If Trolls on Treasure Island looks familiar, that’s because your knowledge of obscure NES titles is first-rate. The game is actually a sequel to Dudes with Attitude. Both games contain the same gameplay – collect jewels, never stop moving, etc. – but in the latter, you control a creepy floating face and the levels are of a casual difficulty. Trolls on Treasure Island is the better of the two games, thanks to its endearing main character (Troll dolls are disturbing in real life, but their virtual counterparts are cute!), deep challenge, and refined level design. If only all bizarre unlicensed games were this amusing.

Unfortunately, level design is everything here, and only about 50 percent seem well suited for the mechanics. Some require a lot of backtracking to change colors multiple times to collect one colored object at a time. It’s still a surprisingly unique and creative game, and worth at least a look for fans of quick-thinking puzzlers.

There's a certain charm to the game's horribleness. It's the kind of thing that would make a lot of generally smart people get suckered into believing that Trolls on Treasure Island is worth checking out. I am not easily duped. With gameplay about as responsive as yelling at the TV weatherman, I find it impossible to recommend Trolls on Treasure Island.
