All in all, Tenchu is one the best Japanese ports ever. Kudos to Activision for one of the most realistic gameplay experiences I have ever encountered. Despite some polygonal errors, I found the rest of the game to be flawless. Of all the games that I have reviewed recently, this one takes the cake. I'll be playing it for many hours to come.

Tenchu is a first in many ways. It's an assassin simulator. No, it's better than that, it's a ninja simulator. Second, after so many Shinobi titles that we wanted to like more than we did (and sold back for to EB), we can actually feel good about Tenchu. Shinobi was always good, make no mistake, but Tenchu brings the assassin game to a completely new height.

A must buy for action fans. Think of it as Metal Gear Solid in medieval Japanese setting, and you'll get the idea about Tenchu.

With all this said I would highly recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a little action. It delivers in all the games department and is just a blast to play. If there is one bad thing to say about this game, it would be that it's over to soon. Even with it's 10 level the game can still be fairly short once you get the hang of the game. I was finished it in just a few short days, but at no point did I regret buying it instead of just renting it. Tenchu is awesome fun, and for me the bloody crimson glory made the game even more entertaining to play.

Tenchu ist das klassische Beispiel für eine gelungene Mixtur aus frustreichen und motivierenden Passagen. Ab der Hälfte des Spiels möchte man die CD zuweilen aus dem Laufwerk reißen und in der Mitte auseinanderbrechen, doch dann denkt man an die vielen großen, noch nicht gelösten Geheimnisse und das beispiellose Flair, welches einem dabei beschert wird. Für meinen Geschmack sind die Grafiken zwar etwas “großkariert“ und ein wenig plump, doch angesichts der düsteren Spielatmosphäre (es ist eigentlich ständig Mitternacht) fällt das nicht weiter ins Gewicht. Activision verpaßte dem japanischen Original eine Art Direator‘s Cut, der jedoch leider genau das zu verbessern suchte, was eigentlich gar nicht zu verfeinern war: Vorzüge der japanischen Version avancierten zu Schwächen der USA/PAL-Fassung und umgekehrt.

The Bottom line, Tenchu is a very refreshing game I recommend to anyone. Bravo to the folks at Sony Music and at Activision for their improvements and localization efforts.

Tenchu is een spel zonder genade en zonder romantiek. Het is jouw bloed of zijn bloed en wie verslapt wordt gekeeld. Geen mooie prinsesjes die gered hoeven te worden: gewoon moord op afspraak, niets meer en niets minder.

Acquire's Tenchu can easily be seen as a confluence of Eidos' Tomb Raider and Square's Bushido Blade. There is, thankfully, more originality at work here than just a direct meld of the two titles, and it delivers a better attempt at an action-packed 3D adventure than we've seen to date.

Lange habe ich auf ein Game wie Tenchu gewartet. bei dem man endlich einmal subtilere Kampfmethoden anwenden muß, anstatt, wie bei sonstigen Prüglern, nach dem ewigen Motto „immer mitten in die Fresse rein“ bis zum jüngsten Tag Gegner plattzumachen. Und tatsächlich ist das Gameplay von Tenchu erfrischend innovativ und einzigartig. Da der Spieler jederzeit die Wahl hat, entweder heimlich umherzuschleichen oder offensiv auf den nächsten Wächter zuzurennen und ihn einem hektischen Fechtkampf à la Bushido Blade niederzustrecken, erhält Tenchu eine interessante Spieltiefe. Grund zur Kritik gibt allerdings die Grafik des Ninja-Abenteuers, Da man häufig „Blitze“ zwischen den Polygonflächen erkennt und sich die Texturen oft unansehnlich falten, macht das Ganze einen etwas schlampigen Eindruck. Außerdem ist die Kameraführung gerade im Gefecht gelegentlich so ungeschickt, daß man den eigenen Fighter oder den Gegner aus dem Auge verliert, was fatale Folgen haben kann.

Une chose est sure, quand ça va bien, Tenchu est extrêmement satisfaisant! Et plus on le connait, plus on s'amuse à trouver des façons de passer chaque mission. C'est un jeu sombre, violent, et brutal qui plaira à ceux qui aiment les jeux un peu plus matures. C'est un jeu qu'il faut apprendre à maitriser afin de bien s'en sortir. Il ne nous tient pas la main et nous demande d'être vigilant et se débrouiller avec ce qu'on voit sur le terrain. Il demeure un classique dans le genre avec ses défauts et ses qualités!

Realism in games has always been a hot issue, but Tenchu achieved the perfect mixture of realistic ninja action with accompanying elements of the fantastic. In the end, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins was a ground-breaking but problematic stealth affair that would eventually identify itself as a gaming brand name for many years to come.

Ce premier opus a marqué l'ère Playstation et les joueurs qui ont eu la chance d'y jouer à l'époque. Possédant de bonnes idées et une ambiance unique, Tenchu a tout ce qu'il faut pour s'imposer comme une référence du jeu d'infiltration ninja. Malheureusement, à l'exception d'un deuxième opus tout aussi réussi, le passage aux consoles nouvelle génération ne permit pas à la série de retrouver la splendeur de ses premières années. Tenchu premier du nom reste néanmoins fort sympathique mais c'est un titre qui, à l'instar de ses héros, est condamné à demeurer dans l'ombre.

Tenchu had enormous potential, but it feels as if it were rushed. A few more months spent tweaking the camera, improving the AI, and correcting the inventory scheme would have resulted in a much more enjoyable experience. As it stands, however, many will enjoy it for the unique gameplay it offers. No other game on the market is quite like it, and because Tenchu rates the player’s ability, one can always improve. Its replay value is enormous, and the tactics a player can employ are only limited by his imagination.

This game does the feared, which is not live up to its potential. Tenchu crashes down in the fundamentals. The Graphics and ambient sounds took the day off. The gameplay is well thought out but gets tedious and difficult. The game AI is really jacked up, making it hard even on the easiest setting. You must remember though this game requires patience, thought, and of course stealth. Don't go Rambo, it only alerts every guard in the game. I'd have to say more should have been done graphically. Some things left you feeling, "man this is not done right". What we fear the most, are the small graphic errors, and certain gameplay factors. Which do effect the game, leaving it with a "half-baked" aura.

Very simple stealth game.

The Good
First thing which struck me was simplicity. You're ninja, know how far away enemies are and whether they know about you. Explaned as Chi-meter. It was very similar to listening to mumbling of guard in Thief.
Controls were intuitive and catchy music helped a great deal to sink into atmosphere.
Story showed that main character are ninjas, very loyal ninjas, and they are not big thinkers... some of we're annoying at first but then they felt they belong to the story ... so naturally you can't expect them to understand some events.
Although I bash it a little, I must admit that AI of characters is quite impressive for it is challenging. For me personally thugs were very quite dumb, but those new to stealth games and season players they are OK.
The Bad
It's very easy to cause bloodbath here. Fortunately some fights can be frustrating which forces you to move slowly and think about your next step.
Also sometimes it's too easy to just run between and from enemies. And enemies have much simpler mind than in games like Pacman.
Enemies can't swim, they can only sunk. But they are not afraid to pursue you into water.
The Bottom Line
Well made stealth game. I'd say well balanced if there was not few glitches. Very simple game mechanics. For it's time only alternative to Thief. And a must for those interested in stealth games and their development.
