In the end, Transformers delivers over-the-top action with wild abandon and leaves most of the more complex elements of good gameplay behind coughing from the dust kicked up by a giant transforming war machine. While each campaign will only last a few hours, it's fun if you can overlook how mindlessly you're slamming those buttons. But, if you're one of those strange unfortunates who have never understood the appeal of gargantuan robots that turn into tanks and tractor trailers, this game certainly isn't going to transform you into a believer.

Zwar frage ich mich, wieso wir in Österreich so lange auf den Film warten müssen, allerdings stellten für diesen Zweck die dazugehörigen Videospiele eine recht unterhaltsame Unterhaltung dar. Mit Transformers habe ich das letzte Mal in meiner frühen Kindheit zu tun gehabt und da es jetzt anscheinend sowieso „in“ zu sein scheint alte Trademarks wieder zum Leben zu erwecken, war es gar nicht so überraschend, dass auch Transformers mittelfristig wieder aus der Versenkung auftaucht. Die PS3- und PS2-Versionen dieses Games sind eigentlich bis auf die etwas lose zusammengefügten Missionen und dem fehlenden Multiplayermodus recht ordentlich gelungen und bieten auch viel vom Kino-Feeling. Alles in allem ist Transformers für Konsolen zwar keine Gameplay-Revolution, für Fans dürfte es aber durchaus einen interessanten Zeitvertreib darstellen.

With that said, I can't emphasize enough how much fun it is to throw a haymaker with a mechanical monster. This thrill, which covers the majority of the game, turns Transformers into an enjoyable, albeit shallow, weekend of gaming.

Transformers - The Game ist ein typisches Spiel zum Film. Es ist nicht wirklich schlecht oder gar unspielbar, aber es macht nichts wirklich gut und hat keine Eigenschaft, welches es einzigartig macht. Mit abwechslungsarmen Missionen, schlechter Spielbalance, einem extrem simplen Kampfsystem, einer drögen Geschichte und einer viel zu kurzen Spielzeit wird es allenfalls fanatische Fans des Transformers-Franchises begeistern. Auf der PS3 und der Xbox 360 profitiert es allerdings noch ein wenig vom Technikbonus. Das Spiel sieht einfach sehr gut aus und es macht bei der gebotenen grafischen Qualität durchaus Spaß, durch die Straßen zu stampfen und mit der Umgebung zu interagieren.

Transformers presents a great idea for a game. However it suffers from the same curse that affects most licensed games. If only the developers had a little more time to expound on the games key features, Transformers: The Game would be a great addition to the sandbox genre.

Transformers does have a few redeeming moments, like when you get to play as Scorponok, but there are just way too many long stretches of mediocrity for me to be able to recommend this one. The PS3 version looks great in screenshots, but it plays like a budget game and yet still sports the full $59.99 price tag. Head to your local department store and spend half as much on some of the toys - you'll have much more fun playing with the toys with a kid in your family than you would playing this game.

Eigentlich geht mit diesem Spiel - wie auch mit dem Film - ein lange gehegter Traum für Transformers-Fans in Erfüllung. Endlich können Sie die Helden ihrer Kindheit selber steuerun und das Schicksal der Menschheit in die metallenen Hände nehmen. Oder Sie bekämpfen auf der Suche nach dem Allspark die Autobots mit den abgrundtief bösen Decepticons und ihrem Anführer Megatron. Doch leider bleibt außer Fahren, Transformieren und Ballern nicht viel übrig. So rasen Sie - der Filmhandlung folgend - von einem Einsatzort zum anderen, erledigen eine Aufgabe und dann geht's genauso weiter. Schon nach kurzer Zeit macht sich gepflegte Langeweile breit, weil das Spiel auf Dauer viel zu wenig zu bieten hat. Darüber hinaus haben Sie es in knapp vier Stunden durch, egal, für welche Seite Sie sich entscheiden. Acht Stunden Spielzeit mit sehr wenig Abwechslung sind dann doch etwas mager.

Die anfängliche Befürchtung, es könne sich mal wieder nur um eine halbherzige Umsetzung einer Filmlizenz handeln, hat sich leider erneut bewahrheitet. Es scheint wohl sehr schwer zu sein ein gutes Spiel zu einem guten Film herauszubringen. Dennoch können Fans des Franchise gerne mal einen Blick riskieren, sollten aber nicht soviel Unterhaltung wie im Kino erwarten. Für Zwischendurch und zum schnellen Anheben der eigenen Gamerscores in Ordnung.

Not much else could really be said about Transformers: The Game. It’s about on par with all other movie licensed games: relatively short, decent graphics, decent gameplay, and not much value to it. It’s a mystery why most movies needs an accompanying game, but seeing as how Transformers is action based there was no way around it. By the end of the game, you may be shouting “Damn you, Michael Bay!” for bringing back Transformers to take your money, so make sure you only rent this title.

Trotz zahlreicher inhaltlicher Stärken wie einer guten Einbindung in die Story des Films bleibt ein äußerst schaler Geschmack zurück. Die Spielmechaniken werden sehr schnell vorhersehbar, sind in sich stark eingeschränkt und wirken nicht bis ins letzte Detail durchgedacht. Es gibt kein Element, in dem Transformers überzeugen kann - wenn man einmal von der vollkommenen Belanglosigkeit absieht, die die gigantischen Roboter sich mit vielen Lizenzspiel-Kollegen der jüngeren Vergangenheit teilen. Es muss doch möglich sein, ein Spiel auf die Beine zu stellen, das es sowohl schafft, den Geist des Filmes zu transportieren, gleichzeitig mit guten (von mir aus auch aus anderen Titeln entliehenen) Ideen punkten kann und sich nicht nur dem Lizenzwolf zum Fraß vorwirft. Ansätze sind da. Große Filme verdienen auch große Spiele. Und dieses Versprechen können Optimus Prime und Megatron nicht einlösen.

Still, if you liked the movie and have a high tolerance for missed potential and repetitive, button-mashing gameplay, give Transformers: The Game a shot. It’s an impossible purchase recommendation at full price but certainly worth a rental and possibly a purchase when it hits the bargain bins, which probably won’t be too long.

Transformers: The Game ultimately delivers a passable, though entirely unremarkable tie-in to the upcoming film. The one thing it nails is the size and feel of these gigantic robots and their ability to cause massive destruction, but that isn't enough to carry the entire game, especially with the burden of the periodic glitches, camera problems, and overly simplistic combat to carry as well. If all you want is to see some nice-looking robots beat each other and the world silly, then throwing down a rental fee on this game isn't a bad way to go. But regardless of your affinity for the film, the franchise at large, or giant robots in general, Transformers: The Game doesn't have enough going for it to make it worth a purchase.

Overall, Transformers: The Game possesses the ability to entertain–its open-world gameplay and hundreds of collectible items and unlockable goodies make it a good game to entertain the type of gamer who scoured Vice City and Liberty City for Hidden Packages. It will also entertain younger children who enjoyed the movie, although its difficult missions might prove to be too much for an inexperienced child to handle. And of course, the die-hard fans from the 1980's might just want to feel the rush of transforming from a destructive robot to a super-quick jet–that crowd might also want to take a look. Everyone else has seen what this game has to offer–button-mashing combat, repetitive seek-and-destroy and fetch quest missions, and other general sandbox mechanics that have been done better elsewhere. Point is, skip Transformers: The Game unless it kills you to.

A game based on Transformers could have been a lot of fun. If it featured a deeper combat engine and some inspired mission objectives, this game could have been a great War of the Monsters-esque title for those times you just want to destroy everything in sight. It's hard to recommend Transformers: The Movie on its own merits, but those looking to simply stomp around a city as Optimus Prime will have some fun with it. It has some very noticeable flaws, but none of them were severe enough that I shut the game off in disgust. Instead, I began adapting to them and found myself enjoying the game in spite of the problems. Still, I can't imagine anyone but diehard fans going to these lengths. Everyone else should stick to Atari's game based on Transformers Armada -- it's still the best way to wage a battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons.

I was disappointed in the Transformers game. I saw the movie, and despite its faults, I liked it. I can’t say the same for the game, as its defects make it more annoying than entertaining. When I first loaded up, I had fun leaping off buildings and smashing buses. After awhile, though, even that got repetitive.

Transformers Le Jeu ne tient pas vraiment ses promesses car au-delà de l'aspect défoulant qui nous propose de ravager des villes entières et de courser à toute vitesse des méchas de 10 mètres de haut, on se rend compte que le gameplay pose trop de problèmes pour vivre l'aventure à 100 à l'heure. La difficulté étant de plus fort mal calibrée, il ne restera plus qu'à garder ses euros pour le film de Bay qui s'annonce bien plus jouissif. Switch Off. Réinitilisation en cours.

Blasting through the marginally enjoyable Decepticon campaign and pussyfooting my way through the Autobot sure didn’t instill any confidence in the movie – let alone try to convince me to play through this title again. However, I must go on record having talked to a few children who were 20 years my junior and asked them what they thought of the Transformers game. Both on them unison jumped onto and off the couch, telling me it’s the best game they’ve played; and this just after they laid waste to me in COD2. My personal recommendation for this game is to skip it.

Transformers The Game is helaas geen goede game geworden. De hele game voelt zwaar verouderd aan, zowel qua gameplay als qua uiterlijk. We hebben hier dus duidelijk weer te maken met een goedkope cash-in die mee moet liften op de populariteit van de film en de licentie. Transformers The Game is voor niemand aan te raden, zelfs voor de Transformersnerds niet. Slechte games moet je namelijk nooit spelen.

Ontwikkelaar Traveller's Tales slaagt erin om een spel af te leveren dat de film geen eer aan doet; vermoedelijk zullen zelfs de fans van de tekenfilm zich er niet mee vermaken. Het is weliswaar erg cool om te transformeren, maar daar houden de positieve punten dan ook mee op. De eentonige missies, onhandige besturing en omgevingen die te snel stuk gaan verpesten het waarschijnlijk zelfs voor de diehard fans van de serie. Het meeste plezier hadden wij met de 'transformatie' van de spel-cd, de ontwikkelaar heeft gelijk, echt alles kan stuk.

Entertainment Depot, The (3 out of 10)

Transformers: The Game is a shallow, barebones title set in a universe that offers so much more. A short, flawed single-player campaign with token extras – G1 costume awesomeness aside – is a poor showing in every regard. Trouncing around and bashing transforming robots carries a title a long way, but somehow it can’t even go a smidge further to offer an experience that isn’t repetitive rubbish.

At the end of the day Transformers The Game on the PlayStation 3 does offer some interesting open-ended gameplay in between the loose driving and fighting missions, and that's the only thing saving it from being a complete wash. If you're looking to be rewarded with an authentic Transformers game experience you'll have to wait for the next time Hasbro and some game company decide to team up again, but at least you get achievements on the Xbox 360 version... PlayStation 3 players don't have that added incentive to play this game.
