All this adds up to very little in the complaints department, and I'm sorry I didn't review Warlords Battlecry earlier because I think it would have found its way onto our Game of the Year ballot under one heading or another. As it stands, it will have to be satisfied with the first Gamer's Choice Award that I've given in the 6 months I've been writing for GO.

The excellence at which this game was pieced together - including an almost streamlined interface, make it a joy to play. The level of detail and balancing that was put into it is wonderful, and the system is generally intuitive enough that most RTS players can get into it just from playing the tutorial levels, while more advanced gamers can comb through the many tables and guides on playing each individual race to judge on specific building and combat strategies. It's a heap of fun, and people looking for something different and fresh as far as fantasy RTS are encouraged to give this old timer a look.

Warlords: Battlecry is a fun creation that can compete with 3D technologically more advanced games. There are few successful fantasy RPG, and the Warlords are a quality product. It will enchant every fan of fantasy games as well as RPG/FRP, and strategies.

In a market that's presently saturated with 3D real-time strategy games, many of which have science-fiction themes, it's great to see a 2D fantasy game that actually brings something new to the table. While Warlords Battlecry is evidently derivative of other fantasy-themed strategy games, its combination of elements taken from its predecessors makes the game unique in its own right. The focus on heroes particularly adds an interesting angle to the gameplay, and along with the de-emphasis on resource gathering, it makes the game seem substantially different from its predecessors. Also, the sheer variety of units and play options ought to keep you occupied for a long time. So if you're interested in real-time strategy games and don't mind getting a little nostalgic, then you ought to give Warlords Battlecry a shot.

Once you get over the dull graphics and interface glitches, BATTLECRY manages to retain a surprising amount of the old WARLORDS charm, while offering new-school RTS gamers a novel challenge. It’s the first RTS game to successfully incorporate that “just one more level” hook that makes titles like DIABLO or MIGHT & MAGIC so addictive. Now, if you'll pardon me, I have to level-up my Undead Necromancer so I can buy that third-level spell I’ve had my eye on...

Although the RTS realm is rapidly becoming a three-dimensional one, Warlords Battlecry proves that there’s still room for a 2D offering, so long as it’s fun, well-presented and replete with original ideas. These factors are certainly present in abundance, as a heavy RPG theme has been injected into a Warcraft II-type mold, leaving plenty of opportunities for strategic planning and character development. In this respect, the persistent Hero is a terrific addition, as it lends considerable individuality to each player’s solo and multiplayer campaigns. However, there are a few issues that keep this game from reaching its full potential, as the AI is rather simplistic, and the overall concept is firmly entrenched in the repetitive sameness that pervades the genre. Nevertheless, if you pine for the days of good, old-fashioned RTS orc-bashing, you owe it to yourself to give this title a chance.

For an RTS fan such as myself, Warlords 3: Battlecry provides a much needed shot in the arm. Too many clones proliferate the market with little or nothing to distinguish them from each other or the original upon which they are based. The quality of this game alone would be enough to make most strategy clones look like the hacked together piles many of them are. Combine that with the ability to improve your heroes and take them beyond the current battle and you have a really fun game.

Warlords Battlecry is a better-than-average RTS with enough depth, breadth, scope and challenge to keep the average armchair warrior on active duty. However, the frustrating linearity, at times crappy AI and dated graphics keep it from snatching a place in history as a markedly innovative title.

The game is fun to play and looks good, although other than a few new elements it does not really do much for the real-time genre. The RPG element is really more of an afterthought and the game should not be considered an RPG. I'm disappointed to say it did not hold my interest half as long as the old turn-based Warlords games, which I still play from time to time on my laptop when traveling. If you are totally burnt on the current RTS offerings, then Warlords Battlecry might be a good diversion. It's fun and entertaining and has a few elements that will challenge they way you think about real-time combat. It earns an above average 3 and 1/2 GiN Gems for marrying RTS and RPG elements, even if the arranged ceremony is a little shaky.

Despite these few flaws, Warlords Battlecry is a well constructed real-time strategy game. The sheer range of race and unit combinations combined with progressive hero character building makes the game highly compelling and varied. Multiplayer also works well, and has been given variety with a number of different mission types such as capture the flag or team based games. Fans of earlier Warlords games might not take to this real time incarnation, and players tired of this genre won't find an awful lot new here. But if you have battled your way through Warcraft II and still lust for more real time swords and sorcery, then Warlords Battlecry will provide you with hours of quality entertainment. It may also be your last chance to play this kind of game in two dimensions...

If you've not played any RTS games before, I promise you, you'll find Warlords: Battlecry to be a really enjoyable experience. The problem is, I know of exactly zero gaming types that don't already worship Warcraft or Total Annhilation and the like as a religion! The game adds almost nothing new to the RTS genre at all, and what very few (indeed, I think it's a total of 1) new features are added, aren't all that impressive. As of right now, I would only recommended it to first-timers. RTS veterans will be bored by it.

Player Reviews

Warlords: Battlecry is an engaging and well-done RTS with only a few game design flaws

The Good
The single player and multiplayer aspects of this game are both well done, especially the voice acting of many of the units. The Undead race's units, especially the Lich have some of the best voiced lines of any RTS units, including the memorable "So much DEATH!". What really makes the game is the Heroes, which are fun to develop across several single or multiplayer games. The game is very deep, with more races (about 9) and a ton of variety in its Hero abilities and spells. The resource system is well done too, eliminating the micro-management of worker units that was so annoying in StarCraft and other RTS games.

The Bad
The strengths of this game are also its biggest weakness. There is so much variety that it seems that SSG didn't have time to balance all of the races and classes against each other.

The mage classes are extremely powerful once they get Spell Mastery, and no class can touch a high level archmage who can cast all of the good offensive, defensive, and building spells. The fighter classes are pretty well done, but can't match the area of effect mage spells in pure killing power. The thief classes are pretty useless because their main benefits are too weak when balanced against their poor magic and fighting ability.

The races are generally better balanced than the classes, with a wide variety of units at first glance. However, the races really are not different enough from each other to justify supporting so many of them. SSG could have cut 3 or 4 of the races from the game and it would not have suffered in gameplay depth too much. My favorite races were the Undead, Orcs, and Humans, with the Wood Elves and Dwarves not far behind. All of the other races (Minotaurs, Nomads, Dark Elves, and High Elves) are either too simplistic or too derivative of other races to be much fun to play.

Another problem with the heroes is that once they got past level 20 or so, you could win any game just by charging the enemy with your hero and pounding or casting away. You can get around this, of course, by restricting multiplayer games to heroes of level 5 to 15, which are the most fun to play.

Finally, there was a big exploit in both single and multiplayer with any spellcaster that could create artifacts. Once you got the better artifact spells, you could start a game, beat down every opponent except for a few buildings, and then just summon artifacts for 30 minutes. Suddenly, your stats would go from average to insane, making up for any class weaknesses that you might have had.

The Bottom Line
Warlords: Battlecry is a very good translation of the classic Warlords turn-based strategy games into a real-time strategy game. It plays a lot like Starcraft or Age of Empires, but with the addition of two fun gameplay elements: the elimination of micromanagement of worker units (instead your hero Converts mines to you cause to automatically produce resources over time), and the addition of a powerful Hero unit which you can develop across many games. You can command a wide variety of races and units as you develop your hero, and your hero can choose from a myriad of spells and special abilities to help you in your conquest.
