Age of Conan is a benchmark MMO. It has some tweaking yet to do, but the first 20 levels are terrific fun. The combat offers something fresh, the visuals are appealing, the game is both challenging and fun. Yes, there are some elements that need to be addressed, but this game is on the right track. Those considering stepping into the game should be aware of the system requirements and the personal requirements to handle a mature-rated game. But in the first 20 levels of this game, one thing is very apparent, AoC has raised the bar.

Age of Conan serves up satisfying action and a style all its own in an MMORPG package that's hard to resist - as long as you meet the system requirements, that is. It won't put WoW out of business, but then again, nothing will for a long time, and that doesn't mean this isn't a great game with tons of appeal and a hopefully more mature audience. The future is always uncertain for any game going head-to-head against a Blizzard title, butFuncom has put forth the best effort yet and they deserve any amount of success they can carve for themselves.

Wer actionreiche Kämpfe mag, über ein entsprechendes PC-System verfügt und über 18 Jahre ist, kann also getrost zugreifen. World of Warcraft bekommt endlich einen würdigen Konkurrenten.

Age of Conan does all of the major things right. Like any MMO in its early days, Age of Conan has had its share of technical hiccups. Funcom has been working hard to iron out problems as they arise. Updates have been coming out nearly every day since the servers went online. It will be interesting to see how things develop after six months or so, but as it stands, Age of Conan is off to a great start and it can only get better from here.

Well that's up to you and the 30 days you get with the game should be plenty of time to figure that out.

Nichtsdestotrotz macht das Spiel Spaß! Ich finde es super, dass ich der Held bin. Ganz wie in Guild Wars erzählt das Spiel eine Geschichte, die mich betrifft und mich nicht zu einem weiteren Abenteurer abstempelt, der eben auch hier herumläuft. Die Tatsache, dass das Spiel noch am Anfang seiner Entwicklung ist und fast jedes MMORPG ein Bananenprodukt ist (es reift beim Kunden), nehme ich die Zukunftspläne von Funcom zur Kenntnis und werde mit meiner Gilde weiter am Städtebau tüfteln und den Story-Modus ruhen lassen, bis die Updates erschienen sind - man hat schließlich große Erwartungen.

Ich stimme mit den vielen Meinungen, die ich im Ingame-Chat sammeln konnte, überein: „Age of Conan macht einfach viel Spaß, ist aber längst kein fertiges Spiel." Funcom soll es jetzt bitte, bitte nicht versaubeuteln und für ordentliche Nachbesserung sorgen. Auf keinen Fall darf man sich auf den Lorbeeren der bislang verkauften Spiele-Exemplare ausruhen. Wenn Sie den Test lesen, sind vielleicht schon etliche der erwähnten Fehler behoben, sind 30 Tage freie Spielzeit um. Erst dann wissen wir, wie viele Spieler bereit sind, monatliche Gebühren für die wohl tollste Fantasy-Baugrube der Onlinewelt zu zahlen.

In the end, Funcom did well, but only time will tell if it will stand up to World of Warcraft and those MMORPG’s on the horizon, from Warhammer, to the mysterious Bioware MMORPG and the host of Asian MMORPG’s. The time I spent playing the game was enjoyable and as this being an ever changing MMORPG there’s never enough time to see everything or typing space to describe everything. Be warned it does make full use of the mature rating, from the combat, social interacting, to topless females. As with most MMORPG’s they are hard to give a grade, since they are ever changing and dependent on the player’s computer hardware. That being said Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is a decent game.

In der Summe ist es für mich das beste MMO seit langem und das liegt zu einem grossen Teil am Kampfsystem sowie daran, dass man sich wieder ordentlich prügeln darf und mit dem Gegner böse und gute Worte austauschen kann. So entstehen Feind- und Freundschaften, und nur so beginnt ein MMO zu leben. Für mich ist der Funktionsumfang, gemessen an einem Ultima Online, immer noch viel zu klein. Einiges hätten die Entwickler auf jeden Fall besser machen können. Dennoch macht es mir riesigen Spass und ich bin sehr gespannt, wie sich das Spiel weiterentwickeln wird. Also runter mit den Rüben, bevor die Streitaxt Rost ansetzt!

In Age of Conan Funcom has created a thoroughly enjoyable online RPG. The game is a good balance of single player campaign and multiplayer gameplay meaning players are never short of quests to complete. The control method used is intuitive and combat entertaining though a little too random on earlier levels. The game will however benefit from the numerous patches and expansions it will receive over the coming months and years and hopefully these will balance out some of the more frustrating quests and banish the outstanding bugs. In the end, any game succeeds or fails on its ability to draw the consumer back for more and despite the minor flaws Age of Conan has so far left me consistently wanting to achieve the next level, or complete the next quest... speaking of which, time to fit in a little more game time...

I would still recommend buying Age of Conan if you're after a new MMO. It is great fun despite its quirks and flaws, just don't try rushing your way through the levels too quickly. Take your time, getting there is half the journey as they say, and don't expect a polished final product like World of Warcraft, it's still a work in progress but will hopefully develop into a great alternative to Blizzard's opus.

Mein Testausflug in die Age of Conan-Welt war eine echte emotionale Achterbahnfahrt. Vom Anfang begeistert, von den Aufgaben zwischen Stufe 20 und 30 gelangweilt und dann wieder begeistert von meinem ersten Instanzbesuch. Die Liste ließe sich beliebig fortsetzen. Dennoch ist die aktuelle Fassung von AoC keinen Deut schlechter als die World of Warcraft-Version am Veröffentlichungstag vor etwas mehr als drei Jahren. Um den Genrekönig zu stürzen, reicht das heutzutage aber nicht. Schließlich hatte Blizzard drei Jahre Zeit, um an WoW zu feilen und den Umfang gewaltig nach oben zu schrauben. Es liegt jetzt also an Funcom, schnell gute Inhalte nachzuliefern, um die Spieler bei der Stange zu halten.

Age Of Conan is thankfully is enjoying servers populated with players experiencing a new breed of MMORPG with very few hiccups. Time will tell whether it will go the distance, but for now – long live King Conan!

It is difficult to pass a final judgment on Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, given that some areas, such as the combat and story, are exceptional while others, such as the non-combat gameplay and questing, fall somewhat flat. With that being said, the pros outweigh the cons, and though the game is mostly combat-driven, the combat system is one of the most enjoyable aspects. The Conan lore is used to great effect, and the strengths of the game engine truly bring it to life, from the detail in cut scenes to the visceral display of gore from a fatality. Ultimately, Age of Conan is as enjoyable an MMORPG as any other with a combat system that remains consistently entertaining, and though it falters in other areas, it is quite worthy of attention from those who are looking for an MMO experience that is just a little bit different from the norm.

Die Wochen mit AoC haben mich nach einer längeren MMO Pause wieder auf den Geschmack gebracht. Neben einigen neuen Sachen kamen mir jedoch einige Dinge wieder sehr vertraut vor. In dieser Zeit habe ich nette Leute kennen gelernt und mit ihnen Quests bestritten. Soll nichts Neues sein, kennt man alles, doch haben mir die Effekte im Kampfmodus sehr imponiert, da man solche Moves bisher selten in einem MMO gesehen hat. AoC verleiht der Szene einen neuen Aufwind, doch wird es WoW nicht vom Thron wehen können, obwohl es sehr viel Potenzial hat. Es ist jedoch auch sehr schwer gegen einen Titel wie WoW anzutreten, da die meisten User eigentlich nur diesen mit Rollenspielen in Verbindung bringen, und sonst kaum etwas kennen. Age of Conan zeigt dem Spieler die etwas andere MMO-Seite: ohne Elfen, Trolle usw. und eine Welt in der nicht immer alles so friedlich abläuft wie man es gewohnt ist. Gewalt, Freizügigkeit und schlechtes Benehmen steht in diesem Spiel ganz oben.

Werde ich trotz aller Mankos, der zu schnell in den Hintergrund rückenden Story und der zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt zwar bereits reduzierten, aber immer noch vorhanden Bugs weiterspielen? Ja. Weil für mich Gilden- und sonstige PvP-Auseinandersetzungen nur eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen, ich in eine erwachsene Fantasy-Welt abtauchen kann und sowohl solo als auch in kleinen überschaubaren Gruppen mit Freunden ohne Gildenzwang und ähnlichem Gedöns gut unterhalten werde. Age of Conan hat seine Probleme – zweifellos. Die hatten aber auch andere Vertreter. Und innerhalb seiner Zunft ist AoC ein Online-Rollenspiel mit Perspektive. Ob Funcom es allerdings schaffen wird, das vorhandene Potenzial noch weiter auszuschöpfen und sich die Gunst der Fans zu sichern, bis die nahende Konkurrenz wie Warhammer Online an den Start geht, lässt die Kristallkugel offen – ein guter Grundstein ist gelegt.

Eine derart stimmige Welt haben wir schon lange in einem Online-Rollenspiel gesucht, und das Kampfsystem macht die Gefechte auch nach dem tausendsten Mal noch spannend. Natürlich wird Funcom noch an Hyboria arbeiten müssen, aber wir spielen schon jetzt gerne auf der Baustelle. Und verzichten auf so manchen Komfort, erdulden die Widrigkeiten der Technik und ertragen die eine oder andere Entbehrung.

The result of Funcom's obvious dedication to the product and the impressive stream of fixes they've already issued give confidence regarding the future of the product. The game's major problems stem from missing or incomplete PvP and PvE content, not any lack of solid infrastructure or poor game design. Age of Conan as it stands today is a very enjoyable stew of wild bloodshed, sweaty decadence and the panicked realization that you've just gotten jumped by a group from an enemy guild. Age of Conan going forward should become a delightfully savage second home for plenty of howling on-line barbarians.

Age of Conan is, without a doubt, a very large game. With features like guild vs. guild siege combat that have yet to be experienced by the players, there is a lot left to review. And, as with all MMOs, every patch and update means the game will constantly be improved, tweaked, and refined. It is reasonable to believe that many of the glitches and bugs present in the most recent version will be weeded out with time. While Age of Conan isn't without its flaws, there is a lot of great content worth experiencing for both the casual and hardcore. Its low-fantasy setting, tweaked combat system, attention to visual detail, excellent soundtrack, mature content, and promises of large-scale PvP are what set it apart from what is becoming a largely overcrowded genre.

Funcom succeeded on several fronts with their much-anticipated MMORPG. It's got a different, enjoyable gameplay style, offers a free-for-all PVP experience that fits with Robert E. Howard's fiction and boasts outstanding audio and graphical packages. It also offers fairly standard quest chains, a lackluster crafting system, and three weeks outside of launch still has plenty of technical issues, content either missing or unfinished, and is still in need of quite a bit of polish. Does Conan have the groundwork to eventually become a fantastic game all-around? Sure. Should you start playing right now? Personally, I'd hold off for a few months until more of the game is patched up.

However, once you pass the infant stages of the game, play becomes all too familiar, all too repetitive and all too unpolished. I'm not saying avoid Age of Conan - feel free to give it a go and enjoy the early stages with your free 30 days of play. But when Funcom starts to demand £8.99 a month, AOC becomes harder to recommend.

Of course, the bugs are one of the primary things keeping this game from getting a higher score. While patches loaded with fixes are exceptionally frequent, many bugs and glitches persist. At one point, my attempts to enter instances were met with a crash to the desktop, while in other areas the game seemed to refuse to load some textures. It's little things like this that keep this game from being great, even a major competitor to WoW as I mentioned earlier. Balance issues don't help the game's case either. Aside from losing the truly excellent melee combo system the other classes get, most spellcasters can simply not be worth playing, driving many players to use the heavily armored and more action oriented classes. If Funcom can make these classes more rewarding to play as, gameplay wise and balance wise, they'd have a near perfect MMO on their hands. Until then, this game gets a 7 out of 10.

Avid Gamer (7 out of 10)

Age on Conan is on track to offer a welcome alternative to its competition. We recommend you hold off for a couple months. By then, the game will be balanced, content added and problems fixed. Even in its current state, the Age of Conan still offers an enjoyable grind. It doesn’t whisk you away to places unseen, but instead provides an engrossing MMO to gradually play through. Check it out, you’ll have a blast. Better than World of Warcraft? (Ed – I couldn’t resist) No, but it has the possibility to be on par with it very soon.

The MMO Gamer (3.5 out of 5)

FunCom has made a beautiful game with an excellent single-player RPG experience for the first 20 levels. Unfortunately, this experience is marred by many technical issues that can lead to a frustrating play experience. If you’re looking for a world that’s gorgeous to look at, and geared more to a single-player experience than being an immersive world, then you can do a lot worse than Age of Conan. If you have a need for an immersive, persistent world, then AoC may not quite be what you’re after, but maybe check back in a few months when Guild warfare is gearing up. That’s what I’m planning on doing, with the hopes that FunCom will address and correct the technical issues experienced by a good portion of its playerbase, and implement a number of features that were advertised before the launch.

Nevertheless, Conan's core features are brilliant. Blood, sex, power, vengeance, lordship, and lust together drive a game that has tremendous potential, despite its lackluster polish. In the months to come, Hyboria will grow into a gladiatorial contender that you may well want to experience, World of Warcraft fan or not. For the moment, though, this is a game best left to the MMO crowd that's been craving an M-rated change of pace.

"This summer!" screams an open letter from Age of Conan's game director from the loader screen, a plea for subscribers to be patient with the development process. This summer, content will exist where content is lacking. This summer, PVP will have meaning beyond...well, being a jerk. This summer, broken character skills will work, servers will be stable, and hard locks will be a thing of the past. Right now, Age of Conan is fun game to play -- this summer, it might be ready for the MMO pantheon.

Game Revolution (B-)

Age of Conan shows an awful lot of promise; there is, behind the bugs and balance issues that will hopefully be patched up, the kernel of a very good MMO. The problem is that potential is not the same as value, and it's hard to recommend Age of Conan as it stands right now. In six months, however, it should be spectacular.

Conan bietet auch eine gut gepflegte Spielwelt, doch knapp 120 Euro für ein halbes Jahr Spielspaß sind wirklich nicht wenig. Wäre die technische Note besser ausgefallen, dann hätte Conan eine deutlich bessere Figur gemacht als nur eine "befriedigende".
