Hardcore Evil Dead fans want to like Evil Dead: Hail to the King so much that like zombies, they just might suffer through this CD’s imprecise gameplay and rough-hewn graphics. They’ll be rewarded by plenty of great visual references to the films, that unfortunately range from raggedy, uninspired monster designs to cool cinematic story sequences. Also, Bruce Campbell’s now-classic one-liners (Come get some!) are a major plus. However, it’s a mystery (and a shame) why with solid survival horror games like Nightmare Creatures or the Resident Evil series out there as examples, a can’t-miss movie license like Evil Dead couldn’t have faired better. Hold out hope that better versions of this game will show.

Game Informer Magazine (5.25 out of 10)

One would think the developers would understand some of the play mechanics that made Resident Evil cool, considering they decided to emulate that classic game. Nothing shocks or surprises you, aside from the fact that so many horrible decisions conceived this blundering zombie of a game. Enemies regenerate constantly, even as you're picking up items from the last battle. Combat is absurd, and the lack of variety in weapons (there are guns, but almost no ammo) make it a total bore. It's not scary, funny, or even gory. This Evil Dead stinks like a rotting, disembodied hand. If you love Evil Dead and want more, I suggest checking out Peter Jackson's Bad Taste and Dead Alive (the unedited version). You'll probably completely forget about this game when you see a man liquefy a house full of zombies with a lawnmower strapped to his waist.

Game Informer Magazine (4.5 out of 10)

I consider Evil Dead: Hail to the King an utter tragedy. There's so many ways this game could have gone right, I have trouble comprehending how it turned out so bad. A 4.5 is a horrible score, but if this didn't have the Evil Dead license I may have given it a negative rating. The only thing it does right is swallow your soul.

Sure enough, she's an nasty one. Raimi may have wanted to add to the legacy of the Evil Dead series with a new chapter of Evil Dead, but he may as well have done a videogame version of "For Love Of The Game" -- at least baseball games have enough sense to swing only one bat. Instead, all we've learned from this new Evil Dead is that, eight years after our last meeting, Ash is blind like Urkel, as nimble as a truck on ice, and couldn't fight a playground toddler if his life depended on it. Great, can't wait to see what the next chapter adds...

Had the battle sequences not been so maddeningly frustrating and frequent, Evil Dead: Hail to the King would at least weigh in as a decent Resident Evil clone, but they work to make the game almost unplayable. The fights even undermine the otherwise decent puzzle-solving elements, since you're required to do a lot of backtracking across areas where Deadites constantly respawn.

Hey Poor Player ( )

It seems like an obvious comparison to compare this game to a b-movie but it can play just like that. As a fan of the series, a majority of the game was a lot of fun to play through, I was even looking forward to the task. It’s too bad the game wears out its welcome fast considering it’s only a couple of hours. Like a b-movie, I recommend you play this around friends. You can share the tough controls. You can marvel at the silly visuals. Watch them get beaten into oblivion by the ever-spawning deadites. Laugh as your pals try to find the sparkly items and doors that have hidden themselves in the backgrounds that are so dark it’s hard to see. Watch them get mad when they’ve used their last save tape and have to start over.
