Description official descriptions

This installment in the long-running Army Men series is the first to feature third-person aerial combat in full 3D.

Choosing a chopper among the Huey, Chinook, Super Stallion, or Apache, the player will have to rescue or provide air support to fellow Army Men, while shooting down anything that moves (including enemy helicopters and troops, as well as hordes of insects) across 16 different missions.

The game also features a multiplayer mode where players can either battle each other or join forces in co-op.

The N64's only decent Army Men title

The Good
Every Army Men game on the N64 so far hasn't really worked at all, so to have in my book the 'best' Army Men series more then makes up for the mistakes. What we have here is a slightly updated version of the PSX/PC Air Attack title, and everything I reviewed for the PSX title can be said here.

Of course there are a few improvements. 3DO has taken into account the greater graphics capability of the system, and has improved the frame rate a tad as well as adding some neat multiplayer elements, one of the major problems with the earlier titles in the 'Air' series.

The Bad
I found that most of the levels are basically the same as the PSX, so the lastability factor took a major knockback. But with that out of the way, N64 gamers can now say they have the best Army Men title on any system, period (or at least until the next sequel comes along).

The Bottom Line
Improvements to multiplayer helps to tip my rating higher then the PSX/PC second version. Though anyone who has played Air Attack may shy away from this as most of the levels are repeats with a few minor changes.

3DO should really look to this series as the flag ship Army Men title. I mean really, how much more can you do with an Army battle after 10 games? At least this series adds a little more variety.

It's getting better, actually.

The Good
Following on from the first title, I must say I'm pleased with the improvements here. The move to 3D allows for a greater freedom in gameplay, and I'm happy to say better graphics all-round. I actually enjoyed this for a time, which is saying something for an Army Men game.

I did mention when reviewing Air Tactics that a little spit and polish would be a big help, so in a sense I'm happy that 3DO kept with it and improved on the first title.

The Bad
All that said, there are still areas that need improvement. At times the controls were a little on the tricky side, nothing too drastic but it can have an effect on the gameplay (or maybe that was just my bad judgement when picking up, then dropping to their deaths, my little green men because I'm not very good!)

The move to 3D is a start, but there's still plenty more the PSX can do then what is displayed here. And the multiplayer options can also be improved further, but what's included here will keep you going for a while longer.

The Bottom Line
It's an improvement in possibly the best chance of a good Army Men series (who would have thought anyone would say that). Let's just hope 3DO keep on going now, they might just be onto something.
