All in all, however, despite the stigma of “Evercrack,” EverQuest is one of those epic titles that every self-respecting gamer should give a shot at enjoying. Unless you despise role-playing titles or don’t enjoy regular access to the Internet, you deserve to give yourself a shot at enjoying this undying gem, which, even after half a decade of wear and tear, continues to be tremendous fun.

My final verdict on this game: It's Tough! You should get your character and interface completely set up before you venture out of your starting city. The players you encounter take the game very seriously, and you'll need to also because your survival and game experience depend on it. It is very much like life, and in more ways than one. Some players use the game strictly to socialize in a "role-playing" fashion. There are guilds just for baking. There are brew masters, and musicians beyond the gaming levels. I read of a bard guild that performs concerts "for online parties", and they only get money and experience from their performances, and the sale or trade of special high-level instruments. They have never ventured out to battle. So, if you want a challenge, and you can afford to pay the fees, then I highly recommend Everquest Mac Edition.

Sony has brought a solid and fully realized online world to Mac gamers. Let's hope that the company continues to support Mac users with new premium online titles.

As one of the first MMORPGs to hit the Mac platform, Everquest is an important first step. Success with this title might convince Sony to expand their Macintosh offerings to include some of their newer and flashier MMORPGs like Planetside or Star Wars Galaxies. Until then Mac users get to start out the same way the PC users did, learning the tricks and trades of the MMORPG through Everquest. A positive aspect here is that people have figured out how to do everything in the game at this point. If you are stuck or need help, there are numerous Web sites devoted to Everquest and to helping new players find their way around.

However, even with its slow start, EverQuest is enormous fun—and enormously addicting. The fantasy worlds of EverQuest are rich, complex, and marvelously compelling. The first month of online play is free—and it's just enough time to hook you. After that, there's a monthly fee of $12.95, so enter at your own risk.
