Description official description

Bomberman 64 is a 3D action platformer. In the game's one-player Adventure mode, marauders have set their sights on Bomberman's peaceful planet. You'll explore labyrinthine levels by dropping bombs, solving puzzles and finding hidden items. The action takes place across five brightly colored worlds: a smoldering volcano, ruined castle, icy mountain range, orbiting space station and storybook village. Find all 100 Gold Cards in the first five worlds and you can access a sixth world. To maximize your score, you'll need to finish each of the 20 levels as quickly as possible. Deadlines are tighter on the Hard difficulty setting.

The game's multiplayer mode comes in two variations: in Single Battle mode, players dash about arenas, trying to blow each other to pieces. Team Battle mode is a highly explosive version of capture-the-flag. Your goal here is to destroy the enemy team's gems while protecting your own. You can choose the number and duration of battles. You can also choose from three levels of artificial intelligence for CPU-controlled bombers.

When the Ghost option is selected, your little guy will return as a wispy double of his old self after he's gone boom. Ghosts can control a normal Bomberman, but they cannot deploy bombs. Other features include the possibility to toss or kick your bombs diagonally, the ability to pump up bombs, knock foes unconscious and then grab and toss them.

A good platform game that doesn't follow in the footsteps of its NES and SNES predecessors.

The Good
There were a lot of cool ways to use the bombs like kicking it and pumping it up. A few of the levels were large and complex, and there's always something more to do. Plenty of things to keep you busy, like the weapons and armor and all the items you can get.

The Bad
The multiplayer mode just doesn't compare to the SNES versions. I can't really think of anything else.......

The Bottom Line
Great if you like 3D platform games but don't buy it expecting to get the SNES version.

Disappointing for Bomberman fans

The Good
In this addition to the Bomberman series I can honestly say there are a few things I did like. I thought it was cool that in the battle mode after you die you can still be a part of the game rather than just spectate. When you die you come back as a Bomberman ghost and you can actually interfere with the surviving players. It's every losers dream come true! As a Bomberman ghost you can chase around the alive players and if you manage to catch one of them you jump on there back and cover there eyes. Now you can control them an seek vengeance. Oh beautiful vengeance.

Another positive out of this garbage of a game was the maps were much more technical. Opposed to the square arena's now there is multi-level and multi-shape arenas.

Overall Bomberman 64 is lucky i'm the optimistic type, otherwise this "What I liked" segment of the review would be blank.

The Bad
I really hated how the multi-player battle mode was changed. Usually changes are made to better a game, what were they thinking! Instead of using your bombs to blow up the blocks separating you from you opponents(as in Mega Bomberman), there are no blocks! Now you all just roam a basically open arena. In the older games you had to earn power-ups. Now you start with kick bomb!?! So now there are a bunch of Bombermen running around kicking bombs across an open arena. There's no dodging bombs using walls, trapping opponents or the classic mistake of misplacing a bomb trapping you in certain death.

This game actually managed to give Bomberman a bad name, especially for those who unfortunately never played the good Bomberman games.

The Bottom Line
Possibly fun for those who enjoy single-player and want to try something new. For those who loved the classic multi-player, don't even bother.
