans as well as a shining example to the few people still new to the genre.

Fazit: unbedingt zuschlagen!

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is... well, it's not the third Command & Conquer game. All things considered, it's more or less the eigth Command & Conquer game. Instead, it's the third of the Tiberian series / storyline. The whole name screams of cheap anyways. "It's got Tiberium and it's got Wars, let's call it Tiberium Wars!". So let's not talk about that. For those familiar with the series, well... frankly, all you need to know is this. The game is good. Really good. Command & Conquer good. Why are you reading this? You don't need to read this. Go out and get the game and it'll tell you much more than I could.

With games like Supreme Commander bringing tactical depth and tech leveling to the next level, EA has walked a different path with C&C3. Tiberium Wars is to Supreme Commander what Serious Sam is to Half-Life 2. Itâs a game with a cheesy atmosphere and a great technical backing that makes for quick and fun gameplay. However, the balancing issues are a real party pooper for those that like playing with NOD and the fact that both campaigns are in se the same doesnât help either. Command & Conquer is back and itâs fun, but it could have been near perfect if EA would have taken a little bit more care of the issues mentioned.

I suppose the upshot of it is, Tiberium Wars is an old game in new clothing, which, fortunately, is a not a bad thing. EA LA stuck to C&C's roots in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, almost to a fault. While there are new features and tweaks to increase the pace of play, the core fundamentals remain strikingly similar to previous games in the C&C Tiberium series. Players looking for something new in their RTS aren't going to find it here, but they will find plenty of fun. The tempo has been given a jump start but this is basically the same RTS we've been playing for years and years, which will undoubtedly please throngs of fans. This time around it's just more polished and presented in its most beautiful package to date.

With all this said though, you'd be hard pressed to find another RTS out there that beats C&C 3 in quality when implementing said traditional and generic fundamentals, and while the live action isn't what I'd call premier movie grade, it is definitely some of the best acting and story telling the gaming world has ever seen giving a rather "big budget by gaming standards" impression. If you're expecting the end all one-of-a-kind RTS in C&C 3, you will be disappointed, but if you're expecting some no-nonsense, down right fun and addictive RTS gaming based around a proven formula, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

By setting the tone as unrealistic melodrama, you subconsciously expect the game to be. And lo! It Is. So you just get down to harvesting as much Tiberium as you can, and spending it on the finest array of military hardware you can amass, to prepare for the over-the-top future war. Jetpack troopers. Enormous robots that can tear apart their own vehicles to add more weapons. Enormous floating frisbees of death. Orbital death lasers. And, of course, our old friend the nuclear missile. And that's exactly what Command & Conquer 3 feels like. As the screen fills with explosions, it feels like an old friend. It's good to have him back.

Command and Conquer 3 enters the reinvigorated RTS genre by providing a fun single player experience along with some great multiplayer. Hardly groundbreaking, the game upgrades just enough to feel unique on its own while still remaining enjoyable to play. True, it could be said EA played it safe with this latest entry into the series, but most seasoned C&C veterans probably prefer it this way. C&C3 feels like a mashed up version of the original 1995 game, transferred to the Generals style, minus the innovative features. The introduction of Scrin is implemented well but I'd have preferred to see the time invested in adding depth to GDI and NOD with the introduction of 6 or so units on each side. There are few surprises on offer, and while most design decisions are solid you can't help but think something more ambitious things could have been accomplished. Back when Tiberian Sun was released we all thought it was a good game but knew it had fundamental design issues that meant it would never be in the same league as the classic originals. C&C3 makes similar mistakes and again we're left, 12 years later, with a C&C game lacking the charm and excitement of the originals.

While there's a certain obnoxiousness in its total refusal to innovate, in a lot of ways it's exactly the right real-time strategy game at exactly the right time. After years in the wilderness, RTS is pretty cool again right now, and something as cheerfully straightforward as this is just what's needed to stop the big braininess of Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander leading to another plunge into an inaccessibility that turns more casual players off the whole genre. On its own, it wouldn't work, but as an alternative, even a companion piece, to those it's a gentle success. This is the ying to their yang, the Question of Sport to their Have I Got News For You - it's pure trash, and it suits Command & Conquer through-and-through. Really, it has no right to try and be anything else, and it's because it knows this that it works so well.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That old adage seems particularly appropriate for the new Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, the latest in the futuristic RTS series pitting the Global Defense Initiative against the Brotherhood of Nod. The game takes the series back to its roots with fast-paced gameplay, full-motion video sequences with familiar actors, and enough explosions to keep armchair generals on the edge of their seats. While the graphics and sound have been updated for the times, don't expect many changes in the way the game is played and how it feels. This is Command & Conquer, and the developers didn't mess too much with a winning formula.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars could have easily gone the other way but EA has done a wonderful job at capturing the essence of the C&C series in Tiberium Wars.

Command & Conquer is being brought to the masses this time. Not just the regular masses... the massive masses. The game has changed to suit this, and once the faction-balancing issue has ben sorted - something bound to be in place before the Xbox 360 launch later in the year - well, this is likely to be the most popular Command & Conquer ever. And it's all thanks to accessibility.

Definition of a solid RTS
by Viktor Kovacs (14)
The Good
First and foremost you are immediately taken aback by the visual feast that is Command and Conquer 3. The dynamic lighting and wonderful explosion and weather effects are absolutely splendid. Going past that you have a solid RTS that makes you feel like you've jumped right back into the CnC chair. Itâs worn, itâs battered, but itâs comfortable and has never let you down. The boys over at EA have adopted the squad-acting-as-one-unit format over the single man format. This of course allows for huge armies and huge battles put together in a relatively short amount of time. In addition, infantry are neither useless nor overly effective as opposed to previous CnC titles. Once you complete even one campaign, you really feel like you've accomplished something, which is something a lot of RTSs cannot say. The story is compelling and gives an epic feeling. Overall it's a great new chapter in the Tiberium saga.
The Bad
That being said, EA and Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars really bring nothing new to the table in terms of an RTS game. Itâs pretty standard: Three factions, each with fairly standard super weapons, special abilities, infantry, armor and air units. Nothing that hasn't been done before. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? Well... yes and no. Its pretty much impossible to call yourself an RTS fan and not like this game, it uses all the standard proven tactics that have made a classic household name RTS. However, you can lose interest fairly quickly having experienced all this before. Once you've completed the campaigns and played with the variety of units all of the factions have to offer, all that's left over is a bare bones solid RTS with a standard multiplayer feature and skirmish mode. Whether thatâs good or bad is up to you.
The Bottom Line
Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars sets the standard for this generation of RTSs. This fan in particular will use it as a measuring stick for all future RTS titles. If you're looking for a good RTS, you cannot go wrong with this one.

When C&C goes EA
by Kayburt (19682)
The Good
This game certainly took the best elements from the games developed by Westwood such as garrisoning infantry, and doing secondary objectives and the promotion for units. And let's not forget Joseph D. Kucan reprising his role as Kane and showing a lot more emotions and vibes than he did in Tiberian Dawn and Sun. Of course the new cast of characters are well chosen and execute the cutscenes brilliantly. And finally there's the Scrin campaign, which makes for a nice little extra.
The number of different infantry and vehicles alike all have different purposes in battle. It feels kind of good to have wheels rolling again as opposed to the majority of walkers from Tiberian Sun. The most versatile are the GDI's APC and NOD's Avatar. Then there's the superweapons in the arsenal, which absolutely barrages and even devastates your opponent if targeted in the right place.
The Bad
In this game there are features lacking such as Frank Klepacki's awesome soundtracks as well as campaigns shorter by a mission or two. New and bad features were also added to the mix. Unlike previous C&C games, there was never any fog of war, which you might be used to by now, except for one problem. In most strategy games, you can order your units to attack a building shrouded by the fog, but in this game, you can't until it appears in your visual range, which makes commanding different groups twice as hard as it ought to be. As for the minimap, it's unreliable as it doesn't show units very well with such dull colours. Then there's ranking between you and opponents in the campaign. You have to grind your units winnings to get experience, but your opponent can sometimes mass produce promoted units. Talk about an unfair advantage.
The most annoying mechanics that ruin the gameplay are the clunky movement of the units. Sometimes they when you command them to retreat, some will do a U-Turn right into the path of danger, while other will try to improvise dangerous routes that get them by opponents. The Scrin are particularly this clunky, like they've been high on Tiberium. Regarding unit behaviour, Defensive set units seems to behave exactly the same as Aggressive set ones, you end up destroying a harvester or air unit that you meant to capture. It's also hard to select some of the flying units when you need to. All this is pretty much a high-speed train wreck. The earlier C&C games had units moving in perfect rotation and proper routes. To add to annoyance is the computer constantly telling you that your units are under attack including the ones on-camera, which is very redundant. If the word Artificial Stupidity were real in computers, this game would be a fine example.
The Bottom Line
Some fans and players into the old-style C&C may feel alienated by the new game features and mechanics and not by the Scrin themselves. But because the storyline and lore are faithful to the prequels, it's not an intentional disappointment in it's own right. Once you get into the game, whether you've gained experience from the previous games or the tutorial, you're bound to get far, mission by mission. This title does have it's place among the C&C collection like some first cousin once removed to that of Tiberian Sun. Don't hesitate to try and play this one.
