Just Adventure (A+) (100%)

Now, you may have wondered while reading the first paragraph of this review why I mentioned The Longest Journey. That is because I was among the people expecting a wonderful adventure game saga but sadly saw it deteriorate to a casual console-oriented hybrid. Culpa Innata rekindled this expectation, and with the ending of the game leaving questions unanswered in an X-Files kinda way and doors open to sequel(s), I am dreaming of more and can barely hold myself from peeing in my pants with anticipation. This is the saga we’ve been waiting for. Thank you Momentum.

Not since Kate Walker of Syberia have we had such an engaging protagonist as we do with Phoenix Wallis of Culpa Innata. Wallis is a young woman who is a peace officer in a futuristic system of the year 2047. As one plays the game, one assists Wallis in investigating her first major case. In addition we are given a glimpse into the inner growth of Wallis as she questions values and makes determinations that are not necessarily in her best career interest. In turn naïve, hardworking, stubborn, courageous, sensitive and innovative, Wallis finds that there may be more to life than she ever realized, and that reasons may exist for her secret reluctance to fit into the role expected of her by society. The story line is excellent and compelling. This is an immense game, and at least on the first play, one is not eager to have it completed.

Ultimately, Culpa Innata succeeds in what it sets out to accomplish – creating a believable futuristic world straight out of a good science fiction novel, and telling an intriguing story that keeps your interest till you cross the finish line. Sure, the ending leaves many questions unanswered, but it does resolve a few mysteries and gives a glimpse into a very strange society which we are sure to learn more about in the inevitable sequel. Think of Culpa Innata as a mystery in the vein of the brilliant Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, set in an out-of-this-world setting from The Longest Journey, with vast environments to explore and an occasional sense of desolation, similar to Keepsake. I give Culpa Innata two thumbs up and recommend that you don’t miss this gem of a game, especially if you’re a science fiction fan.

Gdy piszę te słowa, nie słychać nic jeszcze o polskim wydaniu i - znając poziom rodzimych lokalizacji, chciałoby się zawołać - całe szczęście! Byłoby to zawołanie egoistyczne, więc zakończę inaczej: życzę naszym graczom rychłej premiery CI w profesjonalnie przygotowanym polskim wydaniu.

Due to the story, puzzles, non-linear gameplay and dialog choices, Culpa Innata is hands-down my favorite game this year and I’d love to give it a solid A. Re-playability is a big factor as well. I know that there are a ton of things I missed because of my choices. I can see playing this game multiple times to see what changes. While having acknowledged issues that might bother other gamers, the only issues that really had any negative affect for me were the crashes/bugs and a slight irritation with the interface. However, bugs/crashes are my personal pet peeve. But, because the positives heavily outweigh the negatives, I have decided to still give the game a solid B. My hope is that another patch will be released to fix these issues as this is not a game to be missed. It is truly an experience we haven’t had in a long time. So, my suggestion is to absolutely get this game. Just be diligent about saving your games and you should be good to go.

Culpa Innata offers a deep and immersive experience that rewards players for unraveling a complex story, interacting with interesting characters, and solving intelligent puzzles. The game might not single-handedly resurrect the ailing PC adventure genre, but it should serve as a reminder that these once-popular games are still alive and well.

Culpa Innata is one of the finest adventure games of 2007. Although not without flaws (graphics, pathfinding, wordiness), it offers a solid police procedural within an engrossing futuristic setting. Further, the game is the most nonlinear I can recall within this genre, offering multiple paths to differing outcomes. The acting and puzzles are top-notch, as is the underlying deeper storyline, which makes one hope we see a sequel from this talented development team. Congratulations!

What Culpa Innata lacks in terms of innovative gameplay, it makes up for in depth – that is the key to this game. The dev team tried to give the game an immersive quality by breathing life into the time period and the character reactions and interactions. Sometimes it works, sometimes it misses. Still, this is a solid entertainment value and should be a nice diversion for fans of the genre.

Considering that this is a developer's first time out of the gate, Momentum has done a fine job with Culpa Innata. It could have used some visual refinements and a few tweaks to the back-to-the-future backdrops, although it's hard to chide this game too harshly when it gets so much right.

From the initial hint of its butterfly theme in the first few puzzles, Culpa Innata engages the player and promises to keep a few hardcore adventurers glued to their seats until the ending credits. Those that want to get the most out of the game’s experience should involve themselves with the history of the World Union, and explore every nook and cranny. Despite a few setbacks and shortcomings, developer Momentum and publisher Strategy First have a solid first-person adventure title on their hands. Can we hope for a sequel?

Culpa Innata is an ambitious adventure that at times falters due to some repetitive dialogue, bland characters and an ending that leaves a lot of questions unanswered. However, the non-linear approach combined with some clever puzzles makes this a murder mystery worth investigating.

Culpa Innata attempts some level of innovation in the adventure game genre, which is better than what can be said for some other similar games, but it does have its fair share of problems. Truth to be told, though, Culpa Innata is certainly a playable title, and given the state of adventure gaming, gamers who generally like games of the mystery/adventure variety may find Culpa Innata to be at least on par with other games of its ilk and find it an enjoyable experience.

In conclusion, I have no doubt that Culpa Innata is a stunning game—solid plot, memorable characters, many locales, and good writing. The game looks indeed very polished, and it is clear that the developer has taken great care to address every detail. Yet, I have not found the game captivating. Stunning perhaps, but not captivating. I do not feel the drive to solve the mystery, nor do I feel that I have fallen in love with Phoenix (and she has not for me, of course) as a character. The reason, maybe, is that Culpa Innata is just dispersive, not charming, and ends rather unimpressively.

IGN (4 out of 10) (40%)

There are some strong elements to Culpa Innata, but overall, the excessive amounts of bad dialogue drowns out nearly all of the stronger puzzles clamoring for attention. Any hope at the beginning of the game for a stronger story being built fizzled about halfway through and strong stories are the main reason to want to play point and click adventure games. We recommend taking a pass on this or risk taking a hit to your sanity.
