Unreal Tournament III is a powerhouse of a game and a real boon for the PS3, which is in dire need of some fantastic shooters. It won't be to everyone's tastes, but the combination of its old-school sensibilities and cutting edge looks provides some of the most eye-catching, visceral, fast twitch gaming you'll ever experience. Throw in the superb array of death-dealing weapons and the astonishing range of inconceivably well designed, gorgeous maps, and you've got a shooter that, in the online multiplayer arena, is hard to match and will last you indefinitely. As a gaming experience, unreal is probably the only way to describe it.

The only real downside to Unreal Tournament 3 is the fact that, for those used to playing the last PC game, this title is merely an update. Although it’s been four years since the last release in the series, the only major change is the maps and – for some PC users at least – this is sure to prove disappointing. But what console users have been crying out for is an online multiplayer first-person shooter that is explosive, compelling and has that pick-up-and-play feel. And Unreal Tournament 3 offers that and a whole lot more.

The score for Unreal Tournament III reflects an aggregation of all elements of gameplay I've covered in the foregoing, as well as the gravity of innovation in making PC mods accessible on a console title. What this numerical score can't possibly demonstrate, in the past several years of ever-better games across all genres, not a few of them arriving in recent months, Unreal Tournament III is the first title in a long time making me recall that this is why I long ago started loving games, compelling me to, almost literally, jump and down, and to keep me up playing late into the night and seduce me into a few morning matches before I sit down to work. Yes, it's that good, and, yes, it does so greatly transcend the mere sum of its fractions.

Whatever UTIII lacks in offerings right now (and I can't find one among them beyond stuff from older games), the mod community will add. If that doesn't demonstrate this whole "Game 3.0" concept perfectly, I don't know what does. Seriously, go buy it.

To wrap things up, if you can't tell by now, Unreal Tournament III is a blockbuster hit. It's exactly what we were hoping for it to be; a brilliantly executed arena-based first-person shooter, with a plethora of depth, speed, and a virtually infinite scope on replay value. User-created content will drive this game and its online community for years to come, just as it has on the PC. It is visually stunning to behold, with superb texture detail everywhere you look. It allows for mouse and keyboard gameplay, and features a sublime online facet. Unreal Tournament III is the pinnacle of first-person shooters. Others: take note.

The real draw of UT3 is in its promising future. Extra maps and mutators are one thing. How will fans respond when total conversions start to pop up, delivering a brand new experience within the same game they purchased back during the 2007 holiday season? It's a brave new world now for console gamers, and they have the brilliant minds over at Epic Games to thank for it.

While UT3 isn't going to reinvent the FPS wheel, it does supply what has been greatly missing in FPS as of late, which is just a straight forward, fun as hell, experience that is endless as long as you have friends to play with. This is old school shooting at its best with a brand new coat of paint to enjoy. Fans of UT or even Quake with realize what they've been missing for a couple years now and will be happy that it is has returned in its purest form. UT3 is pure bliss.

Unreal Tournament 3 is a great benchmark for all other online console shooters; it does everything to the highest possible standard and never drops the ball. It has all of the qualities a top notch PC title will have, but without the high price of the newest possible graphics card to enjoy it. The only area the consoles lose out to the PC is in the modding where gamers will submit their own maps, but I am sure Epic will give us some updates in the future to improve this side of things. So if you are craving for a frag fest, this is definitely the game for you.

At the end of the day Unreal Tournament 3 is exactly what you would expect from the series. The fast paced action is still among the best available and the visuals set a new bar for shooters. PC gamers may balk at the lack of features out of the box, but PS3 owners looking for a great online shooter will have a hard time finding a better option this winter. If you are looking solely for a solo experience UT 3 will likely leave you wanting more, but if its multi-player action you desire Unreal Tournament 3 is among the best the year has to offer.

I had my reservations right up until release of Unreal Tounament 3 given that I've had the PC version since launch last year, but I'm happy to report that this is one of the greatest shooters even on PC and the PS3 version lacks but a few details. Unfortunately, as it stands, I fear that its online life may be limited, especially if Haze hits shelves before this patch comes out, but with Epic promising it will be here ASAP, I'd still recommend this shooter to anyone with a PS3, with the exception of those who need realism in their games.

Wow! Kaufen!

The score, then. Jim went for eight on PC. I'm going for nine on PS3. I could fob you off and claim this is because the context is different. In fact, I probably ought to, because it's true: Team Fortress 2 isn't as effective in the PS3's slightly disappointing Orange Box release, although it's still a better multiplayer game outside of the platform question, and the alternatives (Resistance, most notably) don't do as much as well as this does.

If you've never played Unreal Tournament before, this is a must-own game on PS3. It's still the most frantic, engrossingly intense first-person shooter formula out there and even after eight years still proves to be wildly entertaining. It certainly helps that Epic has done a terrific job of making this game run on PS3, as well as provide tons of tweaking extras like server filters, customization options, and input alternatives that you typically don't see in a console game. The interface for accessing all these options and browsing servers may be a little clunky, but that hardly diminishes the unique brand of gameplay UT offers.

Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 is easily the closest a console has ever come to capturing the look and feel of a true "twitch" FPS. Those familiar with the series may miss a few of the gametypes from previous installments. Those that are playing UT for the first time get to experience a series that has loosely defined and inspired the FPS genre for years; and without the requisite additional PC upgrades. UT3 is a return to form for the UT series. Epic has trimmed the fat from its flagship series, and all that's left is lean and mean, pure UT.

If you’re looking for an excellent multiplayer first-person shooter for your PS3, go and buy Unreal Tournament III right now. Nothing else on the platform can touch it at this stage. On the PC, where you have a lot more options, things are a little more complicated. Just keep in mind that whatever version you buy, you’re doing it to play against other humans online. If you have no friends and no broadband connection then UT III will be a snore. When twitching out against opponents around the globe it can be as addictive, and deep, as video games come.

At the end of the day, this is a game that succeeds by its ability to make a new home for itself on the consoles - the PS3 in particular. Although we have yet to see how easily the mod community will be able to hawk their wares, all other aspects of the game have made the crossing well. It says a lot about the game, that even with stiff competition from the likes of Call of Duty it is still a viable option for some PS3 first-person shooting action. Were it to include a killer campaign this would be a game that is hard to beat - as it stands it is still an impressive first outing on the PS3.

Viele alte Maps in neuem Gewand lassen absolutes Nostalgiefeeling aufkommen, ohne anzuöden. With all that said, the main reason I am captivated by UT3 is because how much it differs from shooters currently on the next-generation consoles. Too many shooters are still stuck in World War II or trying to “advance” to modern combat, while not enough are cranking up the speed and providing thrilling action to boot. If you have enjoyed the previous installments, then I have no doubt that Unreal Tournament 3 will be a fine purchase this holiday season.

Unreal Tournament 3 has been a long time in the making; however, despite the wait, the game proves that the franchise is still one of the most exhilarating first-person shooters available. While best known for its online play, UT3 is fun in any context - even offline - taking bot-infested battles to the next level. The developer's creativity really shines through in the various game modes, weapon and vehicle designs, and control scheme. The only real fault here is that the game can sometimes feel like a retread. There haven't been many changes to the core gameplay over the years, so if you're looking for something radically different, you may not find that here. Otherwise, the numerous polished facets of Unreal Tournament 3 add up to a fantastic multiplayer experience that is currently unparalleled on the PlayStation 3.

While the 360 has dominated the FPS genre with titles like Bioshock and Halo 3, the PS3 gets a sturdy, well built and powerful timed exclusive in Unreal Tournament 3. It lacks a few things that would really have set it apart from most other games, like the first cross-platform game on the PS3 and a complete lack of a single player campaign like Warhawk. However, on top of the polish, options and seasoned gameplay, you have one of the fastest growing multiplayer titles on the PSN, as players fall back to what works, not just what’s new. In reality, there's very little explicitly wrong with the game, as it's all a matter of perspective. It will depend on how fast you like your shooters, how fresh or how the console caters for it. However, the clincher for the PS3 version is that it's leader in it's small market, as there is very little that can compete with it and style of gameplay stands out as unique on the platform. The game does demand human competition to be of any worth and shouldn't be considered otherwise, but given the quality of play and the quality of the port from the PC, it’s definitely worth checking out for anyone who likes their multiplayer shooters to be fast and furious.

The basis of the game is this - you enter a confined area filled with respawning points for weapons, ammo, health packs, and ... well, you. The goal is to kill more than you are killed. Everything else is incidental. The game is gorgeous, sounds great, and plays fantastic. The only problem - it feels like a tuned-up version of UT2004. Again, that isn't a bad thing, but the gameplay really doesn't particularly stand out in this year of spectacular shooters. Still, for solid multiplayer fun it is hard to beat! Great to see new versions of classic maps too, now if only epic would bring back the Assault maps from the original too.

There are both good and bad parts to the Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 port. If you’ve never played a UT game before you are likely to play the game for a while, but those familiar with the series will be wondering where all the new features went. Epic have a winner in this franchise but next time they head back to the Unreal Tournament universe a lot will have to change, otherwise the series will be stale and the PC and PS3 will lose yet another top franchise to stale gameplay.

Unreal Tournament 3 is a lot like Call of Duty 4 in many ways. Both these games are lacking in the single player mode compared to Bioshock and their online modes are not nearly as good as Halo 3. I am not saying that both these games are bad because they’re both good. UT3 is one of those games that is nice to have around since it is fast and action packed. You can easily put this game on and play a few online matches within a few minutes. If you want a game that shows off your Playstation 3 then Unreal Tournament 3 is the perfect choice.

Sadly, Unreal Tournament 3 is not strong enough on the merits of its offline gameplay to provide hours of entertainment; after playing through a few missions in the Campaign mode or playing against bots, you start wanting to play against others. Unfortunately, my personal experience and other reports from around the web indicate that lag and connectivity issues will put more than a slight damper on the online gameplay, the single-most important aspect of Unreal Tournament 3.

So does Unreal Tournament III make the cut? Yes, since the fact that this game has so much going for it in the multiplayer department makes it easy to overlook the lag and poor single campaign, which in all honesty could have been dropped. I played this game religiously online and loved the visuals. It also shows what consoles can do if the developers put their minds to it, with lots of mods and no load times. Forget the campaign mode and get online!

I really wanted to give Unreal Tournament III a higher score – in many respects, the game is deserving of one, as it has a lot going for it. Even when you take away the annoyingly constrained story of the single-player campaign, you’re still left with a fantastic-looking first-person shooter with some incredibly addictive gameplay that is bound to be kept alive for months, if not years, thanks to the mod support alone. However, in an online-heavy game like this, such rampant connection problems – from dropped or timed-out connections to lag to attempts to connect me to games I couldn’t play...repeatedly – truly forced my hand. Should Epic and Midway (or even Sony, if they’re the ones responsible) ever get around to fixing those issues – and perhaps even adding some clan support or cross-platform play – then I’ll consider an addendum to this. But, for now, this is how it stands: close, but no cigar.

Epic scores big time on the PS3 with Unreal Tournament 3. Fast-paced online gameplay that’s addictive and massively fun makes this one a worthwhile addition to your library. The single player isn’t great, and it doesn’t do anything to reinvent the wheel, but it’s not like that’s a big deal; the gameplay is good times and if you’re at all an FPS fan, this is one game you don’t want to pass up.

I understand that this formula has worked for Unreal in the past, but c’mon, evolve a little will ya? Let the gameplay match the visuals in quality. It is fun for a while, but in the end you are no better off than when you started and that's depressing. If Unreal could implement some of the gameplay features seen in many other modern shooters, you would have a very strong and rewarding multiplayer experience.

More of The Same, But Not Enough

The Good
Unreal Tournament has been a good friend to me, ever since Epic released the first game. I always preferred it over Quake 3, mostly because of its more interesting game modes. I especially loved the almost “story” assault maps.

Then, in UT2003, things changed a bit. The game became a bit more like its namesake, a sporting event almost, with double jumps and unlockable powerups. Sadly, Epic ditched my beloved Assault maps, but added Onslaught mode. Onslaught was basically a node-based conquest gametype, which often included large maps and vehicles. While different from Assault, I still enjoyed UT2003 and 2004, despite their extreme simplicity. They spoke to a part of me that enjoyed picking up the old mouse and keyboard and winning two matches of Onslaught (on Torlan, of course) against the competent but ultimately inferior computer.

Does UT3 hold up to its un-ambitious yet entertaining ancestors? For the most part it does. There are new vehicles, powerups, maps, character models, and where there aren’t new features, old ones have been updated. Again, instead of Onslaught we now have the Assault mode, which adds objectives across much larger maps but still retains that Onslaught feel. The graphics are extremely beautiful. They may look like all other Unreal 3 engine games, but that isn’t a bad thing.

The weapons are as satisfying as ever, the flack cannon and shock rifle still being my favorites. There are a ton of new vehicles, some fun, some not so much fun. The giant Darkwalker, which is basically a tripod from the War of the Worlds movie, is appropriately ominous and unwieldy. There is a new Warthog-like small truck, a creepy spider-like vehicle, and of course the useful (but ludicrous) hover boards. By far my favorite vehicle was the Viper, a ground-hugging fighter that could be turned into a dumb-fire projectile, ejecting its pilot and speeding toward a target.

Besides weapons and vehicles, UT3 boasts a ton of maps, each sporting that UT vibe, and of course the characters’ traditional look and sound. It is strangely comforting to hear the old dumb insults that the bots delivered (“You be dead!” is sadly absent), and all of the character animations are competent. The classic UT mutators show up as well, and with the promise of new and user made mutators on the way, there won’t be a dearth of combat options anytime soon.

Multiplayer is solid, and as mentioned above for us PS3 owners are in luck. User created maps and content are already on their way. This kind of support really makes me want to give Epic and Sony a pat on the back, and will extend the lifespan of UT# on my PS3 by months

The Bad
Many of the things I just lauded have their share of problems. There may be a lot of maps, but I must admit, I am getting tired of UT maps. They come in two varieties: crazy space station/plant/factory/city and bizarre “ancient” temples of various “ethnic” backgrounds. It all looks like The Matrix and Stargate. Seriously, I have blasted through so many Future refineries, it makes my head hurt.

Again, while the new Warfare mode may include my favorite type of vehicle-based combat, I really miss the Bombing Run game mode. It was basically like some bizarre form of deathmatch soccer, and it was amazingly fun.

Despite all of the options I just mentioned, UT3 is starting to feel a bit stale. Unlike COD4, it hasn’t yet figured out how to reinvent itself. There may be tons of options, but to be honest, we’ve seen most of them before. Having 15 vehicles does not mean your game is the best. They have to be fun! The reason I love Halo 3 is (among other reasons) because I can have fun on any of the vehicles. In UT3, I hate being stuck with the human humvee type vehicle.

The plethora of characters would be nice, if they weren’t all awful. The single player story is hilarious; they’ve tried to weave respawning and flags into the plot. Trust me, after the first mission, when you’ve killed your sister 15 times, and listened to her taunt you about it, you will not be immersed in their world. Oh, and as pointed out by PA, Malcolm’s B-boy dialogue is terribly amusing. The only other black character in the game is named Othello
. What? The guy named Priest keeps on intoning faux-biblical stuff over dead bodies. Is this really the highest level of cultural relevancy and intertextuality that games can reach? A black guy named Othello? A vaguely religious guy named Priest? Please.

The Bottom Line
I really wanted to like UT3 more than I did. It uses the same formula UT has always used, and that was enough for me during the first 3 games. This time though, I can’t muster up the will to care about their paper-thin characters, bad writing and cookie-cutter game design. You know you’re coasting when the biggest difference in the next game in a franchise is the graphics. This is a fun game, and for newcomers to the series (especially on consoles) you owe it to yourself to go buy this game. It has a lot of content and a lot of staying power. If you’re a veteran of the series, think twice before buying UT3. You might want to wait until Epic actually evolves this game for the next-gen consoles.
