GAMINGtruth (Mar 05, 2013)
The title is a contender for ‘Game of the Year’ on any platform. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is a no-brainer for any fan of action games. Similar titles like God of War and other Castlevania titles seem to be cut from the same thread. If you don’t have a ’3DS yet, this is yet another reason to buy one now.
GameDynamo (Mar 07, 2013)
Most impressive of all, however, is the level design of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, which is consistently inventive and entertaining. Though there are several cameos from various figures in Castlevania history, such as fire-spitting bone pillars and those always-intolerable fleamen, the game maintains its own unique identity. Over the course of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, you’ll fight an entire harem of succubi, increasingly dismember a demon lord across three generations of Belmont, swing from grapple point to grapple point with agility rivaling Spider-Man, and kill a whole lot of the undead. Few games offer this much diversity in such a tight package, let alone games designed for handheld platforms. If you have a 3DS, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate is an essential purchase.
Rely on Horror (Mar, 2013)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is a classic. It’s not just a faithful entry in the series, it’s also one of the best. MercurySteam has added another shining jewel to the 3DS’s impressive library of games.
GamerFuzion (Mar 05, 2013)
One of the best adventures game played as of today. In his debut on a handheld, MercurySteam again make a great game, perfectly adapted his personal vision of the universe to the particular Castlevania 3DS, including its advantages, the 3D effect, and disadvantages, certain technical limitations. Being in two dimensions and restore classic characters might suggest that this is a Castlevania that follows the trail of previous deliveries laptops, but much less, and we are adapting to what is seen in Lords of Shadow gameplay to 2D.
Nintendo Insider (Mar 05, 2013)
Astounding at every turn, Mirror of Fate proves an unforgettable experience and perhaps becomes the finest handheld entry within Konami's respected franchise to date.
Hobby Consolas (Mar, 2013)
Gaming Irresponsibly (Mar 13, 2013)
After playing through the entirety of Mirror of Fate, I ended up being a little upset. I played through Lords of Shadow grudgingly, simply because of the Castlevania name attached to it. After Mirror of Fate, I know that I am now going to get sucked into playing Lords of Shadow 2, because the story was so well delivered that I just HAVE TO see where the series goes next. If you were a Castlevania loyalist like me, you are in for a surprise, it turns out that this Castlevania game is one that is certainly worth playing. In fact it is likely the best 3DS game I have had the chance to play so far. With that being said, the ball is in your court Konami. Can you deliver on this level one more time?
In a world in which developers are so often afraid of spectacle in handheld games - scared, apparently, that you'll miss it, or it'll overcomplicate things - this stands out proudly. It's a compromise between action and exploration, between the series' history and contemporary trends, between traditional presentation and modern technology. It's the best Castlevania game we've played in years and it might be the best action game we've ever played on a handheld console.
Atisal (Mar 18, 2013)
Gamer.no (Mar 07, 2013)
GamesWeasel (Mar 18, 2013)
This is without a doubt one of the best games on the 3DS to date. It has a genuine story even though it’s a little silly at times, great presentation in terms of gothic visuals and music and a reason to go back and collect everything to try and get 100%. It’s also slightly easier than previous games on normal settings but don’t worry, if you like punishment you’ll unlock hardcore mode when you complete the game so you can go back and try it all again.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate may have an overly long title but it still gets 9 out of 10.
GamezGeneration (Mar 16, 2013)
ZTGameDomain (Mar, 2013)
It feels like a big game that works very well for portable play, which is a significant accomplishment. While the combat wasn’t always engaging, the soundtrack and presentation were always enough to keep me into the game. Boss fights are fun and varied, and the excellent checkpointing system kept the big encounters from becoming frustrating. Castlevania fans and 3DS owners alike will find a lot to enjoy here.
videogamer.com (Mar, 2013)
Its mixture older-style exploration with LoS' combat results in not only a truly great Castlevania game, but also a great action title and one of the best offerings on Nintendo's console.
Game Over Online (Mar, 2013)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate couldn’t have many more subtitles attached to it. It also couldn’t be a much better game than it is. Outside of a couple of control issues, there isn’t a lot to not like, and I love that the developers chose to tailor-make an experience for the 3DS that was clearly made with the hardware in mind. Instead of trying to make a dumbed-down game in the vein of its console cousin, they crafted something that stands apart from it while also paying homage to many of the franchise’s best games over the past 15 years. Mirror of Fate manages to make the once well-worn Metroidvania formula new again by using this reboot-based version of the franchise, and is a must-play for any fans of the series.
3D Juegos (Mar, 2013)
XboxAchievements (Oct 18, 2010)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a truly astonishing action adventure. In terms of ambition and epic scale, it rivals the best the genre has to offer, and while the story is a bit of a slow-burner, once it gains momentum towards the end however, it's genuinely compelling and engaging. Its sprawling landscapes and breathtaking visuals are the very definition of epic and the boss battles are outstanding, as Shadow of the Colossus-sized Titans give way to huge knights, vampires, freakish demons and more. Rest assured too, that all of your effort is paid off with one of the finest epilogues we've seen in a game in a long time. In short, Lords of Shadow is simply stunning, with only a few minor quibbles to speak of to taint its successful return to the top.
Digital Chumps (Mar 10, 2013)
I don't think it's unreasonable to put this amongst the best of the 3DS library, and for Castlevania fans, especially those tuned into Lords of Shadow, it's a must that won't disappoint. Similar to Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate keeps you coming back for more. The difficulty and reward and enjoyment of playing are balanced very well and with the 3DS' ability to pause and pick up instantly where you left off, it's that just much more fun to play.
LevelUp (Mar 06, 2013)
NintendoFuse (Mar 17, 2013)
Overall, Mirror of Fate is a very solid game and is very enjoyable to play. The game itself seems a little short as I finished the game with a 100% rating and it took about fifteen hours. The engaging gameplay and stellar 3D effects do make this game a must have for fans of platforming and adventure games. The boss battles are pretty challenging despite the autosave healing assistance and also have interactive cut scenes to hit buttons. I would recommend this game to fans of the Castlevania games along with anyone that enjoys this genre of games.
GamingTrend (Mar, 2013)
I personally enjoy the 2D Castlevania titles, so I was skeptical to play Mirror of Fate. Of course, I was also skeptical of another developer taking over one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history, and that turned out pretty great. Now we see MercurySteam taking the same approach to the franchise in the handheld space, and again with decent results. Combat remains fast and furious, bosses are still super-huge, and the canon-bending 9-hour storyline gives us a new take on a game we’ve been essentially repeating since its debut in 1986. While there are some rough edges, there is enough here to recommend. Mirror of Fate also represents the best use of 3D that I’ve seen in a handheld game thus far. You’ve missed a few great RPGs if your Nintendo 3DS has been gathering dust, but adding this title to your library will solve that problem for you rather quickly.
On paper, taking direct inspiration from the Lords of Shadow interpretation of Castlevania doesn’t play to Mirror of Fate’s favor. Handheld Castlevania games have long been associated with expectations for a specific and traditional hue of gameplay and presentation, with which the combo- and cinematic-heavy Lords of Shadow brand might seem incompatible. In a sense, this concern is accurate; Mirror of Fate is not the expected breed of portable Castlevania. However, it finds firm footing on the 3DS by communicating these ideas and more in a simple and streamlined manner.
Mirror of Fate is a worthwhile endeavor for any 3DS owner, and should make Castlevania fans consider picking up the handheld if they don’t have one already. The impressive cutscenes flesh out the Lords of Shadow fiction with fun twists, and should be required reading before Lords of Shadow 2 arrives.
Meristation (Mar 05, 2013)
Nintendo Life (Mar 05, 2013)
Although the 2D perspective and Metroidvania-style features call to mind past classics, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate shouldn’t be directly compared to previous games in Konami’s long-running vampire-hunting series, because it tries to do things a little differently. While elements of exploration and item collection remain, they are drastically scaled back when compared to the likes of Symphony of the Night and Dawn of Sorrow — which could be a positive or a negative, depending on your personal taste. Instead, MercurySteam’s vision of Castlevania is built around a deep combat engine which tries to make each and every enemy encounter a rewarding and challenging experience. Factor in some impressive visuals, gorgeous music and taxing boss battles — not to mention a fantastic story and more replay value than you might at first imagine — and you’ve got a game which can stand proud in the Castlevania bloodline. Sometimes, a little change is a good thing.
Nintenderos (Jan 26, 2014)
Any beefs players may have will likely rest in the gameplay, which doesn't quite click as well as other elements of the experience. Attempts to offer a bit of open exploration fall flat in front of the game's undeniable linearity. Plus, character growth is strangely stifled, reducing the opportunity for satisfying hero evolution. It's still a fun and memorable play, but these rough spots will likely keep Mirror of Fate from becoming a classic within this venerable franchise.
Reboot (Apr, 2013)
As I stated above, it’s not that Mirror of Fate is a bad game. In fact, by itself, it’s a good title. However, compared to past 2D Castlevania titles, it’s just average. 3DS owners may want to check it out to see how good games can look on the handheld, while Castlevania fans may just want to see the continuation of the last entry to the next game. However, Castlevania fans that are looking for the next great 2D entry may want to go back to a previous title instead.
Joystiq (Mar 13, 2013)
Mirror of Fate invites a fair comparison to older Castlevania games like Aria of Sorrow, which made light of a somber premise with whip-smart heroes, Michiru Yamane's upbeat score and a crisp, unfurling map of interconnected rooms. Dracula's dire abode was buoyed by brisk exploration, by coloring in each room on the diagram and expanding your navigational knowledge as you went about the business of slaying monsters. The combat found complexity in a large variety of swords, lances, axes, maces and daggers, each of which offered simple, easily decipherable changes.
GameSpot (Mar 05, 2013)
All told, Mirror of Fate is a fun and occasionally challenging action game with successful elements and an unfortunate, but small, selection of poor design choices. By taking liberties with the series' lore, it opens the door for an exciting conclusion to the Lords of Shadow timeline. Had some of the inconsistencies in gameplay been ironed out, the experience would have felt much more cohesive, but as it stands, Mirror of Fate is a good, but not great, addition to the historic Castlevania series.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Mar 05, 2013)
Stones, crenellations, laboratories! Castlevania, for all its moody horrors, has always been a comforting sort of experience, and while Mirror of Fate might willingly fumble the classic structure somewhat, it's still got a touch of that familiar vampire-hunting charm to it - a charm that comes to the rescue whenever the developer's invention or polish fall short. This 3DS outing can't match the smart assurance of the first Lords of Shadow, then, but it remains a decent action game with some lovely art to keep it chugging along. It's something of a makeweight, as handheld games far too frequently are - but there's just enough here to satisfy until the true follow-up to Lords of Shadows is ready.
Edge (Mar 05, 2013)
Three times the protagonists gives you three times the number of toys and an engaging, if thoroughly convoluted, story, but it’s not without cost. What Simon, Trevor and Alucard give to the mechanics and narrative they take from its flow: you still feel gated, even when you’ve got all the gear. It’s a deflating discovery, but few games save their disappointments for their endgames. And Mirror Of Fate, like Lords Of Shadow before it, feels like Castlevania, but carves out a likeable identity of its own.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Mar 06, 2013)
Factornews (Mar 14, 2013)
Games TM (Mar 14, 2013)
Mirror Of Fate is a game confused, one made by people who clearly know how to adapt Castlevania for a 3D environment, but have no idea how to do the same with one dimension less. It's neither a terrible game nor one worthy of any real note, a thing that exists rather than a thing people should go out of their way to experience. It seems lazy to play the 'not as good as Symphony Of The Night'card, but when you're making a 2D Castlevania game, it's one you surely have to expect players to be holding, especially when your awkward attempt at a 2D world doesn't even come close to any of the DS or GBA games in terms of quality.
IGN (Mar 05, 2013)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate isn't the Castlevania game you're looking for. Not even close.
1UP (Mar 07, 2013)
Of course, as a long-time Castlevania fan, I approached Mirror of Fate with unavoidable preconceptions and baggage. Still, I tried to be open-minded and fair -- for the first few hours, I was even happy to defend it. Yet the experience degraded the longer I played, and by the end it all amounted to little more than a huge misstep: A monotonous, ugly attempt to reinvent Castlevania that seems have been created without anyone stepping back to really ask themselves what about the series endures, or how best to combine it with more contemporary game tropes. I'm not surprised I didn't enjoy Mirror as a Castlevania sequel, but I'm disappointed that it's not much fun as a game, period.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Mar 29, 2013)
Diehard GameFan (Mar 15, 2013)
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate is a game with a long subtitle, a few good ideas that are handled poorly, a few bad ideas that are handled abysmally, and a sensibility about it that will appeal to God of War fans while alienating anyone who enjoyed the original Castlevania games in the first place.
