Starblade satisfies the jet jockey in all of us, but it also asks for intense luck and incredible timing in the bargain. This game definitely puts you at the business end of the Blade.
GamesCollection (May 30, 2008)
3DO Magazine (UK) (Feb, 1995)
This stylish shoot-'em-up was a huge hit in the arcades: stunning FMV backdrops are cleverly integrated with realtime generated polygons to superb effect. As well as the original arcade style graphics, the 3DO version even offers an enhanced mode which features stunning texture maps, creating a fabulous package. A spectacular experience, especially on a huge TV.
Unfortunately, you'll have Starblade licked in about an hour, assuming you keep that thumb locked down on the button. Why does this game get four stars then? Because the overall joy and elation you'll feel while engulfed in this game is enough to fill up thirty other on-rails shooters! It's such an immersive and well designed universe that you'll almost forget that its on rails.
So while it's not perfect, Starblade is a really fun shooter for the 3DO. Excellent graphics and a great science-fiction atmosphere compensate for the lack of directional control. Now if only they could combine this game with Shockwave...I think that I would have a heart attack from sheer joy.
Finally, Namco has decided to develop games for the 3DO console. Starblade is the first title to be ported to the 3DO and for a first try, it is very well done. The game looks even better than the arcade version and gives you the possibility to play with textures for enemies and structures. You can still choose to keep the original look of the game without any textures if you prefer, but personally I find it more attractive with the new feature.
Oldies Rising (May 14, 2013)
GameFan Magazine (Feb, 1995)
This is the best home version of Starblade that I can imagine. It's not quite as thrilling as the amazing (and very pricey) coin-op, but it sure comes close. A year ago I would've been beside myself, but with the Saturn and PS around, I'm less than thrilled with Full Motion Shooters. Fans of the game however, will love it.
Video Games (Apr, 1995)
3DO programmers I assume have a 3DO programming kit dispensed by Trip Hawkins Inc, as each 3DO game seems to have the same standard explosion. They're not so impressive this around though. The game doesn't have the wow factor it had in the arcades where a whole gang of you took control of a whole squadron of Geo Swords. As such the gameplay becomes tiresome without the notoriety of a licence like Star Wars and the visuals aren't anything new these days. This game just doesn't cut it I'm afraid.
CD Player (1996)
