Given the game’s relative age, Fantasy Life isn’t going to be the shiniest toy on the 3DS’ shelf this year, but it just may be the happiest. Providing quality gameplay in both its life sim and action RPG aspects, served up with all of the colourful wit and charm anyone could ask for, it serves as a jewel in the crown of memory of a games studio that helped create some of the most memorable role-playing video games that ever graced the medium. It may now be 1-UP Studios, but Brownie Brown hit its marks with Level 5 in this game. As a farewell for the company in its old guise this is an excellent game for the occasion. So long Brownie Brown, and thanks for all the fun.

Between the large number of quests, combat and various activities Fantasy Life has something for everyone. While this can prove overwhelming at the start players that push through will be rewarded with an addicting game with near endless replay opportunities.

A ton of well-designed, fun mechanics work well and are truly engaging for the player. Good-looking visuals and a wonderful whimsical charm top that off - and yet Fantasy Life ultimately feels almost muddled in a sense. It's a selection of excellent and rather compelling mechanics that never quite pull together into one cohesive whole.

With three types of quests - Challenges for your current Life, your talking butterfly companion Flutter's Requests, and Other Requests from NPCs - on top of the story, and three types of rewards - Stars (experience), Bliss, and Dosh respectively - for completing them, Fantasy Life is a game of many similar achievable goals. You won't play it for either the story or challenge, but simply to pass the time, perhaps collecting Bliss to get a pet or Dosh to buy new furniture for your house. This is RPG lite, Animal Crossing plus questing, and for some people that's absolutely fine.

Fantasy Life is just too big for its own good. It offers a wide variety of activities to take on, but they’re all heartbreakingly shallow — after tackling your first bounty or crafting your first end table, you know exactly what to expect from all future bounties and end tables. In lieu of depth, the game almost always substitutes repetition. It may have ample charm and smart progression systems, but life in Fantasy Life is more mundane than fantastic.
Diehard GameFan (Dec 30, 2014)
As a package, Fantasy Life is charming, fun, and addictive, just what I expected it to be.
