With skate, EA has delivered the next step in the evolution of skateboarding games, and though it took a while before we got it, it's been well worth the wait. With its organic controls, beautiful visuals and amazing presentation, it quickly becomes an addicting experience that's tough to stop playing, even during some of the most frustrating parts of the game. Though its online modes slightly tarnish on the experience, the rest of the game more than makes up for it. With everything it has to offer, skate proves to be the best skateboarding game out there, period. We're Sorry Tony, but it's the truth.

When it's all said and done, I have to review Skate. based not on my personal love for it, but the overall aesthetics and various qualities of the game. As such, I can't give it the score that accurately reflects my feelings. This is one of my favorite video games, as it so accurately portrays skateboarding and not only the difficulty of doing so, but also the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. There is nothing like finally landing that perfect Nollie 360 flip to nose bluntslide down that 10-set handrail that you had been trying to land smoothly for ten minutes. If you didn't understand any of the terminology I just used, you might avoid Skate. or play it just to learn more about skateboarding and skate culture. If you do, you will definitely want to pick this up.

So, despite the niggles, the very occasionally jarring physics glitches and oddly soulless career mode, Skate is undoubtedly a masterpiece. EA has given birth to a franchise that simply demands to be played and replayed, and a game that makes the still-excellent Tony Hawk's near redundant. The king is dead. Long live the king.

As a first stab at something new, EA has landed one hell of a trick for the judges - and those of us who exist outside of this tenuous analogy - to enjoy while they await the arrival of one Mr Tony Hawk to see if the Birdman has finally had his wings clipped. The demo (which went up on Live recently) certainly doesn't wow in the same way that Skate does, making declaring this the definitive extreme sports experience somewhat easier for us. Punishingly difficult but ultimately rewarding, games of Skate's caliber are a rare breed and as far as first attempts go, it's been years since we saw one this accomplished. Just... sick, man.

I spent 1 hour trying to pull off a trick, and just b4 final flip to get it right, I was bumped off flat on my face by a computer skater which makes me think online is going to be just FUN. I’m flipping 9/10 rubber chickens on this one JUNG.

To my surprise, skate. ended up being a surprisingly good game... perhaps the most enjoyable game I have played thus far on my 360. The replay value is through the roof, the graphics look superb, controls are fun and challenging, and the whole culture of skateboarding is well represented. Even the Xbox Live features give a lot of options to those that are interested. Hell, just when I think this game couldn’t be any cooler, I find that there is a Slayer T-Shirt available at the skate shop for my character to wear, making him look even MORE like me. Sweet. In short, if you are looking for a solid new game with plenty of content to keep you busy for a few weeks, take a look at skate. As far as this gamer is concerned, Activision has a lot of work to do before the Tony Hawk series seems nearly as significant as it did before skate. hit store shelves.

Simply by moving the controls from the face-buttons to the analogue sticks – an idea so simple it's amazing no-one though of it before – EA have created the best skateboarding title in years and in doing so have redefined the rules of the entire genre. A joy to play and a game which the inevitable sequel will have to go some way to top.

Despite some minor downpoints, skate. has become a great game although I'm not sure everyone will concur with that opinion. EA's skateboardsim is also a game for those that like finesse, with a heart for the gentle sport. The game is, no matter how cliché it may sound, made by and for skaters and is for me one of the biggest surprises of 2007.

Gamer 2.0 (8.6 out of 10)

Skate finally settles the question of whether two skateboarding games can co-exist. It offers more realistic gameplay that will appeal to those who have wanted a more down-to-earth style of skateboarding game. You really feel every movement in your hands, and when it happens on-screen, it only seems right. The online play and community add a lot to the package, and will keep you playing for a long time to come. If you've been waiting all these years for a reason to get lost in a skateboarding game that does the sport justice-and also happens to be a ton of fun to jam with-skate was made for you.

We could list a bunch of miniscule complaints we have about Skate, but when all is said and done, it's a whole lot of fun to play. This is especially true when you first start playing. Bottom line: the analog stick-based Flickit controls beat the pants off conventional button presses for doing flip tricks. As time goes on, the novelty of it does wear off, though, and Skate begins to feel like just a more realistic version of a Tony Hawk game. This might bother some, but it could be exactly what others are looking for. Regardless of some small faults, when it gets down to it, if you're at all into skateboarding, you simply have to play Skate.

On balance, I personally will probably stick with the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. But there is definitely an audience out there for Skate. It is a very well made game and will be appreciated more by those who would prefer a bit more realism. That leaves the game with a very respectable score in my book.

Skate is the first game that can ever stand up to the infamous Tony Hawk series. It is a very fun experience and a must play for any Tony Hawk fans or skaters who want a realistic approach at skating in video games. Although I personally prefer the classic arcade feel to Tony Hawk games, Skate is a great game for you to feel like you are actually skateboarding. I highly recommend Skate to all skateboarding enthusiasts.

With some tweaks, I think that EA has a hit franchise on their hands here with skate. If they can improve the functionality of their replay video features and inject maybe a bit more fun into some of the goals and the online play, I think that a sequel has a really good chance of becoming the most popular skateboarding game ever. But for this game, the controls are still new to so many players and a few too many areas of the game - ones with a lot of potential - simply didn't have the time spent that they needed. And while I can't ever really recommend that a new game be immediately inducted into a yearly rehash like EA's sports games often do, I'm looking forward to skate 2 whenever it does happen.

[Online review] While Skate's online functionality is largely excellent, it's occasionally crippled by lag, making races especially near impossible. As is usual the case, an online update should help to fix it, but those wanting to create immaculate lines may struggle. Still, the effort that EA Black Box has put in to make Skate the ultimate extreme sports title extends to its online modes, and for that, it must be commended. Just be prepared to do a lot of waiting.

Skate is a superb example of how an extreme sports game should be done. It’s packed with challenges, has an enormous environment to explore, a fantastic array of tricks and moves to perform and its play mechanics are easily the most accomplished yet seen in a game of this genre. For casual gamers, Tony Hawk is more suited for its ease of play, but for those up for a challenge and who want something more playable in the long-run, this is it.

So, has skate. got what it takes to become the new king of the skateboarding video game genre? Well, until I play the newest TH game, I can't say for sure. But, I can say that it definitely has a good shot at the title. skate. is a very good and enjoyable first attempt by EA. If skate.2 can fix what needs to be fixed, add a few new things and keep what worked from skate.... well, Tony Hawk might want to be ready for a fight.

A bon entendeur...

I had a real hard time scoring Skate. While it's easy for me to pick the game apart and tell you all the things I didn't like about it, the truth is that I really enjoyed this brand new take on the skateboarding genre. Most of my critiques are based more on what the competition is doing and less on what EA attempted to bring to the genre. Electronic Arts is off to a good start with Skate and I definitely hope they continue with it and make it an even better game next time around. If you've been looking for an alternative to the Tony Hawk games then this is it, just don't go in expecting this to be the same kind of over-the-top arcade sports game that the Activision series is known for. And in a lot of ways that's a good thing.

Simply put, SKATE is going to be the skate boarding enthusiast's wet dream when it comes to videogames. While series in the past like THPS have focused on huge air with insane tricks, SKATE is quite the opposite, featuring realistic air, plausible tricks and an bias towards technical prowess. This is all mainly thanks to the fact the game is played out in a fully featured physics engine with realistic gravity, velocity, momentum, collision detection etc, creating a very true to life feel to the game. In other words, things you don't expect to be possible in real life probably won't work in this game either.

Skate is a worthwhile venture on four wheels, but the control scheme and camera might cause some players to shy away. There are some fantastic ideas here and a chic front end that impresses. If you’ve got the time, and you want to experience the frustration, mutilation and eventual triumph of skateboarding, then this is your game. For those who are rooted in tradition, I hear those “other guys” have a new one out as well.

While Skate isn’t exactly eating Tony’s lunch yet, it’s a really strong first entry into what is sure to become a long-running series. The folks at Black Box (makers of the Need for Speed games) have released a bang-up rookie effort in the skating genre, with enough interesting ideas that anyone who’s been playing Activision’s games for the past few years definitely needs to check it out. A must buy? Not really. But surely a must-play.
