If you have the hankering to play a action top down shooter that looks good and has addictive gameplay, look no further than Shadowgrounds: Survivor. As mentioned previously, for twenty dollars, you can't go wrong. Delving into the game, I didn't expect anything out of the ordinary, but once I started playing the game, I couldn't stop till the game was finished. If you don't want to purchase the game through a brick and mortar store, STEAM is having a sale that drops the price even more. There is really no reason not to purchase the game. At least give the game a chance and you won't be disappointed.

Worth Playing (8.9 out of 10)

While almost everything has been revamped, tweaked and improved, there are still a few tiny flaws that must be illuminated. To begin with, it's still ultimately the same game, story and setting — just with new characters. This isn't all that bad really, but it can lead somewhat to a feeling of "been there, done that." Also, the ending is very anti-climactic. Shadowgrounds ends on an epic high note, while Survivor just sort of … ends. However, before I rain too much on this parade, I must reiterate that this is the most fun you're likely to have outside of an A-list, big-budget title. Like the scrappy movie crew that feels so much passion for a project that the team manages to create true art regardless of finances, FrozenByte similarly has risen up from near obscurity to release two of the most engaging action games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Survivor, the extended remix of Shadowgrounds, is a must-have for any fans of action-horror.

Shadowground Survivor on positiivinen ja tervetullut yllätys kaikkien kuluneen syksyn ja talven megaräiskintöjen keskellä. Okei, pelin kenttäsuunnittelu voisi olla ehkä parempaa ja käsikirjoitus jonkun yli 10-vuotiaan kirjoittama, mutta tosiasiat tosiasioina: kyseessä on kuitenkin halpa, pienen budjetin peli, jonka päätarkoituksena on viihdyttää ja siinä suomipojat ovatkin onnistuneet mainiosti. Shadowground Survivor on yksi tämän vuoden harvoista pc-peleistä, joita aion pelata vielä joulunpyhinäkin.

All in all, Survivor is not big step forward, actually it’s hardly even a step, but it’s more Shadowgrounds, which is enough of a reason to go and get it.

Game Revolution (B+)

While Shadowgrounds: Survivor arguably does nothing we have not seen before, its clean, solid presentation and hectic, engrossing gameplay make it worthy of praise. You get a lot of game for pocket change, and that it’s a great shooter makes it worth every penny.

The original Shadowgrounds was a retro/modern shooter filled with blood and gore and strong language and all sorts of other things that made it a M-rated experience. There were many changes made in this sequel - but the level of content wasn't one of them. The game is still incredibly violent and intense ... and the constant stream of inappropriate language also remains. There's also the problem with constant blood and gore as you explode enemies with missiles and toast them with the flamethrower. So Shadowgrounds: Survivor remains an entertaining game for adults that is full of intense but fun action.

I’ve no problems re-exploring claustrophobic corridors or rusting walkways infested with menaces not too happy to see me. I look forward to blowing them away in ridiculous numbers. Maybe it’s the sadist in me, or maybe Frozenbyte have simply gone ahead and made an addictive little game.

Eine unheimliche Atmosphäre, ein fetziger Soundtrack und viele fiese Aliens machen Shadowgrounds Survivor zum Vorzeigetitel im Genre "TopDown-Shooter". Obwohl das Game grafisch und spielmechanisch kaum Neuerungen gegenüber dem ersten Teil aufweist, so macht es trotzdem einen riesigen Spass, mal das Gehirn abzuschalten und einfach nur wild herumzuballern. Dank der drei Charaktere und deren Fertigkeiten bekommt man sogar ein bisschen RPG-Feeling geboten, welches den Suchtfaktor des Spieles nochmals steigen lässt. Die viel zu kurze Spielzeit von gerade einmal vier Stunden und die stellenweise stumpfe K.I. sollten in einem -möglichen- dritten Teil von Shadowgrounds unbedingt behoben werden.

Armchair Empire, The (8 out of 10)

For $20 on Steam, Shadowgrounds: Survivor delivers solid action gaming. It doesn't have the world-shattering ethical choices of Mass Effect. It doesn't have the strange sense of surrealism found in Dreamfall. It's an old school run-n-gun shooter that perfectly captures the flavor of the best "bad sci-fi" movies out there.

Zwei Jahre ist es her, dass Shadowgrounds herrlich altmodische Action in ein dichtes atmosphärisches Gewand packte und intensive Arcade-Action inszenierte. Zwei Jahre, in denen sich viel getan hat - nur auf Ganymed ist die Zeit scheinbar stehengeblieben. Im Grunde zeigt sich den Überlebenden ein ähnliches Bild, wie es schon der Vorgänger präsentierte: Survivors begeistert vor allem mit eindrucksvollen Schattenspielen, schickem Nebel und seinem brachialen Klang, befriedigt spielerisch allerdings nur niedrigste Gelüste. Das Konzept geht auch heute noch auf! Aber Frozenbyte hätte mehr tun können, als eine Idee einfallsreichere Levels zu stricken und Kisten physikalisch korrekt zu bewegen. Unterm Strich spielt das aber keine Rolle: Auch die Fortsetzung vereint mühelos zittrige Zeigefinger, coole Science Fiction und die Lust an jenem befriedigenden Krachen, das Actionspielern im Blut steckt.

Shadowgrounds Survivor hat zwar leider nicht alles verwirklicht, was ich mir in der Preview erhoffte, bietet aber dennoch solide und technisch ansprechende Arcade-Ballerei, allerdings mit weniger Story als noch im ersten Teil. Trotz der individuellen Eigenschaften verschenkten die Entwickler Potential bei ihrer Idee der mehreren Spielcharaktere. Dafür haben die drei einfach zu wenig miteinander zu tun und werden nicht angemessen genug in Szene gesetzt. Auch die dürftige KI hätte nicht sein müssen, nicht mal bei Alienmonstern. Der Koop macht dafür aber auch diesmal Laune und der neue Survivalmodus bietet für Solisten willkommene Abwechslung. Insgesamt ist Shadowgrounds Survivor – zumal es kein Vollpreistitel ist – sicherlich trotzdem eine lohnende Investition für alle Fans des Genres und Atmosphärefetischisten.

Undoubtedly, many people will skip Shadowgrounds Survivor, regardless of its budget price. However, while the game has got a boring-arsed story, and can be repetitive, it's so unbelievably enjoyable, so fluid to control, and so chillingly good-looking that you'll forget all that.

Shadowgrounds Survivor isn't anywhere close to as difficult as the top-down shooters of yore, but it's an excellent throwback title to a type of gameplay that doesn't require 600 hours of dedication to get to the good part, memorization of unnecessarily complicated technology trees, or the need to page through thousands of lines of dialogue options to get anything accomplished. It's simple, enjoyable, pretty, and perhaps best of all, it's cheap.

Game Chronicles (7.5 out of 10)

At first I found Shadowgrounds to be a tired attempt at a horror-themed shooter, but once I was able to come to grasps with the control scheme and use the camera angles to my advantage, the game really took a major turn upward. Most third-person shooters have some type of camera issue that can turn a player off if they don’t take the time to work it out, but as is the case with most, once you figure it out the game is a lot of fun. I think that the co-op play option really adds a level of replay value if you have a friend willing to blow up some alien scum. All in all, the game delivers an old-school feel in a new school package and it works very well together.

Overall, despite its quirks, I enjoyed the time I spent with Shadowgrounds Survivor. It’s good, simple fun. It’s just that it’s tough to be too upbeat about a game that you might finish in a single sitting. If you like the idea of shooting aliens, and you don’t mind spending $20 on a 6-hour game, then by all means try it out. If you want a little more bang for your buck, then you’re probably better off trying something like Hellgate: London, which has a similar theme, but which is more polished and has much more in the way of lasting value (even without the subscription service).

„Shadowgrounds Survivor" hat viele kleine Macken und wird bei der Wahl zum Spiel des Jahres sicherlich keinen Blumentopf gewinnen. Und dennoch macht es enormen Spaß. Es ist eben wie ein altes paar Schuhe: Es macht von außen nicht mehr sonderlich viel her, passt aber wie angegossen und ist einfach tierisch entspannend und gemütlich.

Ursprünglich hatte ich mich auf das Spiel richtig gefreut. Das Endprodukt hinterlässt jedoch einen faden Beigeschmack. Die magere Story lässt sich mit "Töte viele Aliens" ausreichend zusammenfassen, die Waffen sind fast alle aus dem Vorgänger bekannt und die extrem kurze Spielzeit und der wieder mal fehlende Netzwerkmodus enttäuschen umso mehr. Immerhin waren auch die letzten beiden Kritikpunkte schon die größten Mankos am Vorgänger. 'Shadowgrounds Survivor' ist trotz dieser Versäumnisse ein gutes, effektvolles Ballerspiel geworden, insbesondere für Koop-Freunde mit viel Platz vor dem Schreibtisch. Nur währt das Vergnügen eben leider nicht allzu lange.

Retrogaming History (7 out of 10)

Tutto sommato mi sento di consigliarvi Shadowgrounds Survivor poiché l'unica differenza con i cugini First Person Shooter è il punto di vista. Onestamente però ho preferito il primo, che pian piano introduceva (meglio) tutti i mostri e le varie situazioni di gioco con specifici intermezzi, in questo “seguito” invece tutto è già svelato, probabilmente per la sua natura di spin-off. Io lo considererei come un’espansione a se stante del primo episodio. Fate così procuratevi il primo che vi introduce tutto per bene, e poi giocatevi questo secondo che è un ottima variante sul tema ed espande alcuni aspetti.

GBase - The Gamer's Base (7 out of 10)

Es ist nicht auf dem heutigen Stand der Technik, es hat keine innovative KI, keine umfangreiche Spieldauer, und erst recht keine tolle Geschichte zu bieten. Ja, Himmel, warum habe ich dann so viel Spass mit dem Test hier gehabt? Keine Frage, es gibt bessere Action-Spiele auf dem Markt. Aber gibt es auch bessere Ballerorgien für den mittleren Geldbeutel in diesem Stil? Nein. Wer auf unkomplizierte Action mit Starship Troopers-Flair Lust hat, kann zugreifen. Das Spielprinzip befriedigt die Lust auf blanke Ballerei, wie es frühere Top-Down-Shooter so herrlich konnten. Und dies in halbwegs gelungener Atmosphäre. Gut, für mich hätte es noch eine Spur gruseliger sein dürfen. Dafür aber lache ich herzlich, wenn ich innerhalb von wenigen Minuten knapp einhundert Aliens von ihrem traurigen Schicksal befreit habe. Ballerspass? Wird hier eindeutig geboten, in kurzer, aber knackiger Form!

The trouble is that Shadowgrounds was a game bursting with unrealised potential, and this sequel still leaves too much of that potential untouched. The continual lack of online play leaves a particularly obvious hole in the game's score sheet, since with some larger maps and more complex campaign objectives it has all the makings of a major cult hit. There are new features here - three characters to play as, some additional weapons - but despite marginal improvements the game is essentially the same as two years ago. Instead of taking things up a notch, it seems the developer seems happy to tread water. Shame.

Une fois encore, Frozenbyte parvient à nous scotcher à l'écran durant quelques heures d'action frénétique avec Shadowgrounds Survivor. Ce stand-alone dégrossit la pépite qui sommeillait dans le jeu original pour en révéler tout l'éclat. Certes, le joyau est encore un peu brut, mais il a déjà subi un beau polissage.

Synchronsprecher, die zeitweise klingen wie Sprechdurchfall, gehen halt gar nicht. Trotzdem ist Shadowgrounds Survivor keinesfalls schlecht – auch wenn die Kampagne maximal fünf Stunden dauert. Im kooperativen Modus mit bis zu drei Kumpel an einem PC zu daddeln, macht aber am meisten Laune .

For those who enjoy a bit of blasting and mindless action from the old school of gaming, Survivor is a decent purchase. It won’t bust up your computer and you can get a few hours of gameplay out of it before the repetition drives you round the bend.

Noch mal ziemlich genau das Gleiche wie im Vorgänger, dafür kürzer, blöder und anspruchsloser - wer genau soll das kaufen, Frozenbyte? Ich hab das Original damals gern gespielt, das Spielprinzip hielt ich für unverwüstlich. So kann man sich irren! Angeödet klicke ich mich durch die lustlos zusammengestückelten, schlecht ausbalancierten und nichtssagenden Stationspassagen. Shadowgrounds-Fans meiden den Nepp, Neulinge greifen zum Original - oder zur GameStar-Ausgabe 10/07. Da war das Spiel als Vollversion dabei.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault) ( )

Although I enjoyed playing through Shadowgrounds Survivor, I can’t give it a high overall score. As an add-on pack, it would’ve more than fulfilled my expectations, but as a stand-alone sequel, it’s way too similar to its predecessor to deserve praise. I love arcade shooters, but people who played the original Shadowgrounds have every right to expect something beyond “more of the same,” even from a low-priced budget title. Let’s hope that in the future Frozenbyte will use its creative potential and considerable talent to give us something really new.

Computer Bild Spiele (3.24 out of 6)

Alien-Horden zu bekämpfen ist weder neu noch originell. Und obwohl "Shadowgrounds - Survivor" nett aussieht, schöne Lichteffekte zaubert und Gegenstände den Naturgesetzen unterwirft, machen sich beim Spielen öde Stimmung und lähmende Langeweile breit. Der Funke will nicht überspringen. Allenfalls die Möglichkeit, den Helden aufzurüsten, ist eine willkommene Abwechslung - wie eine Oase in der Sahara. Mehr als "befriedigend" schlagen sich die drei Kämpfer auf Ganymed nicht durch.
