Unravelling and making sense of its Escher-esque landscapes inspires the kind of light-bulb-being-switched-on moments that are so uncommon in an age of games that want to hold your hand for the whole experience. But there's not enough thought paid to its – potentially interesting – story and uniformly bland aesthetic. Crush 3D is an elegant game. It's just a shame that its elegance isn't more visible.

Dommage.
Crush 3D is somehow reminiscent of the geeky kid at school who manages to talk you into going out on a date with them. It's not much to look at, admittedly, and its choice of clothes is unusual to put it kindly, but when you get to know it you're initially impressed at how clever it is and charmed by its unexpected sense of humour. It's only when you spend more time with it that its constant toll on your brain gets a little too much and you find yourself breaking up with it just so you can relax a bit and hang out with that other, rather friendlier kid who likes chucking bricks down a well. It's a real shame, as there is the kernel of a good idea here, but the overall execution just fails to convince.

For a puzzle game, Crush 3D is a good choice for 3DS fans. While the mechanic may not be as creative as it was a few years ago, it’s still a decent game to check out. If you never saw the PSP version or haven’t played games like Fez or Echochrome, I’d recommend checking this out to see what crushing is all about.
