Mistwalker should be proud that they created an ambitious traditional role-playing game at the level of Lost Odyssey. Lost Odyssey touches the gamer on many different levels with its caring storyline, explosive battles and metamorphosing plot developments. The presentation in the graphics and audio help put the whole game together creating a beautiful amalgamation showcase some best talent seen in both areas. If you’re a fan of traditional role-playing games, or love games with an endearing story then you will likely fall in love with the dynamic intimacy Lost Odyssey provides. Despite being challenged because of its traditional roots, Lost Odyssey embraces them and turns on a memorable gaming experience that will be remembered for years to come.

There is a good reason why it took a little longer than it should have for this review to get up on the site. It is really hard to put the controller down. Even with the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (see Super Smash Bros. Brawl review) I am still putting this game on. The story is deep, character development is strong and the music is beyond good. If you are an RPG fan then buy this game right now!

I know some people will hate this score, as it's up there with Gears of War and BioShock. However, you have to take into consideration its score against other RPGs. Blue Dragon got a 90, Eternal Sonata a 92. This game is much better than both. I never score a game against something of a different genre, and neither should you. Plain and simple, this is the best RPG I've played in a long, long time and by far the best available for the 360 at the moment. I did really like Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon was a breath of fresh air after the 360's earlier efforts, but they somewhat pale in the greatness that is Lost Odyssey. Amazing graphics, audio, gameplay and story. Really nothing more you could ask for in a game.

With everything considered, is Lost Odyssey the best RPG experience on the market? If it isn’t it’s making a strong push towards being one, at least being the best on the Xbox 360. It is however near the top as far as an intimate storyline and a true JRPG. Lost Odyssey is definitely not a game for the pick-up-and-play gamer, it is for the committed gamer who has a true understanding of what a JRPG is supposed to be. And ultimately, it makes for a lovely gaming experience that you will always remember.

But they were the only part of the game I'd use words like that to describe AND they are optional, so I'm not going to complain too much! Lost Odyssey is one of the finest J-RPGs I've played in years, combining solid mechanics with an unforgettable story that's light years beyond the generic cookie-cutter plots I almost expect to see from this genre. Heck, even if you're not a fan of this sort of game, I'd still advise you to suck it up and play it just to read the "A Thousand Years of Dreams" collection.

What you'll find here is a mix between the PS1-era Final Fantasy titles, the Shadow Hearts games (thanks to former Nautilus employees moving to Feel+), and a perfectly crafted old-school JRPG with high production values. It may be as close to a Square Enix epic as Xbox owners will get, but in some regards it outclasses them, and that's something that should not be missed.

With its meandering story and limited innovations, Lost Odyssey feels more workmanlike than inspired. But there’s no denying that it’s an exceptionally well-made game, and that Mistwalker has delivered again on its mission of producing traditional Japanese RPGs with epic amounts of content and next-gen production values. If you’re expecting a revolution, you may come away disappointed. But if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll appreciate Lost Odyssey’s exceptional craftsmanship from start to finish.

There are a number of gameplay flaws, particularly in the areas of difficulty and monotony (turn-based games are quite dull when compared to their more modern kin), but underneath it all there's still a lot to love about the title. If you are in the mood for an epic, old-school, meaningful RPG, then it's hard to go wrong with Lost Odyssey.

In many ways Lost Odyssey is a very traditional console RPG. If you’re like us you’ll certainly have no problem with that. In fact, a traditional console RPG very much in the same vein as the Final Fantasy series is just what many 360 owners wanted and Lost Odyssey truly delivers. It also has a few unique twists of its own that work well. It’s a shame that there are some frame rate dips and frequent (although never long) load times to put up with but on the whole the quality of the storyline and the overall quality of the game more than compensates for any technical niggles. Lost Odyssey is definitely a game that every RPG enthusiast should play and it’s definitely one of the best Xbox 360 RPGs to date.

eh tiba-tiba pas masuk map baru, kita dibantai abis.

To bring things to a close, it seems like a bit of a cop out to end on the suggestion that if you like JRPG's then you'll like this otherwise don't bother, but it's genuinely the best advice I can offer. This is a beautiful, involving, epic example of its type but those for whom the genre holds no interest aren't going to be converted by a game that rarely offers the innovation you may have been expecting and conforms to more of the old frustrations than it probably should. Speaking personally I loved it, which explains the big score, but I understand there will be those of you who fail to see where the attraction is and nothing I can say will change that.

Mistwalker seemed to be nothing more than a hype machine by Microsoft to gain some Japanese support. Blue Dragon was okay, but ultimately boring and forgettable, while Lost Odyssey borders on the excellence we have seen from Sakaguchi in the past. If the gameplay could have evolved a tad bit compared to what we’ve seen before it would have been a nearly flawless game. The characters alone make Lost Odyssey an adventure worth having. At no point will this be a boring game for any fan of the genre, and it’s a game that really could push Xbox 360 sales overseas. It really is an absolute delight and a real surprise.

If you’re a JRPG fan, Lost Odyssey should be a no-brainer. It’s an amazing looking JRPG that has a stellar development team doing what they’ve done best for years – creating a compelling gameplay experience around a solid storyline. The collection of ‘A Thousand Years of Dreams’ is a real step up for ‘video game literature’ and worth checking out. If you’re not a JRPG fan, there’s probably nothing here that’s going to sway your mind. The combat is a bit more player-inclusive than the standard JRPG, with the addition of the ring system, but it’s still a far cry from
well, from something like Far Cry with its constant action. There’s a solid story starring great characters (maybe minus the children) and great artwork – backed by stellar music by one of the industry’s best
but it’s still a JRPG. If you’re a fan, you should already have given it a chance. If you’re not, you probably never will be.

Drawn-out cut-scenes detach players from the action, but the written word requires the use of imagination and introspection, forcing you to explore Kaim's past experiences - stories that revolve around such diverse topics as unjust imprisonment, racism, and suicide. In fact, I'd like to see these refreshingly adult themes expanded on further in a sequel. Just one request, Mr. Sakaguchi: Leave the kids at home next time, OK?

All told, Lost Odyssey doesn't have that many big weaknesses. The major "problem" with the game is that it doesn't do enough to push the genre forward. Lost Odyssey suffers because not only has it not taken the genre forward, but it also could be argued that it hasn't even kept up with the advancements that have been made in the genre over the last several years. It makes a few intelligent tweaks to the established formulas and offers players a great cast of characters to feel for, but it's not a game experience that you haven't played the primary elements of hundreds of times before. That's only a problem for those who are growing tired of the traditional JRPG formula or never bought into to begin with, but there's no doubt the genre is on the verge of extinction on this side of the Pacific and strict adherence to tradition is not like to turn any fortunes around.

One thing’s for sure, this is a game you can’t simply hire for the weekend. If you’re willing to take the jump though, there’s a lot here to really like. Here’s hoping the Japanese think so too, so Microsoft might actually get a leg up over there.

Lost Odyssey on the whole is a beautiful, emotional epic that is more than worthwhile of your time and effort. It proves that there is still life in the old RPG design yet, and although the game merely modernizes a traditional system, the concepts present in the game are brilliant innovations. It's a shame that a well designed game succumbs to its own imagination and ambition - but this is exactly the case with Lost Odyssey, due to some almost pointless aspects of gameplay. Having said that, it's still an incredible game and brilliant catalogue filler for the 360 RPG. The emotion produced by playing this game makes it all the more worthwhile, and Lost Odyssey is certainly up there with the best of the genre.

And that, really, is the reason that Lost Odyssey manages to overcome its many flaws. If you just fundamentally don't like the genre, then there's a chance that Lost Odyssey will fail to convert you. If you're too attached to the sorts of innovation introduced by the likes of Final Fantasy XII, there's a chance that it's just too old-fashioned for your cutting-edge tastes. Loading times, while never excessive, are a bit on the long side, and the game's adherence to the basics of the genre will be off-putting for some. The immersion is there, the gameplay can be fun, but overall, Lost Odyssey fails to "go the distance" as a modern-day RPG. Hell, some Final Fantasy games have played like mediocre Final Fantasy games, and if you’re a 360 owner who loves classic RPGs you’re going to want to play it. It looks great, and even if it isn’t the best role-playing game ever it falls well short of the worst. If the RPG scene was as ripe with kickass games as the shooter market is it would be easy to suggest giving Lost Odyssey a pass, but given the dearth of quality role-playing titles it really is a must have for RPG fans. Its flaws are at times almost tangible, but it remains mostly enjoyable despite them and it is a substantial chunk of gaming to sink your teeth into. As a last hoorah to the turn-based JPRG (though, I hope this certainly won’t be the last one of this magnitude), Lost Odyssey accomplishes what it sets out to do. Nothing that it does, apart from its high production values, are examples of how to do the genre complete justice, but for a first outing for Microsoft, it’s more than satisfactory. Though Lost Odyssey won’t change your mind about turn-based JRPGs, it fills the void of the genre with a well-paced and pleasing aesthetic, and a healthy dose of nostalgia.

I’ve been looking forward to this game for two years (since back when GameStop’s release calendar accidentally listed it as a January 2006 release), and while I’m certainly satisfied with what I’ve got as an avid RPG fan, I’m not in any way impressed with this effort. While many of the problems that I have with the game recede around the middle of the second disc, at that point you’ve already suffered through fifteen hours of below average role playing game, which makes recommending this game to anybody that wouldn’t be interested in it to begin with a lot like suggesting that unanesthetized bowel surgery doesn’t hurt so much after the first six hours. If you’re a fan of classic-style RPGs looking for a fix, you could do worse than Lost Odyssey, but there’s no reason for anybody who wouldn’t otherwise be interested in the genre to spend any time at all with this game.

When you're saddling up to sink over 50 hours into an RPG, you need an epic story that will sustain your interest over the long haul. Unfortunately, an affecting collection of anecdotes isn't enough on it's own to elevate any game from merely worthwhile to truly memorable, not eve one with high production values and a pedigree as storied as Lost Odyssey's.

Hironobu Sakaguchi created many of the genre conventions that define the Japanese RPG so it should come as no surprise the much of Lost Odyssey smacks of "been there and done that." The main story is forgettable, the lack of combat information is disappointing, and the cutscenes are numerous. But through it all I was having fun in battle and looked forward to finding each additional heart-wrenching memory.

We have immense respect for what Lost Odyssey tries to do: be a back-to-basics JRPG with modern technological trimmings on the 360. Unfortunately, it's less a celebration of what made older RPGs great and more a crude relic of their past. When we were a half-dozen hours in, we had hope that the combat mechanics would gain some depth and that the storytelling would find its rhythm. We're still ready to forgive the technical issues, if only Lost Odyssey could come together as a game. 360 owners desperate for something turn-based with magic in it can turn to Lost Odyssey for some comfort, but for the majority of genre fans that time would be better spent replaying one of the classics from which Lost Odyssey draws so heavily.

Can You Help Me? I Seem To Have Misplaced My Odyssey.

The Good
I have a love\hate relationship with Japanese RPGS. As there are many times were the latest string of games hold little to no interest for me. During these times I usually just retreat to RPGS of days gone by that I have enjoyed. A list that may include any of the Phantasy Star, Shining Force, or Dragon Quest games. Among others.

However the current state of JRPGS does hold great interest for me. With Square- Enix, finally releasing the Dragon Quest remakes.(No more having to rely on ROMS
yeah!-MM-) As well as all the announced JRPGS for the Xbox 360. One of the keys to my renewed interest comes from JRPG newcomer, Mistwalker. Although, “newcomer” may be a misnomer. Seeing as the studio was founded by Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi. Composer, Nobuo Umeatsu, has also joined up. Their goal, according to them anyhow, is to create unique JRPGS, for the 360 and DS. Sounds good on paper but can they actually pull it off?

Who wants to live forever?

Lost Odyssey tells the tale of Kaim Argonar, you see Kaim is immortal. And not unlike The Highlander, he has been wandering around the world for the last 1,000 years. He has forgotten much of his life, when he can remember he dislikes what is recalled, as his past is far from pleasant. However like many RPG protagonists, his past is about to catch up with him.

The game begins quite grandly with Kaim, embroiled in battle. Two nations wage war. All of the sudden, a cataclysm erupts. All the combatants are killed, except that is, for Kaim. From here he is assigned a simple quest, with fellow immortal Seth, she too cannot recall much of her past, and they are joined by Jansen, a mortal magic user and a bit of a rouge. (Who sounds kind of like Bruce Campbell.-MM-)

Furthermore, the world has gone through a magic industrial revolution. And now magic and magic using machines help ease the lives of people every where.

When the power hungry Gongora, strives to rule the world things get more complicated. Along the way Kaim will meet many others. Some immortal, some not. His memories will return, after which point there is no turning back.

There are nine party members in Lost Odyssey, and you can form a party of five. Overall the characters are interesting, and certainly varied. Some more so than others. I particularly liked the grizzled pirate Sed. What with his boss rifles, and Captain Nemo esque ship. And Jansen provides an excellent foil for the oft dower Kaim. And his antics are often amusing.

Each party member also has there own side-quests, which was nice. Some of the situations can seem trite. And I often had a hard time caring about this thing and that. However where the game succeeds on emotional story telling is in the form of the 1,000 Years of Memories.

During the course of the game, certain situations unlock memories. These take the form of text based short stories. And evolve Kaim’s past. These little vignettes can actually be quite moving. And I am not a man who is easily moved.

I’ve got mad skills
.

The Gameplay is Lost Odyssey, is traditional. That means random battles and turn based combat system. However I found that combat could be quite rewarding. This is thanks to the skill system of the game.

Mortals learn skills by level. Immortals however have to learn them either by skill linking with a mortal, this means that a mortal has to be in your active party, they cannot be on reserve. You set the skill you wish to learn and then, when you win battles, you gain EXP, cash, and more importantly AP, or ability points. Gain enough and your immortal gains the skill. These skills are then equipped in skill slots. Which can be increased up to a maximum of 30 by using “slot seeds”. Or by learning Skill Slot + skills. Immortals can also learn skill by equipping and learning from accessories. These tend to be passive skills like fire resistance, magic absorb, and the like. Where as skills from mortals include black and white magic, as well as spirit and composite magic.

This make combat feel rewarding as you continue to master skills, and try out your new ones. Furthermore there are achievements more mastering each party members skills.

Vae Victus!

In LO, you equip weapons, accessories, and rings. Rings really only come into play with fighters. A ring gives extra power to your weapons. Like fire power, or increased chance of getting a critical hit. During combat a ring appears around any enemy, hitting the trigger at the right time enables a perfect, good, or poor attack. Being able to do perfects can be quite handy. Especially during boss fights.

Furthermore, turn order also comes into play. Many JRPGS have been doing this lately ever since Grandia.

More interesting is the way magic is utilized. There is black magic and white magic. In addition there is spirit magic. Which focuses of non-elemental, and booster magic. Lastly there is composite magic. Which is really cool. It combines different spells to create one more powerful version. Like All-flare. All-resurrect. And All-Generatus, which fully heals the party, and regenerates every turn.

Also in battle some spells take longer to cast that others. This function kind of reminded me of Western RPGS such as Return to Krondor. Casting time can be reduced with spells. Or increased by being attacked. You can also learn skills to reduce casting time.

Party formation also plays a more obvious role is LO. In the form of the GC gauge. The gauge adds up all the HP of the front row fighters. The higher the GC the more protected your back row becomes. Causing less damage if and when attacked. Enemies also have GC. Making it impossible to take out the back row until the front is neutralized. There are also special attacks and magic that can raise and lower it. In the end it helps make battles more strategic. More so when combined with the spell casting time.

There is much to do in this game. From side boss fights, to treasure hunting, and collecting all the 1,000 years of memories, to name a few. And it took this gamer 90+ hours to do it all. Of course that is because I am a completenist. This however kills any replay value, for me anyhow.

Sound + Vision

The graphics in Lost Odyssey are amazing. No surprise seeing as the game uses the Unreal Engine, the same engine that powered both Gears Of War, and Bioshock. To name just a few. And if you have the means you have to play this game in HD. It looks stunning in 1080p. Everything looks crisp and the detail on the main characters is astounding.

The towns and dungeons look great as well. And the world is quite rich in detail.

The voice acting is top-notch. With many skilled voice actors lending there talent, to make the characters come alive. The only down side is that the game is not in full voice acting, only during cut scenes. And in battle do they speak, the rest is in text.

The sound effects are good not great, like in most RPGS. Nothing to write home about, as it were.

The music is either hit of miss. The world map music is beautifully composed at first. But then turns from Chinese violins, to this bizarre rock guitar rift. It makes me wonder what Mr. Umeatsu was thinking. And wonder at his credibility. Also there are two tracks with lyrics. Interestingly enough they are sung by 80’s pop star and Planescape: Torment voice actor, Sheena Easton.

The Bad
Why is 2008 am I fighting in random battles? A game convention devised in 1988? It makes little sense.

And how could they not fit full voice acting of 4 DVD ROMS? When Shenmue did it in 2001, and Ultima IX did do in 1999.

While overall I liked the game, some situations in it were just idiotic. And had me scoffing.

The seems a bit sexist at times as well. I do realize that what is considered sexist in Japan varies to that of other places in the world. But when all the female characters have huge tits, that often look as if they are about to flop out of there tops, it just seems wrong. Sexy perhaps to most males. It gets more absurd when one of the women has to expose her double D size breasts, to prove she is who she claims to be.

There is also one side quest area that seemed, to be designed by a moron. It is supposed to be an ancient ruin, yet how the inhabitants got around it mind boggling. Who would build such a monstrosity?

The ending was somewhat disappointing and left a few things unresolved. And quite frankly felt like a cop out.

The world of Lost Odyssey, often seems rich with detail. Yet in one huge mistake seems dubious. You see they neglected to give a name to the world in which the game is set. SO they always have to say the world this and the world that. It is highly dubious. When most of the game is broken down in to towns and regions, all of which have names and histories.

And some of the regions mentioned in the 1,000 Years of Memories, are never seen in the game, which fails to add up.

The game also reuses many things from Blue Dragon. Like spell names. And the every so annoying foe the Kelelon. These silly looking foes are some of the most annoying monsters in any RPG.

And the recycling of names seems more that a bit lazy to this reviewer.

The Bottom Line
Mistwalker has hinted at making Lost Odyssey a franchise. Which is good as it has much potential.

In the end Lost Odyssey, is a great game. And for me and Xbox 360 owners the future looks bright for JRPGS. Hell it may already be here, with Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata joining the ranks. And with all the Western RPGS the Xbox 360 just may offer the best of both worlds when it comes to gaming.
