If you love this sort of game, Last Remnant is very different and you will enjoy it, if you are new to the genre though then you are probably best to start off with one of the more widely known titles like Final Fantasy, which are a bit more user friendly.

Even with the technical issues at hand (boy is there a lot), Square-Enix has to be commended for making (what is in my opinion) one of the most original and addicting RPG's in ages; certainly one of the finest this generation. From a company that looks to spit out tons of Final Fantasy, The Last Remnant is a breath of fresh of breath air featuring characters that are not whiny, a deep battle system that rewards your persistence and a story full of twists and revelations that keeps you playing for hours on end. The title may not be for casual JRPG fans looking for a small fix, but for hardcore enthusiasts of the genre - The Last Remnant will no doubt be this years biggest surprise.

Rush's world is gorgeous, and once the game opens up to side quests, you'll want to explore for the sake of exploring, not just to collect the next "+1 ATK" equipment upgrade. But during battles, Remnant uses a rapid-cutting, zoomed-in style more suited to a Bourne fight sequence than to large-scale tactics. Battles are also plagued by graphical slowdown and choppy frame rate, so if that sort of thing bothers you, consider waiting for the PC or PlayStation 3 release to see if Square Enix fixes the problem.

We can’t deny it, we’ve succumbed to The Last Remnant’s charms. The gameplay is refreshing and addictive, the strategic elements have you constantly assessing the situation and working the angles, and it has a decidedly non-Japanese, JRPG feel to it. Slick, fun, intelligent and rewarding, let’s hope this is the direction turn based affairs take in the future.

Despite the ludicrously steep learning curve (it’s easy to get annihilated if you’re not careful – so save often!) it’s an interesting approach to battling, and there’s as much fun to be had tinkering with your unions to maximize their potential as there is taking to the battlefield. A word of warning though, this isn’t an RPG for everyone, as it was intended to be. It’s often brutally tough, inaccessible and a massive grind. But, if you have the patience, at a whopping 80 hours of play, you’ll find plenty to enjoy!

As I stated earlier in this review, your enjoyment of The Last Remnant is going to come down to your toleration for a good game wrapped up in a graphical mess. If this game ran smoother, it would have been something special. Instead it's just a solid, worthwhile trip that will be remembered more for its shortcomings than it will its triumphs, and what a shame that is.

I can't think of a game I had more of a love/hate relationship with than The Last Remnant. There were times I would sit down, start to play and neglect more important tasks. Other times, I would find myself cursing the game, its creators and anyone else I could think of. When you get down it, it seems that in trying to create something with a broader appeal, Square Enix inadvertently created something that may appeal to an even more niche audience. It's tempting to push the game aside early on in the experience, but if given enough time, it will likely grow on you. The Last Remnant may not appeal to everyone, but strategy-minded RPG fans will want to give it a chance.

This game falls just short of greatness mainly due to unacceptable graphical problems and a few poorly implemented ideas. If there had been less loading screens and more choice about battle commands, then this would have been the ideal game to tide us over until Final Fantasy XIII emerges. As it is though, this game is perfect for the RPG fanatics of the world but may be a harsh introduction for novices and those who can’t look past the wonky graphics.

When everything is said and done The Last Remnant will probably be remembered as a minor game from Square Enix, easily forgotten once the new Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest hit store shelves. But The Last Remnant is a solid role-playing game that is unfortunately marred by a slow moving story, lame characters and some of the worst performance issues I have ever run across. There's a fun game to be found here, but you're going to have to do a lot of digging. For all intents and purposes, The Last Remnant has the makings of a great RPG: the story is engaging and the battle system is tons of fun to play with. And, with a lot of extra missions and side quests, there certainly is a lot of replay potential to this title. However, it seems that all these great aspects are not enough to pull it past its glaring graphical issues. If this title had been left in development just a little longer, then it might have been one of the best RPGs of the current generation. But as it stands, The Last Remnant is a great RPG that is buried under broken graphics and long load times.

This game is a very regrettable game to rate, not because it’s an awful game, but because it’s one of those titles that just has most of the qualities of an overly satisfying experience, but let’s itself down due to the excessive technical issues, silly design flaws and an inaccessible interface. A game that puts all its effort into an artistic masterpiece and a captivating storyline, but exhausts itself on first impressions and performance. You're left with a feeling that if the game had an extra few months to iron out the inconsistencies then it might just had fulfilled its easily reachable potential.

The texture problems and framerate issues are unforgivable in this current generation and to be honest; installing a game on the HD using the NXE shouldn't be a requirement. Whilst it's not listed as such on the box it should really be noted that there is a significant performance upgrade to the game if you do put it on the HD and that's one of my bugbears with the whole thing. It's supposed to be a convenience and whilst some of us have the 120GB drives there are several people with 20GB or memory cards that will find this game unplayable unless they install it. All in all though, Last Remnant is still better than Too Human.

Every change of camera is greeted by painful seconds as the textures load in. Every opened door is greeted with the loading screen. Every battle features a cataclysmic drop in frame rate. We wonder if it's a problem with the engine itself, or simply a lack of experience in its use. Either way, the result callously skims the cream from the top, depriving you of your ultimate satisfaction. And it's for this reason that the jury finds The Last Remnant guilty with mitigating circumstances. A massively rewarding, albeit blighted experience.

When you look past the serious technical issues and the sometimes questionable story, The Last Remnant is an above average game that offers a deep and unique gameplay experience with absolutely gripping music scores and intense battle sequences. The world is massive with many towns and dungeons to explore, plus you can always take a break from the main storyline to poke around in other people’s business. The experience is also a lengthy one containing a gritty and fairly realistic world filled with themes such as territorial war and sibling compassion. Some of the issues definitely should have been reworked, but the game manages to create a unique and enjoyable experience in spite of them.

The Last Remnant is a funny old game. Every time it scores a plus point, it then does something that lets it down a bit. However, despite its many faults, I really enjoyed it. It manages to break from the norm slightly yet also has that 'traditional' feeling to it. Unfortunately, once the big guns of Final Fantasy 13 and Star Ocean arrive, it will probably fall into the background, much like Enchanted Arms did when Blue Dragon arrived. However for now, it is an enjoyable stop-gap for anyone who enjoys JRPGs. Just don't expect too much from it. It likes to give with one hand and take away with the other.

With just few tweaks to the combat system and the aforementioned engine tweak (or a better implementation of UE3), The Last Remnant could be rubbing shoulders with the big boys—Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Fable II. But as it sits, The Last Remnant is positioned a rung below Lost Odyssey (even though it struggled with UE3 implementation as well), and in the general, less memorable vicinity of Infinite Undiscovery and Tales of Vesperia. It’s not a bad freshman effort per se, but not one up to snuff when considering Square Enix’s otherworldly IP lineage.

Ultimately I came away from Last Remnant feeling more disappointed than pleased, but I can't say that the whole experience was a wash. The battle system is really a blast, and well worth checking out for RPG vets, but this isn't the great SE experience I was hoping to find. I'm glad they're trying out new IP's, but this isn't the best start to a new series, and the quality of the technical work leaves a lot to be desired. You can chalk it up to new hardware I suppose, but this late in the 360 lifecycle it seems like the game could have seen a bit more polish prior to release. Still, there were definitely aspects of the game I enjoyed, and I do feel like it's worth checking out, even if it's just a rental or two.

Slowdown, freezing, and lack of textures make this game on the breaking point of being unbearable to even play. It's a unique and compelling combat system buried beneath choppy pacing, too much wandering around, disappointing presentation problems and an awful lot of loading, and whether that's worth accepting depends largely on your tolerance or affection for long-winded self-indulgence, and whether you think 40 quid is a reasonable amount to pay for one superb idea cushioned by hours of grinding mediocrity.

The Last Remnant is a technical mess, but it's also behind the curve in so many ways. While games like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect use voiceovers for every conversation, The Last Remnant doesn't even voice every main story sequence. While games like Eternal Sonata offer immaculately detailed environments, The Last Remnant often tosses you into cookie-cutter battles in repetitive bland caves or barren fields. And while games like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey deliver towns to explore and secrets to find, The Last Remnant skimps and gives only a few points worth visiting in each small town. I can't think of one aspect of The Last Remnant that is even on par with other recent titles, let alone leading the charge. It's not saved by a fantastic story or exciting gameplay either, which proves that just because it's a Square Enix RPG on Xbox 360, it doesn't mean it's a good thing.

I can only wonder what is happening to Square Enix. This is yet another title of theirs that has a "rushed to the presses" feel. I understand the need to get a game out before the Christmas holiday, but do not sacrifice quality to do so.

Edge (5 out of 10)

For JRPG unbelievers the battle system changes don’t address the common complaints leveled at the genre. For fans, the emphasis and pacing of its unique selling point overwhelms everything else, stripping the game of its poetry and balance.

So where does The Last Remnant stand compared to other RPGs this gen? It’s hard to say. On one hand, the story and characters mostly appeal to the traditional JRPG gamer. On the other, the combat and general aesthetics are aimed toward a more worldwide/Western gamer and rather than focus on making one kind of game and making it good (the usual Square Enix way), the developers instead tried too hard to make it appeal to two widely different audiences. A few changes to combat, more time spent working with Unreal Engine 3, and a few tweaks to the story would have made Last Remnant the game I was looking forward to when it was revealed. Instead, thanks to the technical issues and lackluster “new and innovative combat,” we have a game that doesn’t live up to the recent titles in either market.

1UP (D)

Installing the game to your hard drive in the new Xbox Dashboard shortens the load screens from ridiculously lengthy to bearable, but the slowdown during large battles -- especially boss confrontations -- persists. As do other nagging problems: a hard-to-use party system that doesn't let you easily swap members around, overlong boss battles, and (outside of the major story characters) a host of fighters that are completely indistinguishable from one another. The severe technical issues are problematic, but the battle system is the game's major failing. But this review, like the game, has gone on for far too long. Some questions are left unanswered at the end of the game -- but I truly hope this is the last Remnant.
