Gradius Gaiden is the perfect example of what kind of game we need more of these days. It relies on the same formula that made Gradius a hit, and it comes across as an awesome game. More than anything, it proves that all it takes to make a game great is solid gameplay. With Gradius Gaiden being included on the fall U.S. release of the "Salamander Deluxe Pack", there's no real reason to import this one. However, buy the deluxe pack. 3 versions of Salamnader (the spinoff of Gradius) plus Gradius Gaiden, on one disc? Any shoot-em-up fan would have to be crazy to pass it up.

Konami's designers still have the touch and have made the Gradius port to the 32-bit generation nicely. While it can't compete with the graphics of Star Fox 64 or RayStorm, gameplay is what counts, and Gradius Gaiden delivers.
